Ultimately, at some point in February 2022, I decided to hire David to do my 2021 United States Individual Income Tax Return, my 2021 California Resident Income Tax Return, and my 2021 Corporate Tax Return (for both the federal government, and the State of California). As a result of this decision, I informed David via electronic mail (email) about my decision. I made this decision because of my ability to monetarily afford David's tax preparation services, tax advice services, tax consulting services, etc. From my perspective, the way that David "verified" me to ensure that I was actually the individual requesting David's tax preparation services was really weird (which was something that perplexed me, something that was really strange to me, something that rubbed me the wrong way, etc.). I explained to David that just because I have personal (home) contact information that is different than my business contact information does not somehow make me suspicious. David and I (we) were able to get over this "hiccup" quickly so that we could advance into entering a professional business relationship. David is a Certified Public Accountant that is very detailed, very thorough, very experienced, etc. David is an excellent Certified Public Accountant. David is very knowledgeable. He is "top of the line" in his profession (in my opinion as being his first-time client). David and I predominantly communicated via electronic mail (email), which was great for me because my primary method of communication is electronic mail (email), and my preferred method of communication is electronic mail (email). However, when David and I (we) needed to talk on the telephone, David and I (we) found a way to talk on the telephone when necessary, even when I did not believe that it was necessary, even when I did not have time because I am always swamped/slammed/busy daily (everyday), even when I did not like it (which I did not on one (1) occasion). David and I were able to successfully work together, collaborate together, etc. so that ultimately my 2021 United States Individual Income Tax Return, my 2021 California Resident Income Tax Return, my 2021 United States Income Tax Return For S Corporation, and my California S Corporation Franchise or Income Tax Return, we are drafted on time, prepared on time, finalized on time, submitted on time for filing, etc. I have so much more knowledge and information now because of David than I ever did before with any other tax preparer (Certified Public Accountant or not) that I have ever hired regarding my tax return(s) preparation. After the ownership change, it's clear that level of care is gone. What replaced it is a rigid, impersonal system that treats clients like transactions rather than relationships. They failed to notify clients of a major policy change regarding tax extensions until just days before the deadline--putting me at risk of non-compliance. When I raised concerns, their response was essentially: "This is our policy now, and if you don't like it, go somewhere else." No accountability. No attempt to fix the situation. No access to leadership. Just scripted responses from a support team. For a firm that benefited from years of loyalty and referrals, this is an incredibly poor way to treat clients. Avoid. UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO OWNER : Your response proves my point. After years of automatically handling my extensions, you changed the process right before a deadline, offered no real support, and told me to pay $240 or figure it out myself. Had I not followed up, I could have been penalized -- and now you're trying to turn it around and frame it as my fault by calling me "not engaged." After years of loyalty and referrals, this wasn't a transition -- it was a downgrade to a transactional model.
