All the reviews on this page tell a consistent story, evident to the same experience my family received: LMGW was a great firm to work with, but as it merged with Wheeler Accountants the firm de-prioritized smaller clients and changed its entire business model to only extract the most amount of money from its clients. After 20+ years of using them for accounting services, they cut ties with us with a poorly written email full of assumptions. Their thesis was that since they were prioritizing higher billing clients, we would not want to pay their increased rates and therefore needed to find new CPAs. There was never a consideration of offering us the increased rates: a clear sign that they are no longer interested in working with small businesses. read more

I came to Yelp to write a 1-star review, and found that really, it's hardly necessary. Everyone in the 1-star camp is on point: - Poor (or no) communication - Clear lack of interest in the "small" clients - Unresponsive - even to inquiries that they initiated (they called me to see if I still wanted to be a client this year ... to which I said yes ... then they ghosted me anyway - ignoring both phone and e-mail attempts to confirm) One thing that's been left out - through all the mergers and acquisitions, they've had an obviously high-rate of staff churn. In 2 years, I had 3 different people on my account (well, OK, only 2 got assigned - after the second left the firm, instead of being handed off to the 3rd ... they simply ignored me altogether - resulting in me having to figure out my own quarterly estimates last year). Luckily, I was able to find another firm to cover me for 2023 returns - but that wasn't easy! If you're an individual, family, or small business - keep looking. After many years of loyalty to this tax & accounting firm we recently received a letter telling us they no longer wanted to provide us with service. Apparently we are too old, not rich enough or who knows what. And thank you Wheeler tax service for telling us right before tax season so that we are now scrambling to find another firm taking on new clients. I just found out that my husband and I were dropped by Wheeler CPA this year. Prior to that I worked with Kevin Madej for almost 40 years starting from when he was part of LMGW. I always received great service from him. After he left Wheeler, we were referred to another member of the firm, who did our taxes for a few more years. We were wondering why we hadn't received anything from the firm regarding access to their portal to start uploading our tax materials. Apparently, there was an email sent in December explaining that we were being dropped as clients and needed to refer our "personal tax matters to another professional effectively immediately." Neither my husband or I saw the email, which may have gone to spam. Having been a client for years I was very surprised to find out that they would no longer be helping us. In an email sent yesterday from the firm was an attached copy of the December email, which was very generic and what most would consider to be very unprofessional. First in today's world how can any company assume an email was delivered properly and read. One would think if a company was terminating a long term relationship they would send a certified letter. And/or ask for a confirmation of receiving what ever method they used. They cited new tax laws and Covid as reasons that they would have to drop clients. No difference given to those faithful, loyal customers from the 1980s? Perhaps because we are now retired with a lower income we're not a lucrative customer for them. It was a form letter clearly written to get rid of lower income clients who could not pay the new even higher fees with no deference given to personal relationship to clients. During the years we worked with Kevin Madej we were given personal and professional service. He is no longer with the firm and things have changed since he left. A more professional way to handle this situation would be to ask clients about a new fee structure and/or perhaps refer them to a new accountant who could provide tax services to them? I am so disappointed in this firm I cannot even articulate it. How unprofessional. I would never recommend this firm to anyone/any business no matter how much money you make. There must be other firms out there who treat clients with professionalism and class. It is not Wheeler CPA. read more

LMGW was great in the past, but after several mergers Wheeler is now focused only on very large clients. I definitely do not recommend for small business or complex Trusts. The accountants are overworked and unable to respond to anything in a timely manner. read more

I don't know if Steve knows what they are doing to his clients but this is so unprofessional and almost hurtful to be treated this way after being his client for so many years. read more

Only asked him to go back two years to sort it out he went back five years tried to tell me that I didn't use my car 100% for work purposes so he deducted 25% which is not his call he first quoted me 300 pound I got the bill through for 600 so they lied or they didnt want to tell me the real price so im afraid I will not be returning read more

