Good Service. Great People. Honest. Understanding…read more I broke down mid road trip in little ol' Christiansburg VA. I was worried about finding an honest mechanic in a town I had never been to especially because I had no time to do research. Modern Automotive was the first place that came up in Google and I went there. I was in good hands. I first spoke with Thomas Morris who immediately put me at ease with his honesty and genuine problem-solving attitude. I left my car with them and continued on my trip in a rental. Through a series of MY mistakes and lack of ability to figure out how to get my car back once they had completed the work, it was left there for far more than the original time I thought it would be. But they were extremely gracious with me and helped me figure out a good solution. During this time I spoke much with Chuck Swain (Owner) over the phone. He was incredibly generous, good-hearted and honest toward me. It was so refreshing to meet honest businessmen like these, and I would recommend their service to anyone. Thank you guys.

They told me I would need to leave it there all morning but what they really meant was that they didn't have the time to do it. At 1pm they admitted that they wouldn't be getting to it any time soon. I get it, things happen and things get backed up. All they needed to do was acknowledge the problem and apologize for wasting my time. Instead they handed me my keys back with a smile as if my business was a complete bother to them.

The clerk told everyone they were backed up for days. I said I'd leave my vehicle for as long as they needed it. Got a call Friday 6/20 that the vehicle was ready for pickup and the only thing that was wrong was a signal light. I went in, paid and got my keys AFTER I asked for them. I was finally able to get a ride to pick the vehicle up Monday 6/23 and I noticed the rejection sticker. It was clear the vehicle had not been moved from the spot I parked it, i.e. taken into the shop. I told the my friend who gave me the ride that 99 didn't do anything I asked. She said, "they did the same thing to me! I went in for an inspection and an oil change. They put an inspection sticker on it and said I didn't need an oil change." I called this morning. Tuesday 6/24 and asked for Sherry (the owner). The clerk said "I don't think she's around here" and hung up. I called back to get his name which is Dustin. Update: Dustin called Tuesday 6/24 and asked what I wanted, but didn't offer a solution or options.

He works on all my vehicles. Bottom line: Don does solid work at a fair price. You just need to be flexible with him on your schedule and when he can do the work. He's very matter of fact. Some approach business with him by pushing agendas and expectations. Expect push back from him if you do this. If you want someone to tiptoe around your feelings only to upcharge you or fix things that aren't necessary, you'll be better going somewhere else. He may be gruff, but if you go in making a decision to assume he knows his stuff, and not be triggered...you'll find yourself discovering a gem in Don...and you might just make a friend in the process. Stay away. I went in for a simple muffler replacement (verified by 2 other shops). They quoted me…read more$250 & said they had the muffler in stock. When I arrived, Steve said he had it put on a lift and they "discovered" that all of the pipes and joints were so rusty, that he was afraid that when he started cutting into it, that basically the entire undercarriage would have to be replaced : large rear muffler, large front muffler, the small muffler we spoke about, ALL the piping and "probably more". I asked how much and was told "at least $1200". They said they'd order the parts for the next day. When I left, I could hear odd knocking on the bottom and the smell of exhaust in the front cabin that wasn't there before, or ever. I called back the next day to report this and was blown off with "ma'am, you have an exhaust leak and the knocking you are hearing is because you probably drove over something". I knew then they were not on the up and up, so I played along and asked if my parts came in. They said yes, all but one. I asked what they were missing and was told "a part". He kept saying "just a part" but would not tell me WHAT part. Finally I was forceful and told him I needed the name of "the part". . Steve finally said, the Catalytic Converter. Horses***!. He said I needed that too. Tack on another several hundred dollars, plus labor. Scammers! I took it somewhere else the next morning, and the only thing it needed was the muffler, parts & labor $95. I've heard of stories like this, but, wow, the level of deception was criminal.
