Initially we parked in the wrong lot but that worked in our favor (where the bait and tackle shop is). There were lots of families out having picnics and fishing. We did a 1-mile loop in the area and were able to see the yurts. NOTED . Beautiful sites to take in before we ventured to the main lots with the visitor's center. Not only are the trails well marked, but there is ample parking across multiple lots. The attendant at the gate entrance was so kind, welcoming and JOYful! We ventured out on the red trail and it was gorgeous. To my surprise, the trail was full today. It seems that Sweetwater is a populated date spot!!! We saw folks of all ages out with picnic baskets, journals, coloring books, bathing suits ... it was AMAZING! We hiked to the end of the red trail and back, venturing off trail to be clear to the River only once. By far, this was one of my favorite hikes and definitely a place I'll revisit to explore some of the other trails.

The lake is beautiful there, they have a nice bathroom, the campsites even have electric and running water you can use! The one thing I wish I would have known before going out there for the night was that the campsites where you pitch your tent are extremely hard ground and gravel. You'll absolutely want to bring extra cushion for under your sleeping bag. Don't be a fool like me, and wake up in pain haha.

If you are here for the first time turning from the highway, don't take the first right it the entrance for coot's lake. You have to take the second right for the trailhead. This trailhead has one row for parking spaces. You can refer the pictures for an idea. At the end of the parking lot you have the benches and paved entrance for the trail. As soon as you start out of the trail head you will encounter stop sign in the direction towards Rockmart. Overall wen went with the family and had a good time and in most cases you will end up taking good photos with the lake as background.

I will include some of the pictures I have, but I have caught at least 1 fish every time I have been there. I have caught fish on minnows, shad, worms and soft plastics. Mostly large mouth and crappie, but usually at least 1 turtle every visit as well. I have always been greeted with a smile and have never regretted the drive to get there. I am more so writing this review to combat the negative reviews, and possibly provide tips to enhance people's experience. Of course as always some days are better than others, but time of day and water temperature are a thing. There are a lot of people in my opinion that keep too many fish out of this lane which also slows down the fishing during the later part of the summer. Turtles are a nuisance during their breeding season. The feeders are a nice touch and also impact fish movement. Now let's get to the gear. I have learned smaller hooks especially with live bait. I use size 4 or smaller. Slower retrieve works better mid day and later with plastics, while early morning the fish are a lot more aggressive and active. I have fished a lot of different places around both lakes, but I stay away from the smaller lake during snake breeding season. However, if your careful and don't mind getting snagged (and it will happen) this risk near the back of the smaller lake is usually worth it. Of the pictures I'm posting the big largemouth I am holding I caught May 26th around 6 pm. I threw it back so hopefully someone else will be able to enjoy that fight. Good luck and happy fishing..... Approaching the bridge that crosses the marsh grasses seem nice and then a long 3/4 mile hike along a singular path with no roundabout back to the point of origin. When we reached the view of the river (stream) it built up nticipationnfor what we saw towards the end of the trail a nice Mecca of cascading waterfalls. Nothing big but it was cool and pleasant to sit in. To top it off the end revealed a nice wooden covered bridge.

We have lived in the area for 5+ years and we are 5 minutes from this gem and didn't even know it! There is a stroller friendly trail nestled in between trees, and a wetlands area with elevated boardwalk. The trail parallels the Nickajack Creek which flows into the Chattahoochee River, so it is a fast flowing creek. We walked for an hour or so on this scenic path and sat under the gazebo for a moment after our little hike. It's so nice to discover something new and nearby.
