Nasty packet floating in my coffee
    Jessica R.

Horrible service. Only ordered 2 things, wake up wrap and a coffee. They couldn't get that right. Almost forgot to give me my coffee and then there was a sweet and low packet floating in the bottom of it. Disgusting! The employees were too busy talking and laughing to each other to get the simple order right.

    It's worth the trip !

I cleverly avoid the weekend morning rush by intentionally arriving around 11AM on Saturdays or Sundays. By this late hour, I am barely functional and in need of DD coffee ( light and sweet please). This location appears quite new and has plenty of tables and chairs where one can relax, enjoy the coffee, donuts, bagels and the wonderful aroma of brewing coffee and baked goods. There is usually a free local newspaper available however, I just pop open the lap top and enjoy their free WiFi. The environment is comfy enough so that I can linger for a while and maybe even have a second cup of Joe and plan the rest of my weekend. The owners and employees are all very nice, get my orders correctly, and are responsive. As I am banished to these suburbs, I choose to go to a reliable, clean, friendly DD instead of waiting in line at a popular pancake house or overpay for mediocre food. The choices are slim but thank goodness for DD.

    Parchment paper breakfast sandwich... yum!

It's located in a tiny row of storefronts with a single strip of shared parking spaces. Inside, it felt warm and inviting with a few seats by the window. The displays with donuts were mostly empty except with a select few still left over. It's cool that they offer both yeast and cake donuts to choose from. I ended up getting a half dozen with red velvet frosted, cherry glazed, regular glazed, lemon filled jelly donut, and two more that I can't recall. And I got this interesting chocolate milk that had a good amount of protein in it too. Donuts and milk! The donuts tasted pretty good. A good combination of airiness and fluffy and seemed to be fully cooked through. That lemon filled jelly donut was pretty hefty too; definitely one of the heaviest donuts I've ever had...lol As I was checking out, the lady behind the counter informed me this particular store has been going strong for more than 40 years, which is damn impressive!! I'll definitely be coming back here for more delicious donuts!

For example, the Kungfu Tea in Libertyville, their tapioca pearls are so inconsistent. Sometimes I go and they're mushy and other times, they're so hard like rubber bullets; they're never made correctly and perfectly every time. That's where Te Amo comes in the picture. Their tapioca pearls are consistently good. They also have really good flavor combinations and the drinks are made with care. Along with the boba tea, they also sell mochi donuts and basque cheesecake!

It was still a bit too sweet, I would've picked 10% if it had that option. The foam is a bit sour and bitter, kinda shocking. But not until you get to the actual drink part, it's actually not bad. The light bitterness throughout was really good. Both ube and dalgona flavors come out. But I might try to go with more simple/purer flavors, one at a time. I find mixed flavors a bit too much, since not all mixed flavors go well together. Might just go with dalgona by itself next time or ube creme brulee alone. Also, I think the drink I had would've been better cold, as the ice would cut the sweetness to half if I waited long enough. I would've ordered a cold one but cold would've exacerbated my cough, so hot it is. Also wanted to add that the boba were done well, not under or overcooked. The tapioca itself had a nice toasted sugar flavor. As for service, it's mostly a self-service kiosk. Ordering is pretty easy and straightforward, and they have Apple Pay. Interestingly the ordering system is through Chowbus, they text you your order number.

And the brown butter latte was a nice warm treat on a cold Chicago morning. The employees behind the counter were nice and friendly and helped me decide my drink for the morning. That's why we didn't hesitate to order a special two-tier TikTok-themed cake for my niece's birthday on Saturday. Unfortunately, this time was very different. After picking up the cake and heading to the party, we discovered that the cake had completely caved in. The top tier slid off the bottom tier before we even opened the box. I took pictures immediately and contacted the bakery right away. I didn't ask for a refund--I simply asked if there was anything they could do to make it right. Instead, I was told that because the cake had left the store, there was nothing they could do. I even offered to return the damaged cake. Still, the manager on duty, Mario, said he couldn't help and would pass it on to his supervisor. We left the cake with them and walked out empty-handed--no replacement, no apology, no effort to resolve the issue. We ended up going to Sam's club buying two cakes($50 total with tax), and creatively combining them to save the party. Honestly, those cakes turned out better than what we originally purchased for $150.00 from La Luz This experience was really disappointing, especially considering the loyalty and money we've given LaLuz over the years. I'm leaving this review to let others know that if something goes wrong, you may not receive the customer service you'd expect--or deserve. Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere.
