The Dumbarton as seen during one of my helicopter rides
    Fred T.

Hmmmm my first bridge review. We tend to think of bridges as simply part of the roadway and lets be honest they are taken for granted. That is till they are not there or closed. That being said, the Dumbarton will always have a special place in my heart. You see I grew up in Palo Alto, and I can still remember crossing the Old Dumbarton bridge and sheer delight in getting help up because the drawbridge was being used by one ship or another. As with many things in our youth they are often replaced with bigger and better things. But enough wandering down memory lane.... For us Bay Area natives, we know the Dumbarton as the last bridge that crosses the Bay. After this, you need to head further south to Hwy 237 to cross over. The bridge connects the lower Peninsula with the East Bay. On the East Bay side, Hwy 880 connects directly to it. However, for those of us on the Peninsula side, We have 3 options to get to the bridge and 2 of which involve meandering through city streets. Tolls are taken Westbound and unless you are in arental car and staying for a few days, do yourself A HUGE favor and get a FasTrak transponder. Its just easier. If you look South while crossing, you will see where the water from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir crosses and goes under the Bay. Aside from that its pretty much a bridge linking you from A to B. However, the Dumbarton has an interesting advantage. It has a legit bike lane. You can ride over the bridge and visit the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. If you keep going, you can actually cross over to the other side on a roadway/bridge that goes over the toll booths and enter the Coyote Hills Regional Park. (lots of cool biking trails there too)

I usually take this bridge from the peninsula inland towards Hayward or Fremont, and I actually enjoy this bridge. It's not big and flashy like the Golden Gate Bridge or her long sister The Bay Bridge, but the Dumbarton does the job very well. She is seldomly ever congested if you don't go during rush hour. She is short and sweet. Straight to the point! There is an aroma of bay wetlands on the Fremont-Hayward side. Overall; a nice quick connector with a fair view.

The best place I have ever had! Every time I drove there, it makes me feel happy. I go there on the weekends, especially on any special occasions.

    Not too bad this morning

It's like your average bay area bridge, unfortunately I have to cross this thing twice a day 5 days a week to commute to and from work and boy is it a hassle. I live in Fremont off of Decoto Road which turns into 84 and goes straight to the bridge. Traffic is usually backed up all the way over the overpass and it can take quite a bit of time to get to the toll plaza. Going over this bridge always makes me nervous because people just are always flying by and sometimes the wind can really move your car around. There is nothing that I like about this bridge and the smell is horrible and if you have the vents open and the air on then the smell can linger in your car for a little while.

    Heading towards Newark.
    Angela W.

The traffic in the morning going from Newark to Menlo Park is terrible during commute hours, esp. during the rain and any accident. You are driving with the herd as you see Facebook building on your right. It can be just as bad going back from Menlo Park to Fremont. That is, after you are off the bridge you deal with merging traffic on Hwy 880 going south to San Jose or north to Oakland. The only nice part about the commute is east bound, you enjoy the view coming down the bridge. Otherwise, west bound is full of power lines around the marsh before hitting Menlo Park.

Even though it reeks of rotten eggs, I still like this bridge. It rarely have much traffic and I usually find this route to SF to be faster.

Not quite as epic as the San Mateo Bridge, but a quick route across the bay if you're coming from Menlo park or Palo Alto.

The reason I liked his bridge is because there's no traffic, it's fast and the view that it provides at night of the bay.

Yes, trucks can cross Dumbarton Bridge, and the toll for 5 Axels is $26.00.

Does anyone know what became of the truss spans of the old Dumbarton Bridge - transported somewhere else and repurposed, melted down, or...?

House tours are on the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Saturday of the month, from 1 to 3pm. What I liked about this spot is that there's about 2 gazebos in the enclosed Japanese garden with bench seats (no tables) where you can sit and meditate or quietly enjoy the calming ambience of petite Japanese maple trees and rock formations. There's also a tall tree near the front which was apparently planted in 1878, as well as some old olive trees with cool trunks in the periphery of their small and enclosed Japanese garden. There were quite a few bees and butterflies fluttering around during my visit - all signs of a good garden sanctuary for these insects. In the front and center lawn, there's a couple of picnic tables where I saw some locals sitting and having a nice conversation and enjoying the atmosphere. Towards the back is a much bigger barn and open space, which seems like it would cater for events, like an outdoor wedding reception or BBQ style party. During my visit in the late afternoon I saw a few people taking fashion and engagement photos here too. The parking lot looks like it could hold about 10-15 cars. I stopped in here for a quick stroll and visit after running errands in the area, so that I could enjoy some quiet relaxation and wait out the early rush hour traffic before my drive home.

Tucked away in a residential area, Lakeshore is a small-ish, serene, well-kept park with, as the name implies, a lake being the central point. I strolled on the path for a bit. I'm not sure how long the path is, but it seems like a good spot to get a decent walk in, and there were a few walkers and joggers. After stretching my legs for a bit, I grabbed some bench and watched the birds - geese (these guys are huge!), seagulls, ducks, and crows - hanging out and eyeballing me to determine if I had food. They were so cute. There is nothing that gets me feeling better fast than being around animals. The human animals that passed by were nice as well, with smiles and hellos, how refreshing. I spent some time just sitting and resetting. It was good. I need to do this more. Nice park, enjoyed a much-needed reprieve here, and would return.

Our tour was scheduled to end at noon but was still actively running around 12:30, which compressed lunch into only a few rushed minutes before buses needed to depart. Departure became chaotic because the gift shop remained fully active during bus loading, making it extremely difficult for teachers to regroup students and leave on time. I appreciate the historical importance of the site, but future elementary field trip groups should be aware that the pacing, scheduling, and transition management may not align well with the realities of supervising large groups of 4th graders on a tight school schedule.
