Oh my God, I was just going to leave a review about the awful experience I just had at the pharmacy here, but I see other reviewers have already covered it great detail. But I'll describe it anyway. After going to a nearby urgent health care and being diagnosed with the flu, I headed over to Duane Reade to pick up my prescriptions. I have a fever, chills, delirium from the fever, and I just want to get my Tamiflu into my system and start recovering. The line is halfway to the back of the store, and of course they only have two of the three registers covered. I was starving and decided to get dinner, since the prescription was certainly not going to be ready yet. I come back a half hour later, wait on the line, and the woman tells me they never received the prescription. I want to be clear, the urgent care is stellar, and I'm sure the prescription was sent. I go back to urgent care and tell them, the PA rolls his eyes, making it clear that this is something they deal with with Duane Reade often. He suggests in the future I use CVS, and I agree; there just isn't a CVS close to my apartment. He sends the prescription to DR again. I go back, wait in line again, the same woman tells me they got it, and they're working on it now. I go sit in the waiting area. She knows I'm waiting. After the other people waiting have gotten their prescriptions, I decide to go up and check on the status of mine. Almost an hour has passed. I have been sitting in the waiting area for an hour, in full view of this woman. The other cashier is sitting on the floor sorting prescriptions, and the woman who was helping me is shuffling handfuls of prescriptions around from the pharmacist area to the bins in the customer service area. No customers are being helped. The line is around 10 people long. Finally she comes back to her register and pulls up my account and tells me that they don't have the Ibuprofen and need to order it. I say no problem, it's just Ibuprofen; it's the Tamiflu I need. She wanders off and eventually comes back and tells me they don't have that either. I will admit I was a bit irate at that point. She let me sit there for an hour. She says she can check if the Steinway location has it. I assume she decided not to bother since I was being a jerk at that point, so she just went back to helping the line and ignored me. I left. I went back to urgent care. They resent the prescription to CVS on Steinway. I walked around to CVS. There were only 5 people ahead of me on line. The prescriptions were ready for me when I got to the counter. Avoid the Duane Reade on Broadway and 35th. They do not care about their customers, and i don't blame them, TBH. Under serving customers is a corporate policy. Think about how many Duane Reades and Walgreens have been shut down in the neighborhood the past few years. How can they not have enough pharmacists, or enough cashiers to cover three registers when they've put dozens of pharmacists and cashiers out of work in the past few years? I work in a retail environment for a very successful company that has built its success on the simple idea that the customer comes first. Everything we do takes a backseat to making sure customers are served. The idea of a customer asking me for something, going to find that we don't have it, and then just going back to work and leaving the customer standing around for an hour is just astonishing to me. And at Duane Reade, it's literally corporate policy to treat its customers that way. read more

Astoria's pharmacy is the most unprofessional I have encountered. They consistently fail to answer their phones when contacted in advance. Their refills are sloppy, and if you do not actively monitor your prescriptions, they will neglect your needs. The appearance of the staff is also appalling, and their overall demeanor is unprofessional. If you are employed at a pharmacy, it is crucial to maintain a professional appearance and be attentive to your duties. Prior to acquiring Rite Aid customers, the pharmacy was known for its exceptional service. However, the acquisition has resulted in a decline in quality, making the pharmacy feel like a second-hand shop that excessively charges customers through their coupon RX program. CVS was a disaster, but they have successfully rectified the situation and are now thriving with satisfied clients. I strongly advise against using this pharmacy, as they have let the only person who knew about their issues go and not mention amazing pharmacists.Don't go here read more

The absolute worst is pharmacy you could ever go to. Skeleton crew staff, not helpful, rude. The pharmacy will cancel your orders without telling you, give you the wrong dosage and move like molasses. They take on average 15-20 minutes to wait on a single customer. They keep elderly people waiting 45 minutes and still mess it up. I will never step foot in a Duane Reade or Walgreens again. No company can competently run in NYC as of 2025. read more

Duane Reade has gone downhill so fast over the years, I predict they will be going bankrupt soon. This location is always a circus. One pharmacist working at all times. One cashier, if you're lucky. Always a line at the pharmacy. It takes on average 5 hours for them to fill a single prescription. They break for lunch right in the middle of the day, and instead of having other employees cover, they close completely so there is an enormous line when they reopen. Their delivery option never works from this location, yet works at every other Duane Reade. Everything is locked. Shampoo? Employees get angry when you ask them to open something. The cashiers in the front are rude and they overall suck completely. I will be switching to a mom & pop pharmacy asap as they are the only reliable pharmacies now. read more

