My boyfriend and I just finished our 7 hour Rome by day in a golf cart, and WOW it has exceeded our expectations! My boyfriend and I had 3 nights and 3 days in Rome. We found DGS through trip advisor and read all the great reviews. I emailed Roberta and Miriam and they were so helpful and answered any and all my questions over email. After inquiring, we decided to book our trip with them. Here is a little bit of insight of what we booked and details of our trip:
We arrived on a Sunday morning and we were picked up by DGS for 30 euro. They had our last name on a card and picked us up right outside of the exit/baggage claim. I highly recommend being picked up by them because you don't need to worry about where to go or how to get from the airport to your hotel. The price is not too bad either.
After being dropped off at our hotel, we had a little over 9 hours before our first tour, Rome by Night (in a golf cart). We took a nap and at 9PM we were greeted at our hotel lobby by Ivano (Roberta's husband). He was so nice and has a great personality. We drove by/to many of the important historical sights (Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps, Coliseum, Pantheon, Capitoline Hill, etc.). We stopped at all these sights and Ivano gave us some information and we got out of our golf cart and were able to walk around and take pictures. We drove through the narrow alleyways (which we wouldn't have been able to see in a normal car) while listening to the history of Rome and the areas we drove through/by. This guide was 2 hours long and well worth it! It is not quite as busy at night and you get a different view of the city with the stars above you.
We booked a 7 hour tour for the following morning. At 9AM we were greeted by Pietro in a golf cart. Now, the golf cart is not normally an option for the 7 hour day tour. You must request it. DGS normally operates this tour with a Mercedes van. Although the van sounds great because of air conditioning and comfort, I would recommend a golf cart if you are with a group of no more than 3. Only 3 people can fit in the golf cart (plus the driver). I asked for this option while booking before arriving in Rome, and I am SO glad I did. The places we zipped through could not have been achieved by car.
So, getting back to the beginning of the tour, we were greeted by Pietro. As soon as we got in the golf cart he started giving us insight on the history of Rome. Now, Ivano did too the night before, however, Pietro went more into detail especially since we had 7 hours with him. We stopped by the same historical sights as the night before and more. We went into the coliseum (DGS purchased tickets for us in advance and we paid them for the tickets at the end of our trip) and it was amazing. We went to all the other sights as well and learned SO much! Pietro is so knowledgeable about the history of Rome and seems to know every alleyway, architecture, sights, and more! He was so animated and kept the tour so interesting! At 1PM we were hungry and he took us to a local restaurant that none of the tourists no about. IT WAS PHENOMENAL. The food was incredible and Pietro ordered our lunch for us (which was so kind of him) and let my boyfriend and me eat while he stepped aside to get coffee and wait for us. After our lunch we continued our tour. I saw everything I wanted to see in the 7 hours without it feeling rushed or feeling overwhelmed with all the information. Pietro was an AMAZING tour guide and felt like a friend. We are so incredibly pleased with our tour. We just came back from or tour about an hour ago and I felt compelled to write this review immediately because I am so happy.
Now, the tour is a little more expensive than your average tour. Hence, the word average. This tour is exceptional and you get what you pay for. I felt a little spoiled driving in a golf cart by all the other people who were huddled in a group of 20 or more with 1 tour guide and having to walk everywhere. If you want to get the most out of Rome, this is the way to go.
Tomorrow, we will continue our time with DGS and tour the Vatican. We are very excited!
Thank you to Roberta, Miriam, Ivano and Pietro. Pietro, if you read this, you are AWESOME!!
