I went in to get my taxes completed and laid out everything I needed filed. I was told that it wouldn't be a problem, and would take roughly two weeks to complete. Eight months later, moments before the tax deadline, my taxes were finally completed (after dozens of emails) and I was charged three times more than my quoted amount. This huge price discrepancy not only happened to myself, but another colleague as well. I brought it up and I was told that it took more work than expected, despite me laying everything out, and that I pulled my quote out of thin air. I recently had a terrible experience with Rick. I received a notice from IRS with regards to my withholdings. I contacted Rick to help me understand what I needed to correct. He told me he called IRS and they told him the letter was sent by mistake and I should ignore it. My employer did not let me correct my withholding and they needed a letter from IRS. I contacted Rick again and he told me there is nothing IRS can provide. I decided to call IRS because I was paying so much taxes every month. I spent about 45 min with the agent and it turned out the initial letter wasn't sent by "mistake" and they in fact needed more information to correct my withholding. They sent my employer a letter and everything is fine now. I paid money and they are refusing to refund it even though I was lied to. I wish I could give zero rating!! read more

As a further caveat to others considering this firm, following up on yelp to note that because of Dunham's accounting errors on not one, but two years of our state and federal returns, we are now responsible for a significant amount of penalties and interest on top of taxes due that should have been included by Dunham on our original returns but weren't. Independent review by two separate accountancy firms have subsequently confirmed that the errors were with Dunham, not with the information we provided to him. Because Dunham has refused to cooperate, acknowledge his mistakes and/or help rectify them, we are on the hook for penalties and interest for two years with the state and the feds. Doing our best to negotiate with both agencies to reduce or eliminate them because of "preparer error". Remains to be seen what transpires. Thus, this cautionary tale. All that glitters.... don't assume... buyer beware! read more

I'm really sad about my experience here. About 4 years ago I decided to get a CPA, and interviewed a few folks. Jon Mills here answered my questions fairly well, and better than the other folks I talked to. They came well recommended on yelp. Also they have a very professional looking setup, right down to snarky receptionist... So even though they were a tad more expensive than my friends' CPAs, I thought I had a good setup... till recently. For the last 4 years, Jon would do my taxes. I would give a cursory glance at them, and approve. My fault here is that I didn't go over my taxes with a fine tooth comb. But then, I figured the reason I'm paying my CPA hundreds of dollars is that he does it right! April 2015, I get Jon to file my 2014 Taxes Jon emails me the returns. I notice 2 errors right away: - One accounting error which would result in my taxes reducing by a few hundred $$, - My address being reported wrong I email and ask him to correct those two errors. He replies stating that the 2 errors have been fixed and new returns filed, and emails me the updated returns. November 2015. I get a notice from the IRS collections asking if I have moved. I call up the IRS Jon NOT filed the updated returns. He filed the original ones even though he told me otherwise. I had paid my taxes as per the updated returns (the lesser amount) The IRS had sent me lots of requests asking me to pay the balance. Well guess where they went? To the wrong address in the return filed! My taxes went to collections, with fees tagged on. I shot an email to him. No response. I shot an email to his supervisor (Rick Dunham). Now I got some movement. They didn't apologize, or even own up to their mistake. However, they offered to send amended returns for free, and call up the IRS on my behalf to get my taxes reduced. I reviewed the returns (this time really well!) and sent them. That issue got resolved. Fast forward to April 2016. I decided to do my taxes myself this year. Rather than paying a CPA hundreds of dollars for costly mistakes, I might as well make them myself! :). Here's the final piece. In doing my 2015 taxes, I had to go through my 2014 taxes really well. Guess what? Jon has omitted a lot of deductions on my rental properties, which could have saved me taxes.... This isn't negligence now, it's just being really bad at math.... like my neighbor's 5th grade kid who I help out in math can do better than Dunham CPAs.... read more

