Rengstorff House is located on the premises of the Shoreline Parklands. This is a historic Victorian house / mansion and it is Mountain View's oldest home. There is a shared parking lot. My bf wanted to do docent-led tour, but unfortunately we showed up shortly after they closed on that Saturday afternoon (they closed at noon). We walked along the outer perimeter of the estate - hoping to get some photos, but there were some people taking photos at the front of the house, so we ended up leaving. Overall 3 stars, but rounded up to 4 stars because we did not get the full experience for a fair review. read more

We especially loved that there are multiple outdoor spaces to utilize for different portions of the event. The house is a thoughtfully restored historic farmhouse mansion with a museum which highlights Mountain Views start as an agricultural area with North Bayshore having trading ports for goods (Rengstorff landing was one) with SF. The period furniture and artifacts and the house's historical interpretation is run by a dedicated group of volunteers from the Friends of "R" House nonprofit. The city manages visiting hours and history tours are free and volunteer-led. The Friends group also hosts mostly free events at the museum and grounds about 4x/year with family-friendly opportunities like special tours, teas, floral designworkshops, the Victorian Holiday open house, occasional special exhibits, and team up with the Santa Clara Bird Alliance (former Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society) for guided birdwalks around Shoreline Park (a wildlife & recreation area ). Guest donations at the museum go to the Friends. They have links to events/Eventbrite and a virtual history 3D tour of the museum exhibit here: kiosk.friendsofrhouse.org The 3D tour also works on VR googles. We did not have a wedding planner, or really any idea how to even get started. and after meeting with her we knew right away this was our dream venue. There is a list they give you of insurable vendors (If you are thinking about going with this venue I would for sure go off of this! We did not for lighting on accident and last minute had to chage vendors *Which ended up being a blessing with how beautiful it turned out*, but just be aware). The house was vintage and perfect, and a very spacious kitchen to prepare or keep refridgerated anything you might need to. Such a beautiful BEAUTIFUL location to have our wedding this October. We loved how many different spaces the venue had to use for the wedding - we were able to move from one lawn for the ceremony (they had a pretty arch that we could use), the front lawn for reception (where we had lawn games), and the west lawn for dinner, and the brick patio was great for dancing. The inside of the house was also beautiful - it was the perfect place to get ready with my bridesmaids. After dinner, our guests could also walk to the nearby park and enjoy the sunset. Beautiful venue!!! I had to do my dream wedding there. Previous to my wedding my late grandfather celebrated his 50th anniversary wedding there. It was gorgeous. Everything was so lovely and out on the beautiful scenery open. Good for Covid times. So I booked this spot. Soooo reasonably priced! Easy to book also. Then the nightmare started... omg the laundry list of everything that can go wrong went wrong. A bible (thick packet) of the venue rules. Constant battle to get all my vendors approved. Clarity on everything bc believe it or not some things are just not a given. Reassurance on what's provided and not. My biggest stress: Find out that all this time I booked the venue that I didn't pay for set up time for my big wedding. Like why isn't that something brought to my attention that it is needed. I personally assumed I had set up time. I found out 1 month ish to my wedding day and had to come up with more money last min. My fault! So much going on as bride you would think the person renting the venue would have the courtesy to help guide you through your rental. Seemed like it was a "oh well, that's on you" type of thing. My vendors... omg... some who already did events there were getting declined. The hassle of asking some of the vendors to get approved all over again. The policies micro managed for exact wording to match for what RH needs. This place is strict... everything needs to be so perfect. They ask for my guest list / table set up... all vendors needed a license with the city Mt View. Limited capacity to 150 only - for this outdoor event. Charges for ice dumped on the grass was a threat. Benches not moved back. I did a walk thru in October 2021 and then in Jan 2022 and was told different things but I was at the mercy of not pissing off the venue. So I just did whatever and nodded my head. It was so stressful I cried a lot. It was good in the beginning and bad during the process and absolutely beautiful the day of. I don't recommend this place for the whole reason of stress. No fireworks or