The premises is quite typical of a small independent garage, but the professionalism and attitude from the guys working there puts my main Honda dealer to shame. They even remembered me and my car when I contacted them for the 2nd time after a 15 month gap! Servicing and repair costs were VERY reasonable, and they did some minor extra work that I requested without any fuss at all. When I went to pick up my keys and pay, I was provided with a relatively small bill, a thorough rundown of what was done, and recommendations of what I needed to look our for and take care of next. I don't live locally, and it's a bit of a pain getting my car to them, but seriously, I wouldn't take my car anywhere else.

Yesterday we had an issue with the ZF Transmission box and booked in the vehicle for a gearbox service- only to be met by Richard Barker who explained that he was 99.9% sure it wasn't the gearbox but the new tyres that had been recently fitted, which were not Star rated and were interfering with the XDrive transmission. This was sterling advice and saved us a lot of money as we went back to the tyre dealer and upgraded the tyres back to Pirelli Zeros! This isn't the first time Richard has done this for us and we cannot thank him enough for his time and his wisdom. Thank you Richard and all at Barkers motorworks. This little muse is called Cambridge Grove and is packed with little backstreet garages. These types of place are often given a bad rep by the media and larger dealers and service centres. In a number of cases this is totally unwarranted. Kingpin Auto services is a prime example if this. The Guys who work here are professional, polite and surprisingly cheap. As you enter the garage it's a little unclear where you should be heading or indeed if you should be in there at all. But once you've cautiously made your way past the ramps and filthy oil drums you reach an office at the back and will probably be met by Steve or John. The two of them have been uncommonly cheery every time I've been to see them and they can normally get any work you need doing done the same week. Be careful where you park though as with so many garages on such a small street the traffic can be a nightmare and the politics around parking a total minefield.

Dishonest unlawful fraudsters! They recovered my son's car…read moreon behalf of the police, after we called the police to tell them we would recover the vehicle ourselves. They took 10 days to make contact, which was done with a falsified anonymous letter claiming to be from the police, and falsely insisting this is a police matter ( it isn't, it's a civil matter). On visiting the car it was evident they had illegally unlocked and entered the vehicle, plus removed personal items (still not returned) plus caused severe damage in the unlawful recovery. We said we wanted to disclaim the vehicle, as per Hampshire Police website guidelines, they claimed this was not an option, on more than 12 occasions, both verbally (recorded) and in writing, and to the Winchester police front desk in my presence. They insisted we raise an official complaint with them but took half an hour arguing about giving me a name to address it to (Guy Morgan incidentally). Guy Morgan was aggressive and threatening in his response and has not come back to us to resolve the situation. They have lied repeatedly and provided false and contradictory information every time we speak to them. We escalated this with the police complaints who, conferred with the police solicitor and confirmed that Midhurst had acted unlawfully, and should have offered us the option of disclaiming the vehicle for £96 on day one, as well as contacting us to explain this (which they did not do) We have now paid the £96, however Midhurst Engineering are still continuing to harass my son and are still acting unlawfully. So remember, if these charlatans recover (or have recovered) your car on behalf of the police, you have the option of disclaiming the vehicle for £96. I wonder how many other people have fallen victim to their unlawful actions and been robbed? People like this don't deserve to be in business.

He prides himself in providing an honest service by outsourcing the MOT to Kwikfit and therefore not being the one who decides what work you need doing on your car. This is not a bad thing in itself but unfortunately he does not have the ethical behaviour to back this up. He is not upfront about the fact that he does not carry out MOTs, so it was news to me when me car was not at the garage. He said I 'just didn't ask the right questions' and he didn't say he did MOTs he believes he said 'I will sort it for you'. Had I known he would not carry out the MOT himself I would of gone elsewhere for 2 reasons, 1 it would have saved me £30 as he charges £65.82 (inc VAT - not normally charged for MOTs) Kwikfit MOT £35 and 2.) It would have been quicker. He had my car for 2 full working days and over the weekend even though it only had 2 and a half hours work to be done on it. And even then it seemed too much trouble to get it back from Kwikft at my convenience and instead I had to wait for a time when his wife could collect it! However, the main reason I would not return is because he was aggressive, unpleasant and had no concern for customer service, claiming things were 'out of his hands' even though when I rang Kwikfit directly they were more than happy to help. He barked at me in his office for over ten minutes when I queried the MOT bill, claiming he 'had to make a living and put food on the table' 'did I want him to work for free' (at £62 per hour for the work he did it was hardly free) and then concluded 'well next time I will put £30 extra on the labour - you'd never know'. A highly unpleasant experience. I would never talk to anyone in this manner, let alone a woman who was 7months pregnant. A classy outfit. Please avoid.

At first glance at Sussex Four Wheel Drive you could definitely be forgiven for thinking this was…read moresome kind of working museum. The fore court is adorned with signs from decades long past and with two old sheep dogs running free in the yard it would be all too easy to imagine that you were on the set of a film. But no this is a real working garage. Where you can come and get your classic car, four by four or even regular car repaired, MOT'd or diagnosed. It's owned and run by a chap Called Phil Woodhams and a lovely lady who I took to be his wife. As you talk to him it becomes quite quickly apparent that the signs are no gimmick, this guy is old school in his understanding of vehicles and his attitude to service. No bad language, no jargon or sucking through the teeth at enquiries, just a really pleasant and personal approach. He also harbours a great interest and knowledge of classic bikes. This is what brought me his away (apart from my love of all things old and automotive) this morning. My old bike had started making a strange grinding noise from what I thought was the gear box and without hesitation he came over and took a good look at it for me. There was no charge and his diagnostic proved to be spot on. So if you have an old land Rover or just live a little out of town and you have a problem I really would recommend popping down or just giving him a call.