The pharmacy at this location is so disorganized. Waiting in line for a flu shot, all while two staff behind the counter get into an argument for everyone to hear. He looked up my information on the computer and said he'd be back with paperwork for me to fill. But he got so into arguing with his colleague that I never got it. Another staff finally came to the counter and got it for me. I was told to wait a few minutes for the shot. The person behind me was there for a flu shot also, but after about 15 minutes, she was called before me. I waited for about 40 minutes before I went up to the counter to inquire. Apparently the pharmacist just didn't "see" my paperwork. I finally got my shot but left feeling pretty pissed about it. This is also the pharmacy that's closed on the weekends. I like this Duane Reade. I go in here a lot. I don't buy things every time, but it's a good convenience store. The cashiers, although a little slow at times, are always friendly. The store is always clean, and they layout is organized. It's a bit small, so it's actually really easy to find what you are looking for when you are in this store. (A little sidenote: I love the Duane Reade brands snacks as well!) The store is conveniently located on Broadway, just 5 blocks from both the N/Q train and the R train. My only wish is that they would extend their hours a little bit. I feel like they don't open quite early enough. There is something seriously wrong with the pharmacy. My Dr. sends 4 prescriptions every month to them. One is a controlled substance and can't be filled for until sometime after they receive it. I usually call to make sure things are in order around the time it needs to be filled. Last week I called 3 times, was put on hold, disconnected, put on hold again, then someone put the receiver down and forgot about it, so I could hear all the business being transacted. When I finally got through to someone (after 45 minutes), I was told the prescription had expired. I asked why it wasn't filled before expiration, they told me it was the system and that my Dr. should send the prescription in a couple of weeks after I see him. I wondered how a place could lose the prescription and was told "It's the system". Two other meds were due to be refilled this week and I got a message saying it would be ready on the 11th. Then I got another message saying it would be the 15th, then another saying the 21st. I was concerned so I went to the pharmacy to ask about it. Was there a problem getting the meds? No, it was really busy what with the new booster and they were short on time. I'm in favor of people getting the booster but they're too busy to fill their scripts? They told me it would be ready today but I got a message saying something was wrong and my Dr. needed to call. He called and they had him on hold on the Dr's line for 27 minutes. (He was steamed.) This is the height of irresponsibility. I picked up my meds and am never going to trust them them with a prescription again. read more

This Duane Reade rarely has anything I'm looking for that other Duane Reades sell when it comes to make up, hair care or body stuff. I was also very recently disappointed when I tried to purchase a pre-lit, faux Christmas tree here (last night actually...) that was priced at $12.99, there was also some 'buy 1 get 50%' thing going on in the holiday section so I can also picking up a star topper (faux is best for our apartment - less maintenance - etc, etc.) The cashier scanned the tree box and said it was $34.99 - From $13 to $35 is a pretty sizable increase - I would have been good sport at $20. I asked the cashier to get the manager because when something is labeled with a price then that's the price. I've worked in retail, if a pricing error is made it's not the customer that should suffer - the store should suck it up and be more mindful about how they price things. The manager came over and said that she had put the wrong label on it because it was a "garbage label" - it was VERY neatly put put on the tree box and clearly a result of an error that no one was taking ownership for. The cashier even said it was haphazardly placed in the front of the box when that was a complete LIE and my boyfriend is thankfully my witness. After I stressed that the cashier was mistaken and that the price tag was indeed neatly stuck on the top and pulled off by the cashier before the manager got to the front, all of a sudden the cashier became mute. The manager said she had labeled the box with "garbage labels" and can't give sell it to us for the price it was labeled with...I decided to bring my money elsewhere and ended finding a better tree for $12. It's 4.5 feet tall, fluffs out nicely and is pre-lit with multi-colored lights. I already disliked this Duane Reade for always being out or not carrying things that other Duane Reades do, but after my experience here last night and the blatant lack of customer service here - this was the last straw. Don't come here. Go to Rite Aid on 31st and Broadway or support the local pharmacy up the block closer to the train station. read more

I like this DR a lot. Good selection of everyday items. We mostly buy generic meds (ibuprofen, Tums, lactaid pills, etc.), beauty products, and vitamins here, with the occasional odd home-y item like a small fan. The pharmacy is quick and helpful as well. read more