sparklers. Not even non hazardous powder sparklers with no fire. I can go on... I love that I had my wedding there and it came out really nice. But I went through hell and back. The lighting at night sucks. The rush to get out of there or a fee. No trash cans. Messy bathrooms. The parking was not reserved as promised. My guest almost missed the ceremony parking far. I had names for VIP parking - pointless. My poor coordinator had to chase down too many times to deal with the drama the rep gave her. Lots of unpleasant emails and chats. I wanted to pull my hair out and scream. Planning a wedding is tough, but I found the toughest part was all the drama to have my wedding at RH. Crazy thing... my grandparents wedding was not at all stressful. I almost felt like I was being pranked or picked on. I won't ever forget the terrible experience. Please call me and pick my brain if you want to know more about booking here. I'll share the stories I have. Beautiful venue... but look around, other places are much more kind and nicer to work with. I did my best to just hold it in and not get confrontational with Kristina. My coordinator did the same. Kristina was great when I first booked. After that, I must of been on her shit list bc it was ugly the entire process after. When I had to see her in person it was uncomfortable and my husband recorded on his phone bc she would constantly say one thing and change it up. I got proof. I hate doing this but the truth needs to be known. Maybe I pissed her off or she had a thing for my wedding. We came here for a wedding. It's an old house built by Mr. Rengstorff and converted to a site for designated weddings and small events. It was on outdoor wedding. The wedding itself was great but it was an evening wedding and as the evening wore on, it got colder and more windy. A couple of young ladies wore mini dresses and I don't know how they could tolerate the night chill. Hubby had to get an emergency thin fleece blanket from the car for me to use but it was still not warm enough. I needed my down jacket! There's a side yard for the ceremony and a front yard. It's pretty grassy and thin, high heel shoes are not good to wear here. The buffet dinner was held in the backyard. There were a few tower heaters but not enough. A lot of the guests would circle around the heaters to stay warm. I think we could've used 6 more heaters. If you're considering a wedding here, make sure it's in the heat of summer when the evening temps are still hot. I felt like I was about to go skiing given how cold it was. There's only 2 bathrooms in the house which are not unisex. The women's bathroom has 2 stalls. read more

As a wedding photographer, I am absolutely pleased at this venue. From the rehearsal and assistance while hosting I was appalled. It's a very much all-in-one wedding venue. From a ceremony site, to a reception center. Being able to walk with my couple to the wedding reception and look at all the beautiful views was well worth it. My couple also was able to get a ride from their couples portraits back to the wedding reception area. I'd recommend booking here if your wedding day is meant to be chill and you want more control of your timeline! read more

Working my way through documenting my pre-Yelp experiences of the past - there are so many. Will I ever be able to eat and write up my past, any sooner than new places pop up in the Bay Area? Probably not. But I can try... Rengstorff House, an old Victorian home of the rancher Henry Rengstorff from the 1850s, has been purchased by the city of Mountain View some hundred years later, and moved to its present location in the Shoreline park. It's located near the sailing lake and a Lakeside cafe. I remember the house being restored to its former glory back in the 1990s, complete with classic period decor. The grounds have been updated and beautifully maintained, featuring lush and colorful gardens surrounding the property. When our son has been growing up, we used to come to the lake quite often, and also enrolled him into the summer sailing program. Then, we would walk around a bit, exploring the beautiful wetlands and the house itself. Rengstorff house offers docent led tours, free of charge, and is available as a rental for events, such as weddings and celebratory gatherings. Perhaps large family reunions? I believe they have informative brochures with pricing and lists of approved vendors, to be used as a reception venue. Tour guides are dressed up in Victorian era garb, so you can step back in time for half an hour while listening to the history of the house. It's a fun thing to do once or twice; you can bring out of town guests to share this experience. read more

