Right on US-1 and next to a lookout for gorgeous Frenchman's Bay, this place is one of those unique places that makes Maine amazing! I had a cup of chowdah and it was not only really affordable for a pint, but really good, with lots of fish and at least 4 shrimp! Also got the planet's best pumpkin chocolate chip cookie! The perfect provisioner for a day out in Acadia! There are limited options for dining in the national park, so the best thing to do is to buy a sandwich that will keep as you tool around the park and explore the forest and shoreline. This is the perfect spot to do it. The staff are super friendly, and there are loads of options for every part of the sandwich, including for vegetarians. They wrap it up nicely, and you have abundant chips and other snacks to choose from to accompany it. We were staying in Sullivan at a nearby cabin for three days. Dunbar's was a quaint little general store that we stopped at everyday. Very convenient, especially since our cabin didn't have a full functioning kitchen. We were able to grab a bite to eat (fresh made subs, soup, etc.), pick from a selection of fresh produce and wine and beer. Service was pleasant each time. read more

Friendly staff, but go elsewhere for lobster or crab roll. Wife and I were laughing at how the paper that wrapped it weighted the same as the "sandwich" itself. The meat was good as it should be, but I'd be astonished if there was more than two ounces of meat. Very familiar with pricing as I get them often, and these just don't hit the mark. read more

Overpriced and not accommodating. We bought 2 12" lobster rolls, asked for some ice so they would not spoil during a 60" trip, and we were told that they had no ice, despite a large display of all their fish for sale which was on ice! They advised us to buy a bag of ice. That did not sit well after spending $50+ at their sandwich counter. read more

Great little store in Sullivan Maine. This place has been open since 1881 (wow!) and has great offerings. From foot long lobster rolls, to a wine and cheese selection they have a lot to choose from. This store was right down the road from the cabins we were staying at and really came in handy for any needs we had during our trip. They have a deli with sandwiches and lots of fresh meats and seafoods. Was happy to have such a convenient store nearby! read more

Now it's just about the coolest small food store you'll find anywhere -- amazing foot-long lobster rolls, fresh fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, various sundries and necessities. Kind of weird reading these Dunbar's reviews. I am always friendly to people working in restaurants and stores around these parts as I figure the work is long hours and lots of picky people to ruin one's day without warning. I find almost all of those working people are consistently friendly back, Dunbar's no exception to that. Anyone who complains about the pricey lobster rolls at places like Dunbar's can go to McD's (inexpensive and not bad at all) or make one at home as that is just a lot of boiling water and shell shucking but takes all the culinary finesse of a good pb&j. And lobsters we got here in Maine, lots and lots of them. But the Dunbar story - saving an abandoned wreck and making it a cool little store - is a good one. They have all three food groups (wine, beer and whiskey) and cookies so large my wife thinks one day soon they'll be as big as a pizza. If I need a six of Bud and a frozen pot pie we've got our wonderfully disorganized Dollar General right down the road and Ellsworth is not that far for "real" grocery shopping. But I dig the vibe at Dunbar's and you can count on my making many return visits. read more

Open since 1881 this is a quaint little general store in a small Maine town, Sullivan. The variety of items that they carry is impressive. The produce section has more than i would have expected for the size of the store. I have found the meat department to be better than in town and I am not surprised, the previous owner Philip Dunbar was know for his fresh cut meat. (Someone must have told them that this was an important part of this little general store.) If you are on a diet, stay away from the "fresh baked goodies" display case. They are just too tempting. Outside is a lovely picnic table area overlooking the water with plenty of seating. I signed my name on the table; is encouraged as they have put out colored markers for that purpose. It's not just a store, it's an experience. read more

We will never shop at Dunbar's store again. We live in the area and my wife and I come in a fair amount for snacks or other things. We were actually super excited when the store reopened, but we will never go there again. This morning, my wife went in to order some breakfast burritos and coffee. She saw that the people working in the kitchen had masks on. The woman behind the counter did not have a mask, but she was behind a barrier. While my wife was checking out, she looked into the kitchen and saw that the cook staff were not wearing their masks while preparing the food that she had just ordered. She asked the woman at the register why they weren't wearing masks and the woman got defensive. She told my wife that the kitchen was a separate company and that she wasn't going to tell them what to do. My wife paid for her food and went over to get her burritos from the kitchen. She politely told the cook that she would feel more comfortable ordering food at Dunbar's in the future if they wore masks while cooking in the kitchen. The cook that she spoke to was a middle aged man and he began yelling at my wife. He told her that he works 12 hour days in the hot kitchen and that no one was going to make him wear a mask, nor would he make his employees wear a mask. He also told my wife that if she didn't agree with the policy, that he didn't want her business and that she should leave. To sum up, my wife made a polite suggestion and this man responded with a full-on tantrum like a child. My wife did not engage with the man and she simply left the store. Both my wife and I work in customer service and we would never speak to a customer the way this man spoke to her. For a company that is probably losing a lot of business to Dollar General down the road, I find it shocking that they would treat customers this way. Everyone can have their opinions about what is happening with the pandemic, but it doesn't seem like too much to ask for people who are preparing food for other people to wear masks. Masks aside, this man's behavior was completely unacceptable. I will be spreading the word about the way customers are treated at Dunbar's and I will not be stopping in ever again. read more

Dunbar's Store is back open and ready for business. Having never visited the original store when opened I cannot compare the old with the new. That said we stopped by to see what they had to offer as it was getting late and we were looking for something to eat. It's a quaint and cozy store stocked with the essentials. We picked up two Phatt Italian subs, some chips, and a four pack of Fogtown Night Nurse American Stout. Sandwiches were huge & tasty and the beer was strong. The chef (I assume owner), was helpful with the menu selection and pleasant to talk to. If you're passing through I highly recommend you stop in and pick up a few items if in town. read more
