*Halloween themed review. Boooo!*…read more Stumbled onto this beautiful cemetery as it is right next to the Sonoma Overlook Trail. After hiking that trail down by the staging area where the cars are parked, I noticed an open gate leading to the cemetery which is in the same hills. I don't find cemeteries scary or creepy but rather reverent and humbling. Ive visited many cemeteries whether a family involvement or just to pass through and observe. And I have found that all are different, some are more interesting than others. I like ones with more landscape features such as hills, more plant life/trees, well laid out/organized. I don't care for one's next to modern commercial buildings or when there are more dirt or concrete than plant life. That is just a personal aesthetic preference. This Mountain Cemetery fits its name, as well as my eye and senses. It is beautiful just to stroll around if you are not scared of the nature and essence of death. Every culture handles it in its own ways and i can respect them all. It's how we honor and remember those who pass and gave is what's more important to me. The older headstones most with birthdates from the 1800s seemed to be higher up in the hills. The more recent ones seem to be lower. But I loved all the oak and cedar trees, lots of shade. There was even a thick patch of prickly pear cactus. There's also a veterans cemetery right below this public one. That one is very manicured and succinct. There are trails that weave through all this. To hike these hills, you will not only get a great dose of fresh air and exercise, but you may also get a moment to thank those that have lived and contributed; and more importantly to me, to appreciate those who are still currently here. Beautiful walk, views and discoveries of families, years and stone styles. It is an active cemetery, so be respectful of the environment. There is a parking lot and it is connected to a bunch of trails. In fact there is a street sign in the middle of the cemetery guiding you to the main forest trail. They were amazing as I navigated through last minute, challenging complications with my mom's remains leading up to her burial.... and they didn't even handle her or cremate her when she passed (an East Bay mortuary did). They truly went above and beyond even coming to pick up my moms remains at my home and finding a way to ensure it would arrive safely close to her burial site since I could not take her on a plane with her urn. They were kind, compassionate, professional, thorough, and go above and beyond at a time when it's really needed. Thank you Eugene, in particular!

It's just a disgrace that a place for one's final resting place is so neglected. Many headstones and markers have been damaged. There is little semblance of order or a system of designated plots. I was attempting to locate my sister's grave and was unsuccessful after a couple hour search. Sonoma City Hall is closed Friday's, so I couldn't inquire about a plot map. Being a city cemetery, I would suppose they would have that information.

Getting here takes you through the countryside, with vineyards and farms surrounding the landscape. The cemetery is located not far from Sonoma's town center... about a 2 minute drive. Parking is no problem here. The hall that sits adjacent to the cemetery has an abundance of parking spots. This is a small but impressive plot of land. The black marble headstones align in rows surrounding the center of the cemetery. At center, there are flags representing each military branch surrounding the large Star of Honor. On the star, the names of the vets buried here are engraved. And somewhere on this star, is engraved the name of an old friend. We were in the service together, and he passed away while still in. I come pay my respects almost yearly, in what becomes a bittersweet moment. But this beautiful and peaceful place, a just final resting place for my old friend.

And in the process of finding it, there was a lot of searching and walking the cemetery. It is in very good condition, one of the "lawn" style cemeteries rather than "park" style. Laid out in lines with sections and lanes between them, it's an easy walk and in fact a number of folks were here that were clearly not mourners but walkers. I would suggest that if you are walking, do so respectfully and no, dogs are NOT permitted in the cemetery at any time. Ripley was born in Santa Rosa n 1890. He moved to New York in 1913 to work for the New York Globe. Writing a regular feature, it grew from weekly to daily publication and was soon syndicated to a variety of newspapers around North America. At the height of its popularity it was estimated that "Believe It or Not" was being read by daily by 80 million people. On May 27, 1949, Robert Ripley succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 59. He is buried alongside his parents here. Ripley's burial plot is in the LOT section that is sort of between the Santa Rosa Memorial Park and the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery. We are currently navigating the devastating loss of my close relative, who passed away while under the 'care' of her 'husband.' Despite the fact that the biological family--not the 'husband'--has fully funded the burial and the headstone, the administration is stubbornly siding with his demand to include his name on the monument. Without a head stone it has been very difficult for mourning family to even identify where she is buried. They have refused all attempts at compromise. The cemetery personnel have remained completely intransigent, ignoring the family's wishes and the specific circumstances of this tragedy. Rather than being a place of peace and healing, their rigid adherence to "standard protocol" over common sense and financial responsibility has added unnecessary trauma to an already heartbreaking situation. If you are looking for a facility that values the input of the grieving family members who are actually responsible for the arrangements, look elsewhere.
