However, I'm not a wine drinker, so it didn't really feel like a good deal for me. I would've rathered they include the apron instead. The class runs from 6-9pm, which was a little on the later side for me to really want to eat, but I guess when you're running a class on a weekday, you have to accommodate work end times. Class is in a conveniently located Grant Macewan building, and it includes parking in the campus parkade across the street. The classroom is very nice. There's a large family style table and then the kitchen area. The set up of the class itself is a little awkward. We sat around the kitchen prep area, which would've benefited from some mirrors so we can see what the instructor was doing. They do have cameras behind the instructor, but then the TV screens are located behind you, which really doesn't help much at all unless you keep turning around to look at it. The instructor did encourage students to come around and watch, but after a long day at work, sitting and watching is more preferable.. The instructor was good, very informative. The other kitchen staff were nice as well. It was a fun experience, and they offer a variety of classes, it's just the price point is a little on the higher side compared to other cooking classes offered in the city. Take out boxes are provided if you have leftovers or want to share what you've made. Recipes from the class are also provided.

Attending a presentation there this past week, I finally had the opportunity to see what Kitchen by Brad had to offer. At the front of the establishment is a reasonably large room, a perfect venue for the presentation I attended. Offered that evening were a variety of nibbles, presented tapas style, all of which were delicious! Standouts for me were short ribs which were prepared to delicious, tender perfection (unlike many places where they can be tough and/or dry). Two other items that were standouts were wonderfully prepared jumbo prawns in a spicy sauce and a "to die for" stack of candied bacon. Numerous other items were also offered, all well prepared and very tasty. Also offered were above average pairings of a white and red wine, and a very good prosecco. Service was provided by a very capable and friendly young lady and Brad made numerous appearances as well. If you have a meeting, presentation, or moderate sized family gathering, you owe it to yourselves to call Kitchen by Brad and see what they have to offer and if they can accommodate your needs.

Chef Zach got us started on Veal Tonnato, a beautifully seared piece or veal with carrot, celery and onion along with some fresh herbs and white wine. We made a lovely sauce to top the veal with egg yolks, olive oil, capers, parsley, anchovy fillets, tuna (which we skipped), and vinegar. It was perfectly cooked, flavourful and oh so tender! The pasta was agnolotti with escarole and ricotta. Since we've made pasta at home many times, so we basically rocked this out! It was a filled pasta with veg and ricotta, ground chestnuts and herbs. Very veg forward but incredible flavours! We shared our pasta with some lovely young ladies who's dish didn't turn out well (not their fault). The dessert was gnocchi fritti, which is basically a zeppole. Yummy fried yeast dough sprinkled with powdered sugar. It was crispy on the outside and tender in the inside and surprisingly tender! Chef Zach is a great teacher, he had lots of good tips and kept the class moving along at a decent pace. We enjoyed some lovely red wine with our food and while we were cooking which always helps. It was a busy day in the Sorrentino's kitchen with lots of catering going on but the other chefs still had time to answer all my questions about what they were doing. Chef Jeff was very helpful and interesting to talk to! I absolutely adored the cooking class. I LOVED being in their kitchen and chatting with all the chefs!!! Today absolutely validated the cooking skills I have, gave me some new ideas and reignited my inner foodie passion! I'm so ridiculously in love with this place!

The event is put on primarily by Dupe and Seun, however, they have help from other people as well who were there to help explain dishes! "Buka" stands for Nigerian Street Food. I had the opportunity of going to an event at Cafe Levi. They had booked the space and kitchen to be able to host a Nigerian lunch! I am not familiar with Nigerian food at all, so this was a completely new experience for me and my partner. They began with a powerpoint presentation which was actually very helpful because it showed the different types of foods in different areas. We had a chance to look at the different types of Nigerian spices that are used in the food - we passed them around. We were very well educated before we tried the food. They were so nice to accommodate me as a vegetarian! I loved the beans in particular because they were so spicy and delicious. My partner almost died though because it was so hot. it was very funny. I believe they do cooking lessons! I will definitely be trying one of these in 2020 and can't wait! This is definitely an experience that you don't want to miss!

I'd sampled some of their food at a Yelp event in the past but I was so excited to get to try an entire meal. Vegans and vegetarians: there are so many delicious options! We had the peppered broccoli, the vegetarian jollof sushi, the vegetarian buka pies and the jollof rice for dinner with the puff puffs in spicy chocolate and chin-chin poppers for dessert. The jollof rice is pretty spicy (which I liked) and it pairs perfectly with the broccoli. I loved everything and we had plenty of leftovers. The standout is definitely the puff puffs. They're kind of like a mini doughnut covered in chocolate sauce (with a kick). I can't wait to attend a cooking class in the future but at least for now, I'm happy to have the option to order delivery from them on Saturdays.

The instructor started off by getting everyone an apron and providing some basic safety guidelines. Then she moved on to explain what they were going to cook for that session. The instructor got the the kids who were in the 6-10 year old range engaged quite well. The kids made some tacos, some guacamole as well as mockaritos (virgin margaritas) as well. I can't comment on the taste of the food because I didn't try it. However the kids seemed to enjoy it and were quick to finish off their plates. Overall the kids enjoyed this unique birthday party experience. I am seriously considering teaming up with them for maybe an office team building session.