Mike Park did my taxes. He was nice and helpful and found some deductions I didn't know that I qualified for. The total price was $350, and I don't think my taxes were exceptionally complicated: single, with (very) small business, some stock trades, and no house (read: not itemized). That seems pricey to me, about three times what my CPA in Omaha cost. Apparently that cost includes impromptu advice througout the year, so maybe it will be worth it. There were a few things that were less than desirable: - When helping me decide whether to turn my borderline hobby into a business, Mike didn't inform me that I would have to pay business taxes to the city of San Jose to do so (found out in passing from a conversation with a friend). - I wasn't contacted when my taxes were ready. After waiting three weeks, I finally contacted them and found out they were in fact ready. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Frankly, if I could give -10 stars, I would. We moved to the States in 2012. We needed an accountant with international taxation specialization as well as the ability to 'hold our hands' while learning the complicated tax system to avoid any financial disasters. Sadly, our accountant at Dunham & Associates failed miserably. In the three years that we were his clients (we moved firms this week) he has made numerous mistakes, missed some errors in employer paperwork two years in a row including that they'd been withholding state tax without our permission or knowledge consequently costing us 50% of a house downpayment in penalties, interest and taxes due. He also reported non-existent, 'guesstimated' income from our home country as a shortcut which added to said pressure on us. At no point did our accountant apologize to us. At no point did he even seem conscious of his errors or the impact they were having on us. At no point did he take responsibility for his actions and failings. As one final nail in the coffin, our accountant decided to email us today, 8th of October, to ask us if we wanted him to file our return. After filing extensions without bothering to notify us (and missing important details whilst doing so) it is hilarious that he waits until the eleventh hour to bother asking what we need from him. Thankfully, our wonderful new accountant had already filed 2014 for us AND pinpointed costly mistakes in 2013 that he's now refiling so that we can make up ground. It appears that we are not the only ones who have ended up 'on the hook' as a result of Dunham and Associates' sheer incompetence. I could go into much more detail about this appalling saga, but I will spare you. Needless to say, we would suggest you go *anywhere* other than Dunham & Associates. Seriously. 0 stars. I was very satisfied with my consultation with Rick Dunham. If I had more than one visit to judge by, I would probably give five stars. I am being conservative just because we are talking about our financial lives here. I had questions about taxes, home buying, investments, and a variety of worries all of which were addressed before I left. Rick made sure that he was not skipping anything, but also made sure to stay on track and not fluff out the visit, which you would later have to pay for. I mentioned to Rick that I would be getting a second opinion form anotehr accountant. He took no offense and said he encourages it - that made me happy. If you have a complicated tax return you want to avoid the big national companies like HR Block or do-it-yourself tax software because they always take the safe road with write-offs. Private CPAs will be more aggressive. Dunham Associates have been doing my returns for several years now and they do a great job. I had an initial consultation with Rick Dunham where he went over what I needed. He asked some questions and was very thorough and professional and answered any questions that I had. My returns have been prepared by Mike Park and I've never had any issues with any of them. I've both called and emailed Mike with questions and he's always responded back in a timely manner. All of my returns have been completed quickly, granted they aren't too complex. Front office staff is friendly and courteous, and fee breakdown on your return is clear. If there was a way not to give any star, I would do so for Dunham. I typically do my own taxes. As, my case went little beyond standard income and deduction in 2010, I approached Dunham. I explicitly asked them (1) whether they are familiar with tax implications in my situation and (2) whether they have good experiences in preparing tax for folks with similar situation as mine. To both of my queries, they replied "yes". I provided them with whatever papers they asked me for. When I received the prepared tax papers (of course after paying dear), I found that there were many cut corners. It included things those I was not supposed to claim and omitted things those I was supposed to claim. Besides, it did not include couple of forms, it should be. I contacted them couple of times -- but all went in vain -- they expressed no intention to rectify their mistakes. I am really confused -- how could they make so much mistake while they had good experiences? I guess, if your case is simple -- simple form of incomes, basic deductions you will have a good experience (at a very high price point). If your case is not straightforward, I would recommend you to stay away from Dunham. read more

I am trying to find a CPA (firm) who may be interested in preparing tax returns as well as providing some knowledge and experience with tax strategies, financial planning, gift & estate tax issues, business planning and possibly some bookkeeping services. After viewing the Dunham Associates' website and finding that they offer all of these services, I felt I had to call and meet with these people right away. Much to my surprise, when I called I was told that I had to pay $200 to meet with someone, even if only to get more information about how they can help me in general (not specifically). This meeting's purpose would be to interview and meet someone at this firm to see if we could work together and if they could help me and my family. This initial meeting was not to get specific information on how to prepare any specific tax return or to get specific planning advice. I know it's tax season now, as the gentleman on the phone stated, and maybe now is not the perfect time to interview CPAs. However, I was basically told that in order to meet anyone I had to pay up front, without receiving a service? I asked if I waited until this tax season was over, would I still have to pay $200 just to meet someone? He said, yes. I've never paid anyone or any company to tell me about their own company or services that they provide. He was rushing me off the phone when trying to clarify the purpose of this initial meeting and that I wasn't soliciting FREE advice, he didn't care. He basically said $200 to step through the door. I know, maybe he misunderstood what I was looking for? I explained it to him. Maybe he didn't mean it? I think he did. Wow, what a disappointment. I have used a CPA for the past several years and don't mind paying the higher fees, paying the money isn't an issue. I will pay for the knowledge and experience. The only reason I'm looking to meet with a new CPA is due to my relative's tax returns being a little more complicated and I'm not sure if my current CPA wants to take on the new client. I contacted this company after reading some reviews at Yelp. I got my single-person S corp return prepared by them. They assigned me one CPA to work with. The individual lacked follow up and did not return my calls until I called the front desk and left 2/3 msgs. They also messed up with the INvoice and sent me reminders to pay even though I had paid in full when I picked up my return. I was expecting a better customer services.
