Lots of
birds
but no
ducks
A cool, uninhabited island about 1 miles due south from the mouths of the Menunketesuck and Patchogue rivers. It's frequently confused with Menunketesuck Island but Duck has a huge chimney sticking out of the middle and is one mile to the west.
The island is a nesting site for many birds so you can't land there during nesting season, The authorities use to look the other way if you stayed on the beach area but some idiots starting lighting huge bonfires and making a lot of noise so now the ban is strictly enforced. If you do yak or sail around the island beware of a nasty rip and rocks extending about a half mile to the south. If the tide and strong wind are opposite 6-8 foot standing waves are possible. You will die if you ignore it.
In spring the island becomes a tsunami of huge birds. Kayaking around the island you will see egrets, ibex, and hurons all building nests there. The east side of the island becomes a blanket of white with all the egrets tending their young. Egrets almost became extinct in the early 1900's because of the demand for their feathers in women's hats. Fortunately such idiocy stopped and the birds made a quick and spectacular return. I have even seen rare oyster catchers, with there huge orange beaks and beady little eyes sitting on rocks. Ospreys fly over head and cormorants dive for fish, just about everything but ducks. In the winter seals can be seen resting on the rocks nearby. You can always hear them barking before you see them.
Duck Island has a long and interesting history. It used to be much larger but relentless erosion and the hammering of the '38 hurricane took it's toll. At one time or another it was a smallpox and tuberculosis hospital, burned by the British in 1793 and was a place where rum runners hid their booze before bringing it to the main land. Captain Kidd even visited and hid his gold here. The last one is somewhat suspect, although I have heard the story from old people in the area that a gold coin was found on the island years ago. I've never found any gold but I did find some old bottles still with liquid in them. Didn't drink it but it probably was left over from the days of prohibition.
A very cool and interesting little island. In the winter feel free to land and explore but during the nesting season just paddle or sail around it from a distance. Let the birds go about their business in peace. read more