The perfect setting for my antique country wedding. Rengstorff is a very serene and beautiful place, when planning my wedding got overwhelming I used to visit to go sit in a bench in the garden and relax to think about the happy parts of a wedding. Kristina is the rental director and is very helpful and efficient, great at returning communication. The staff are kind and did many tours for me to show this lovely museum to my parents, husband, and my initial tour to sign the contract. They give you an outside storage area which can be tight for larger weddings, but my modest 75 guest list fit all rentals with a bit to spare. Be advised all your rental entails is the space and the arch, all ladders, lights, chairs, tables, dishes, anything else you have to bring and setup plus tear down are part of your rental time. I did the 8hr discount package and added an extra 9th hour since my setup was strenuous. Biggest issue with this venue was BUGS. They got on my wedding cake, on our mango smoothie dinner drinks, in the lemonade, and many of us got bug bites at the reception. I, as the bride, got bites on my cheek and arms that my photographer will be editing out since it happened halfway through the reception and was in a lot of pictures. I'm sure this contributed to guests leaving early rather than mingling at the tables. I'm told many venues spray for bugs before big events so I would ask if Rengstorff does that or if they could for an extra fee before your event. Perhaps Citronella candles are another option. Great venue at a decent price and I highly recommend them and using their preferred vendor list. read more

what a great historical landmark, just steps from where i live! i only came here for the 1st time to attend an open house/wedding faire, and was simply intrigued by the house, the history, and the original owner who built this house, henry rengstorff (emigrated to california from germany). weeks later, i came for a docent-led tour of the house, and learned a great deal more about the history behind this 19th century victorian house. unfortunately, most of the original fixings, paintings, furniture, other decorative pieces were lost/destroyed, but the curators did a fantastic job in restoring this house to its original beauty (see photos). the outside is lovely as well, with a lawn area to one side, perfect for a wedding ceremony, and another lawn area on the other side, suitable for a reception/banquet. future brides and grooms who are planning to get married in the spring/summer/fall should definitely consider this venue for their wedding. the staff is very knowledgeable and kind, and very passionate about sharing what they know about this house and herr rengstorff. since the tour is free, they rely on donations to maintain the upkeep of this house. parking is free and next to the house. you don't need to make a reservation for the tour, just stop in on tuesday, wednesday or sunday, anytime between 11am - 5pm, and one of the staff will lead you on a tour, which lasts 20-30 minutes. i would actually come back again, just to stand and admire the beauty of this house, inside and out. highly recommended for any visitors to mountain view and silicon valley!! read more

Charlie, our very well-dressed docent gave us a free, fun tour [complete with an Edger Allan Poe reading] of this fully restored, transported, Victorian mansion, that was once said to have the spirit of the late Mrs. Henry Rengstorff. OOOooo O_o But the place was beautifully restored in 1990 after its move to the current location with all the loving detail that the very dedicated volunteers of the "Friends of R House" There have been some upgrades to the kitchen that make it a usable venue for group events and meetings. My good friedn got married here over the holiday weekend, and it was a gorgeous venue! It also was not too hot for a July afternoon, and the cermony and reception was entirely in the shade which was helpful! The major con of this place is that parking is an absolute pain. With families at the lake next door during the summer, it is really difficult to find open parking spaces. There are also only 2 restrooms, so ladies, expect to wait. Also expect to sink into the grass if you're wearing heels. I do know that you have to find all of your own catering, party rentals, etc. which can be a good thing or a bad thing. What fun! Do take a docent-guided tour of the historic Rengstorff House. The tour length varies depending on the docent and the tourists. Ours was an hour. The house was built in 1967 by the German immigrant, Henry Rengstorff. Rengstorff came to the US with $4 in his pocket and hoped to strike it rich finding gold. Instead he bought land and started businesses and became a wealthy American. His house was one of the earliest ever constructed in Santa Clara Valley, now famous as Silicon Valley. The house went to waste but was restored and is in now in excellent condition. Currently docent tours for the house are available Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Do call ahead or check online. You may consider leaving a few dollars donation for the preservation of the Rengstorff House; I did. Before or after the docent-guided tour, you can also do other nearby things. One is to take a walk around the nearby lake. Another is to have a meal at the nearby American Bistro at Shoreline Lake (formerly the Lakeside Café). read more

