We ordered our drinks on the walk there and we hoped they would be ready when we arrived. When we walked in the time changed to add about 15 min on which was a bit annoying however we were not in a rush so we calmly waited. I got the hot matcha latte and it was really good. I like only a drop of sweetener bc I like to taste the matcha. I like it served temperature hot (not warm)- and this drink arrived exactly the way I like it. Would def come back for another one. My bf got some kind of coffee w cardamom in it (sorry I forget which kind - I'm not a coffee drinker and they all sound the same to me ha). He really enjoyed his drink. He had a BOGO coupon so we each actually got 2 drinks. I planned to take my second one home but the drink was so good I drank both of them ha. Will def be back again.

Avril 50 was a regular stop in my patrol days and I loved walking into the shop. Always the wonderful aroma of brewing coffees and chocolate dancing with other exotic smells and the smells of fine papers and magazines. It always felt to me like stepping from West Philadelphia into a magical pocket of Europe. As it looked exactly the same, I wondered if anything had changed in the past 22 years and as soon as I crossed the threshold, I found that it was the same - like stepping back 22 years, yet somehow I was that much older. The proprietor was still there, still the same and looking no different - something that confirmed my belief that this was a magical and wonderful pocket paradise tucked away on a small West Philadelphia street. A brief catch-up chat, a shopping bag of fine teas and a perfectly brewed double-espresso to takeaway later; I stepped back into the bright Fall sun of West Philadelphia. I found myself smiling as I sipped the espresso, happy that one of the best things for me in that neighborhood has remained unchanged for others to enjoy and to continue to discover. It will not be another 22 years before I make my way back - that is for certain.

I'm still not entirely sure what the shop is supposed to be but it was an experience going there for sure. The coffee is self serve and there are several different selections, each with a short description up on the wall. My boyfriend and I each got a medium (I believe it was $2.25 per) and loved our coffee. Both were tasty and exceptionally strong. I'm not sure if they do anything fancier (lattés, etc) but I doubt it. Nonetheless, if I were a student at penn and needed a coffee this is where I would go.

For a place that tries to split both restaurant, cafe, and even board game restaurant, they do all of it fairly well. Cafe downstairs serves pretty good coffee, and usually has a seat available. There are definitely moments, such as weekend afternoons, when you should be prepared to packed in while working, but otherwise, this is usually a pleasant working environment. On the whole, they've got frequent visitor rewards and stamp card benefits, so if you make a habit out of visiting, you may eventually be rewarded for it with some kind of free drink or otherwise. Wi-fi is solid, and there are plenty of outlets to go around if you get a seat along the windows. Nice thing about this place too is that they're open pretty late for U-City, although they've got competition with all the Yemeni coffee shops popping up.

Ambience was nice, and not too much noise or background disturbances. There's generally a lot of seating here, with ample outlets. I've visited previous times where there hasn't been a lot of free space because this is a student hotspot for nearby Drexel and UPenn. But that's honestly no fault to the cafe itself-- they are pretty much maxing out space without beginning to feel too cluttered and sacrificing the "vibe". Ordered a drip and a English muffin breakfast sandwich. One of my friends also completed the "Google review for a cookie" deal, and we enjoyed a piping hot freshly baked cookie! Overall I'd definitely consider this a place to meet up, or lock in while studying. Just make sure to consider the time of day and time of year academically, as this is a popular student spot.

Service here was a bit slow, but the bagel came out not unreasonably. I'm no bagel fiend by any measure, so the bagel here is solid and enjoyable. There's a small outdoor courtyard that we sat in that was nice given the nice weather this morning. Plenty of indoor seating too allows for large groups to dine in. For example, I've seen tons of squash groups when there's a tournament in town gather here, and those teams are not trivially sized. Solid pick for breakfast in the morning.