Our event was from 1-4 pm. There were 9 adults and 4 children (the youngest was 3 years old). Once we entered the kitchen, we separated into our small groups of 2-3 people (mothers paired with their daughters). Pheap (the owner) had already measured and prepared all the ingredients for us. During the class we didn't have to follow any recipes (she shares her recipes via email). We saved a lot of time and were able to make a lot of food! Pheap would demonstrate each step before we would try to do them. She was extremely organized. We had plenty of space to work and all the tools we needed to get the job done. There were sinks nearby so we could wash our hands whenever we needed to. We didn't have to deal with sharp knives, powered kitchen tools or hot ovens, so this activity was safe and kid friendly! We rolled dough, made mini pie crusts, put the crusts into the tins, mixed ingredients and decorated cakes! Pheap put all our food into a fast cooking oven. She did all the planning and hard work for us! All we had to do was relax and have fun! I had an AMAZING time here! In a mere 3 hours, we made mini quiche, mini blueberry pies, scones, macaroons, cucumber sandwiches, strawberry parfaits and we decorated mini 3 tiered cakes! Not only did I experience my first ever High Tea, but I was proud in knowing that I participated in making the food! Afterwards we enjoyed our food in the beautiful dining area! This was an excellent way to spend quality time with family and friends! Check out the menus on the Palates website and see what types of food you might want to make. There are so many options to choose from! I definitely recommend this place!

All I can say is: IT'S ABOUT TIME. As someone who loves to experience different cultures through…read morefood, I am thrilled to finally begin to see Indigenous cuisine on the Edmonton / Amiskwaciwâskahikan / culinary tapestry. I am a firm believer that tasting a culture's food builds some of the strongest bridges and I only hope to see more of this coming out of our vibrant Indigenous community. Pei Pei Chei Ow (pronounced "pe-pe-s-chew") is an incredible place to start. They're serving post-colonial Indigenous food - but not only that. It's an immersive experience as you dine inside of the Whiskeyjack Art House located in McCauley, surrounded by beautiful Indigenous-made works of art. Nominated as one of Canada's Best New Restaurants 2022 in enRoute magazine and named Best Lunch Restaurant 2023 in EDify Magazine, I couldn't possibly wait to try this restaurant for myself. I wasn't sure what to expect but was so completely open to anything and everything. Entering the small foyer area, you will find a counter at which to place your food order as well as a small "store" area selling a variety of locally-made Indigenous goods. I jumped in immediately and began to peruse the multiple chalkboard menus and chatted with the friendly and helpful staff member. The restaurant closes quite early each day (they're open until 6pm) which is why they're largely considered a great spot for lunch. I visited for an early dinner on a Saturday and ran the risk of some of the items being sold out already. Unfortunately, two of the menu items were sold out by the time that I arrived but thankfully neither were ones that I had been intending to order. However, the lesson here is that for the best selection, visiting for lunch probably is advisable. We placed our order and selected a place to sit. Seating is extremely minimal. In the front area there is a two-top and some counter seating with about three stools. But if you venture just a little bit further into the gallery you will be met with the best seat in the house. A lone table for four in the larger gallery space, surrounded by fine Indigenous art. The result is a truly special dining experience, combining cuisine with beautiful visuals. It would have been nice to include some Indigenous music to really complete the sensory story. I loved the added touch of a vase of sage leaves on the table. This felt like a true hidden gem immersive experience and I was honoured to be a part of it. With Scott Jonathan Iserhoff at the helm, Pei Pei Chei Ow focuses on flavourful contemporary Indigenous cuisine based on local sustainably harvested ingredients and inspired by traditional recipes with a modern twist. Inspired by the land, life, and seasons that surround us, the menu explores and highlights Indigenous food in today's society. Starting with beverages you will discover a cimarronez coffee and a sweetgrass iced coffee on the menu - and they also have a beverage loyalty card which would be very handy for grabbing coffees on the go. I was most interested in the Mee-Ni-Sha-Piy (Saskatoon berry soda - $6.00). Indigenous to Alberta, Saskatoon berries are a huge pride of the prairies. Sipping the delicate and effervescent beverage I couldn't help but notice that it reminded me of shrub - a drink made with a drinking vinegar syrup, Turns out, I wasn't far off. Mee-Ni-Sha-Piy is made with muddled berries, sugar, and apple cider vinegar. This mixture is then combined with soda to create a lovely and unique beverage that is clean and refreshing. A must for the summer! I was excited to order the Three Sisters salad which is made with corn, squash, and beans. When planted side by side, these three crops help each other during growth, resulting in better yields at harvest. I loved the idea of presenting this concept in the form of a salad. Unfortunately, our server came back to our table to report that the salad was no longer up to the correct quality and that they would have to serve us something else. They then went above and beyond to correct this situation. Not only were we served the Spring Salad ($15.00) instead, but we were also given complimentary Arancini ($12.00) and three Tarts ($4.00 each). This was totally unnecessary but completely wonderful! What seemed like a simple spring salad revealed itself to be so much more. This dish was the biggest surprise of the meal for me because I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Beautifully fresh greens were accented by verdant leaves of mint. Puffed wild rice created a crunchy, textural dream. Slices of fresh apple brought a sweet acidity. Incredibly balanced, this salad was a delight. The one Indigenous food that most people have tried is Bannock ($2.00 per piece) and so of course I needed to taste the Pei Pei Chei Ow version. Bannock is a simple pan-fried Indigenous bread that is somewhat dense in texture and usually has a really delicious and caramelized crust. Add a pinch of salt and you're in for a heavenly treat!