I wanted an intimate garden wedding that also had water views and I could not have asked for a better venue!! The ceremony is in a shrouded little garden so sound is easily amplified and no issue with guests being grilled under the sun. Working with the administration and booking was smooth as well. The only thing I will caution folks is that the venue comes with nothing, so be prepared to have TONS of vendors, including chairs, tables and lighting.This could potentially be difficult for some who are not ready to handle numerous moving parts on your big day. All in all, would not have chose any other venue. This is where we got married on October 2nd and we couldn't have asked for a better place. From the start we wanted to have a garden wedding - yeah, it's pretty risky, because we cannot control the weather, but hey, this is California, right? the chances of bad weather aren't that bad and on our wedding day, the weather was absolutely gorgeous!! It was important for us to have both the ceremony and the reception on the same location and this place worked well, because of it's layout. We ended up having the Ceremony in the back garden, Cocktails were served in the front garden and the main garden was used for the Reception. The rent sounds affordable, but this is a catch 22, because one thing to have in mind, is that the rent only covers the house and the gardens, which means, tables, chairs, linens, silverware, flatware, glasses, and pretty much everything else required for the ceremony/cocktails and reception needs to be rented, which definitely means extra work in planning and money. The kitchen is very small, so we had to rent an extra oven on top of the oven the caterer was already bringing, to make sure the food could be cooked and served on time - so you get the point? However, the good part about doing that, is the fact that we were able to choose every single thing that we wanted to use and control the quality of the materials to use, which ended up being way more personalized and 100% up to our taste. Another thing that we added and loved it was enhanced lighting to set the mood and it was absolutely beautiful - this is another extra cost, but so worth it. So, I strongly recommend the same... Once it get's dark, it's pitch dark and the light the grounds have is just not enough to lit and to continue with that romantic vibe. This house belongs to the city of Mountain View, so it's not advertised the way other private places are. The website is "old school" and the photos available do not give this place enough credit. So, rather than making a decision based on what's available online, I would just go there to check out the place. One last thing... once you go there, you will notice it get's a bit windy, but the wind comes and goes and I didn't feel it was a bother at all. We did have heaters spread out, to make sure everyone was comfortable with the outside temperature at night Once the wedding is over we start analyzing everything and what we should have done if we knew what we know now and we would still rent this place. They have 3 different (and separate) lawns, which makes it great for dividing off the different events of the evening. We had 150 guests and used the small lawn (to the left of the house) for the ceremony, the large lawn (in front of the house) for the cocktail hour and the reception was held on the right lawn. The Rengstorff House has a great list of preferred venues who are truly comfortable with the land and know what works best. The team there was great to work with and made things easy on us. They even have a day-of coordinator who is there at the day of your event to answer any questions and oversee the house (not a wedding coordinator). We love the Rengstorff House!! I held my wedding here in 2002, and I loved it! This is a great place, esp for wedding that's under 100 people. They currently run an 8-hour weekend rate at $1400. When I rented the place, I had to have a party rental company deliver tables and chairs ..etc to the site. Also we had to take the trash to a dumpster close-by at the end of the day too. They also don't allow red wine on the premise, because of the carpet---it is a historic house after all. This place was definitely affordable. It's a bit windy there too so it doesn't get too hot. I loved my wedding there.. it was relaxing and beautiful. We had our wedding here last August and we were so happy with the venue. There are three separate lawn areas. We used one for the ceremony, one for cocktail hour, and the largest one for dinner. A couple things to consider though: - It's on the smaller side. We had 120 people at our wedding and it was pretty full. Still comfortable/quaint but any bigger will really be pushing it. - The price is relatively cheap, BUT that's because you get just the venue. Tables, chairs, plates, utensils, lights, food, etc all have to be rented/brought in. One little plus side is no required vendors so you can pick whatever you want. - I believe the venue now restricts alcohol to beer and wine only (no hard alcohol). We were fine with this. Plus side is you can bring in your own alcohol and save money. I hit up Costco for the beer/wine :) - Midnight curfew. We had to be out by midnight - meaning all the lights torn down, tables, chairs, etc packed away. So you'd have to end your reception relatively early, or incur extra expense of hiring more people to keep the reception going longer but still be able to tear down by midnight. So it's a little DIY, but totally worth it. read more