My review is consistent with what other's have written. I have been with this firm for 25 years. On 1.31.2023 I received an email that they were doubling my rates. A couple months prior my Mom received a poorly written letter that she was being dropped. I was appalled at the callous nature this firm treats it's long term consistent clients. We have an S corp. While or returns are done well as far as I know and some good service in most areas... The only response I would get is if they needed more docs, or payments. When we asked about fees or to pay etc we got almost immediate responses. When I asked questions via email to Dittmer I got NO responses such as how to write of some investments personally or with the S corp, and about splitting or corp next year, and for a doc or two I needed for my lawyer to do that. When I received no reply after emails and calls I have to admit I wrote an email with a "slightly" frustrated tone that I would like a response either way. I stated I would be happy to pay for that time and it was time sensitive. I almost immediately received what I think was a fake email (due to its timing) that they were downsizing clients, taking only certain types of clients etc and cancelled us just before tax season prep. I think this is total BS and was done because I called her out for never responding to me personally. In fact I would get almost weekly emails stating how they can help with anything and give advice - ya right. I pointed that out to her and she cancelled us within a day! Does she think we are idiots to believe that letter of hers? If you cannot take a little frustration from a client and get a little tougher skin when you don't reply then good riddance. Lastly I don't like people hiding behind some excuse rather than stating fact like "I didnt like your email so we are cancelling you". That I could respect and this I do not. Lastly I find it telling that reviews dropped to almost all negative when they merged with our accountant's company Dittmer to their business, and that the boss man stopped replying to negative reviews in 2012... read more

Do not recommend. They are not responsible to emails, often requires multiple pings to get a response. The accountant we worked with didn't know the property tax deduction details for singles as joint tenants and I had to point this out to her - we would have paid thousands more each person per year if I didn't told her the facts. We asked her to do some calculations of how much marriage penalty we'd have, she basically hand waved, didn't even glance at her compute and said some crazy number like hundreds of thousands more, which was not true for our incomes. One year we received a ~500 dollar late payment fine from IRS because they didn't sent in the payment in time?! They are not cheap either. Would avoid if you have any other choice. TurboTax probably does a better job than them. All their reviews from recent years seems bad, perhaps this firm has gone downhill from turnovers. read more

This is our second year now working with Jaclyn Skull and she's done wonderful work for us twice. So glad that we've found our CPA! I've found that anything beyond single-source income makes taxes get really complicated, really fast. Trying to save a buck, I tried my hand at Turbo Tax for a few years to manage a home business alongside investments, but I ended up with a lot of questions and a lot of dead ends... which cost me a lot of money to the government, money that I now suspect I may not have really owed. But I digress. Hiring Jaclyn went against every penny-pinching bone in my body, but I manned up and decided to see what a real CPA could do with my mess. Boy am I glad I did! Two years in a row now she's made it really simple and has more than paid for herself. She knows the tax code inside and out, so I just feed her my information and she puts it in every place it belongs. We had an initial consultation where I explained our entire situation, then I gave her the docs and everything went quiet. Come a few days before the deadline, in came a form, my wife and I signed, and the refunds appeared like magic in our bank account a few days later. "Refund??" my wife exclaimed, in disbelief. "I know!" I replied, scooping my jaw from the floor. Jaclyn makes it taxes on your own terms. I can't recommend her highly enough. Pro tip: the tax software seems really intimidating, but just do your best and don't stress about it too much. They'll catch whatever you miss, as long as they more or less know what to look for. Think of it as a digital filing cabinet, just with some pre-defined structure. read more

I do not recommend. The accountant, partner, that we worked with was completely unprofessional and unresponsive. In our initial meeting we were given an approximate fee schedule, which we agreed to.However shortly after the invoices started coming in faster than we could have imagined. Once we inquired about charges and fees our emails went unanswered. After the last inquiry, I was sent a second engagement letter underlining the section that said (and I paraphrase) "trust our professional judgement." Well that professional judgement has finally led us to a second opinion. Now we are facing over 8 hours of fixing their mess! Once told of a few of their mistakes I was shocked at how basic some of them were. In addition to the rip off, we were told we were going to have monthly reports, which never happened. read more

Completely useless and unprofessional. I called and scheduled an appointment for tax filing. The person responsible took down all my information, name, phone, address and we scheduled a time. The person also said someone would call me the next day to talk before I came on taxes. No calls came and it was a bit of concern. Nevertheless, I showed up for my appointment promptly on time with my documents. Surprise!! There is no scheduled appointment. Let alone the appointment, no records of my name or any of my details. I didn't exist according to them. Do yourselves a favor - stay away from these folks and get some responsible person filing your taxes. read more