I will do my best to accomplish this in precisely 141 words With great sarcasm I say, joy, just what Astoria needs (and more specifically the Broadway and Steinway area), another drug store. Well, not much we can do about that so... The place just opened on February 6th. The store has a nice, brand new look to it. Using new DR signage, modern displays and more. Very clean, went up practically overnight and they have been offering a lot of discounts and coupons out front. It is in a bit of a smaller space than other surrounding Rite-Aids, DR and former Eckerd's but they have carts that roll. They roll! The pharmacist actually gets a big thumbs up because he helped fill an order when a neighboring pharmacists was a bit more difficult. In the end so far, it is just another drug store. This is not a bad Duane Reade! My biggest beef with it, as with all Astoria pharmacies, is that they don't carry Seventh Generation Disposable Diapers. What gives? This whole neighborhood is positively devoid of them (and it's getting pretty irritating having to go into Manhattan or Williamsburg to buy my baby diapers). Inexplicably, they do have Justin Bieber barbies. Get your priorities straight, Duane Reade! The sales clerk was very nice and patient as I stepped to the side to load up the stroller undercarriage with my purchases, so they get props for that. Also, I was able to snap up better baby products there than I am at the Rite Aid closer to my apartment--including a Keith Haring "Radiant Baby" bib and some Happy Baby organic sweet potato puffs. I don't know that I'm going to walk this far away from home for a pharmacy--particularly one that doesn't carry my #1 needed baby supply--but it would definitely replace the Rite Aid in my weekly routine if it were closer. read more

dont believe the liberal media hype saying that paper towels and toilet paper is hard to find cause at duane reade on broadway in astoria i found enough of both to supply a small nation in africa. this particular d.r. has plenty of foot traffic and i notice many folks buying beer before hitting the hookah joints on steinway that dont serve booze. i got my scott paper towels for 5 bucks for 6 rolls and them rolls have gotten really thin and i got my walgreens brand bathroom tissue paper for 5 bucks for 9 giant rolls and its just as good as scotts. i did grab the weekly sales flyer and picked up a few more things on sale, i was pondering if i should grab a box of female pads which was also on sale but unless i get a nose bleed or make medical history i declined. good d.r. in astoria thats well stocked , clean , christmas decor ready and the magazine section has all the latest mag rags for my enjoyment. read more

I am an avid shopper of Walgreens and Duane Reade for my mothers medicines and had to go to this location because it was the only one that had what I needed. I scheduled a pickup via the app because my money is very scarce and I noticed buying it on the app made the item 5 dollars cheaper. I grabbed the item and told the Indian/Asian woman with the head wrap that I did a Curbside order but I picked it up already so she does have to. She got angry at me for making her job easier and went on her device and canceled my order right in front of me and when I asked her why it's canceled she lied and rudely said because the computer thinks it's out of stock which wasn't true because there were several of them on the shelves and nobody went to the shelves to verify so how could her or the computer know. If it was out of stock in the first place then the order wouldn't of been able to go thru. She did this purposely and out of spite just because she didn't understand why I just paid at the register normally. That's why I don't buy in-store anymore because of the rudeness of the employees who judge you. I am calling it in and filing a complaint with corporate because this is discrimination and pettiness. If she wants to play games I can be petty too. I'm tired of this ghastly behavior whenever I have to shop in there. The drugstore wars of the Broadway area started in the early 2000s, and left the landscape cold and decimated. Violence between Eckerd and Rite Aid begot violence. But one large chain drugstore has survived; The Duane Reade near the funeral home (which now has the ability to hold respectful, tasteful, yet modern ceremonies in which the remains of your loved ones are conveyed into space for a proper burial). You know that your woman will gleek if you do not have her space beer home in time for Law and Order: Space Crimes. You navigate your hover bike past marauding hoards, which include the bums who hang out in front of the bodega by Subway and who pee on the wall at the Broadway MTA monorail station. Somehow those bums have survived until 2035. You enter the Duane Reade, and you think how futuristic the lighting and design elements must have seemed to primitive Astorians back when it opened in 2009. You make it home, space beer in hand, to watch a quality procedural drama with your woman. Large chain drugstores do not specialize in customer service. Where they really excel is in the acquisition of real estate, and the conversion of said real estate into chainstores. Soon, they will be all we have in the neighborhood. The pricing points are the same at most of these stores, and the staff are of the same dubious level of competence, so you may as well go to this store. Because it has a futuristic look and clean aisles. I wish they would stock more Nivea for Men products, though. They don't have my oil control shaving cream. read more

In a city of drugstores who don't give a hoot, the Duane Reade on Broadway shines like a beacon of hope. It's clean, free of homeless people, and is staffed by the nicest pharmacists of all time. I first started going here (out of my way, in fact), when I lived on Steinway because I had such a great customer service experience. When I was going on vacation and needed my prescription early, the pharmacists worked tirelessly with my insurance company to accomodate me. Since my insurance company is run by a pack of incompetents, they would not budge on giving me my prescription early. Right - like I'm going to abuse my birth control - right on, guys. [end of rant]. One of the pharmacists worked with me and though she had to sell me the prescription for full price, she let me come back and get credited for the original account at a later time.