We were informed by the rental coordinator that there would be a fireworks show at shoreline the night of our July 3 wedding and that we just might see them. As the event drew near we crossed our fingers, hoping that our guests would be able to see the show. Not only could we see the show because of our close proximity to the set off area but we had an unobstructed view from the front lawn of the house. Guests were very surprised and thought we had planned it ourselves. There are not enough words to describe how much I loved having our wedding at Rengstorff House. I remember visiting it for the first time while venue hunting and knew this was the place for us to exchange vows. There are so many beautiful spots and shots: the house (indoors and outdoors), the bridge, the lawns, the lake (we had a beautiful pink sunset which our photographer caught), the windmill... My sister said upon her first venue visit that the pictures online don't do it justice, even though they are great. So many people came up to us and commented on how they loved it. It was the perfect backdrop to my wedding vision. Kristina, the venue coordinator, was great. She was always available to answer any questions that I had, no matter how dumb it may have sounded. Since I have not planned something at this level, it was amazing to have someone like her to walk me through this important process. The cost for the venue is affordable considering how expensive they are nowadays. However, you are only paying for the grounds. They do offer an arch for free, which is very convenient. However, you will need to rent tables, chairs, lighting, tablecloths, decor, tableware, flatware, HEATERS, etc. It can add up so make sure to budget and plan accordingly. The venue cannot control the weather, so as hosts, you will need to considerate that in getting the rentals and heaters if it is cold and windy for an evening wedding, it is not on the venue. Also, I made sure to warn guests on the website that this was an all outdoor wedding, so heels were not recommended so they had a heads up. In the end, it was completely worth it to me. I forgot how much renting it was, but I know it was under $2000. There is an area for the ceremony, reception, and dance floor. Very well planned out. Theres also a lake walking distance great for pictures (but bring a blanket because there is lots of bird droppings!!!) I attended a wedding here. We had the ceremony in the front and the banquet in the back. It was the perfect size for a small wedding, although 75 is pushing it. We parked in the regular parking lot next to the boat rentals. They let us know that we wouldn't be towed even if we didn't park in the designated parking lot. However, the park can get really crowded during the summer, so I suggest carpooling. The wedding was in the front right lawn, which was well-kept. Surprisingly, the dried fields in the background didn't take away from the lovely sight. Right after the couple said their vows, a flock of birds flew overhead... and dropped some packages on people. Whoops! (note: bring some wipes.) After the wedding, we moved to the back lawn for some dinner. There is a nice "dance floor" right next to the house, so you can bust some moves with your grandma. Drive into the park, drive pass the ranger shack, drive pass the entire golf course area, drive pass Michael's restaurant, now just on the left hand side of the road you will see the Rengstorff House, which is just before you get to the parking lot adjacent to the Shoreline lake. I went to a wedding and reception and didn't even know this place existed! The grounds are beautiful! The house was amazing and I loved the fact that you could walk into each room and look at the history of the house. The wedding was in the front under beautiful tress that shaded the area. The reception followed in the back with views of the water. Who knew this place existed!!! Def check it out next time you want to learn a little bit of history. The staff is very friendly! For the longest time I had no idea this existed here. Ive lived in the area for a while now but never went past Shoreline amphiteater and the golf course. Foolish of me. I went however towards sunset and only after I had walked around the grounds and preserve first.