We have had excellent service from LANGE and Matt Wheeler for over ten years. Matt is knowledgeable, thorough, and helpful when we have made errors. I like their online system. You enter your tax info (which takes some time to collect and enter), and as a result your time with the CPA is much more focused and efficient. Matt is pleasant and responsive. I have worked with LMGW for over a decade, across three different successful companies that I have either started, or been a part of starting. They have done both my company and personal tax work. They were recommended to us by a valley insider, and we're glad we went with them. At one point, I went with a different firm, just for proximity to SF. Big, huge mistake. I had become used to LMGW's flawless expertise (have worked with both David Wheeler and Kevin Madej). The SF accountant not only charged us an outrageous fee, he made a mistake in our return that had us paying 40% more tax than we should have. Kevin Madej caught the other accountant's egregious mistake on our corp tax, in about 30 seconds, while doing my personal return. We switched to a second, non LMGW firm, and once again, they just didn't reach the standard of LMGW. LMGW did a great job for us both at the startup phase, and then when we were up, running, and profitable. There is a review here where the reviewer had a botched appointment. To write a damning review over a scheduling snafu, completely unrelated to the expertise of the firm, is not useful, helpful, or frankly professional. The reviewer didn't get the call he was promised, but instead of simply picking up the phone and checking before he came in, he just came in anyway. Methinks his low review has as much to do with not wanting to admit his own mistake for having not performed a basic check before wasting everyone's time. Anyway, I've learned my lesson and will stick with what works. LMGW is consistently excellent. read more

Matt represents the worst in tax accounting - I got my taxes done 2 years ago and paid about $500 dollars for fairly vanilla tax returns.( 2 w-2s with hone, mortgage and donations with minor foreign bank account). Tax savings delivered were not different from the turbo tax I did myself but I was ok with it. This year I reached out to him in January for similar returns ( I was nervous about donald trump tax impact) and then again with documents in February at which time he advised me to file an extension because he didn't have he time to do my taxes. He confirmed a price which was roughly 500-750 ( not very much different from what I paid previously). I filed my extension by myself and then in May reached out to him with the documents - his assistant then comes back with a &1000 quote for the taxes. This I found troublesome - on the one hand I had tried to accommodate his schedule by filing extensions ( based on his on the phone quote) and on the other hand now that I was locked in he decides to squeeze me out of more money. This is where I draw the line - I am happy paying more for taxes but I do not support unscrupulous behavior. I would give him negative stars if I could. read more

I agree with the reviewer who said unless you get a senior partner to work on your account, you'll get pretty poor service here. The junior person who worked on our account never returned phone calls. In addition, mistakes were made in preparing the taxes. A letter written to the founder of the firm, pointing out the problems never received any acknowledgment whatsoever. read more

This review is for tax filings in 2011 so not the most recent. We had a very good experience with LMGW. We hired the to file our taxes (4W2s plus a private business) and they did a great job. The contacted us via email or phone if they had questions regarding transactions but besides that the filing process was very smooth and without any problems. The had the papers ready in time and provided us with a nice booklet for our reference. We paid $500 for our filing which is not cheap but looking at the service we received absolutely reasonable. After a rather disappointing 2012 tax filing (we switched due to a friends recommendation) we will likely go back to LMGW. read more

I have to echo the remarks of some other reviewers here by agreeing that working with LMGW went from being a pleasure to an absolute nightmare following the retirement of our original accountant. The work on our 2014 returns was shoddy and the communication non-existent. We ended up having to pay penalties due to mistakes made by them. We will never use them again. read more

Their practice is reasonably priced and I find him to be a very knowledgeable, experienced, and personable adviser. Taxes aren't fun, but I don't mind them nearly as much with Kevin asking all the questions, catching all the opportunities for me, and completing all the forms. If you decide to work with this firm be sure that you are working with one of the senior partners. After 25 years our CPA retired and boy do we miss her ! Our experiences with two new accountants has made us decide to go somewhere else next year. This firm uses an electronic tax preparation workbook now and you are asked to complete the information 2 weeks before your scheduled appointment - if you are able to complete this workbook on your own you may as well buy Turbo Tax and save your self some money. The accountant we worked with did nothing other than what we had already completed in the form - no questions, no advice, no consulation about tax planning or IRS red flag deductions ... nothing! You would expect that as new clients to her that she would have reviewed the schedules to at least make sure we we getting every deduction available to us - but it felt like we were expected to know in advance . I am capable of doing my own taxes but choose to go to a CPA for the consultation and guidance.... We won't be back here next year ! read more
