The service was very friendly and cheerful. Everything seemed very orderly and organized. We came specifically for fish and chips and were not disappointed. The menu for both drinks and food is varied. As for a beer I chose a pint of draught, the Proper. A light beer with a nice light mellow taste it uses American hops, oddly enough. The fish and chips were excellent. As for the fish itself it was flakey, fresh and the breading perfect. It never got soggy. The quality could hit be beat. Also the chips were plump and well prepared and delicious. The meal came with a small side of mushy peas, warm and quite good as well as a tartar sauce and a brown sauce with a curry flavor. All very good. It was a filling meal and most enjoyable. If you want a nice contemporary pub or a very good fish and chips, this is a great place to have a meal.

This is the first pub you encounter on the way down the hill and if drink is all you are interested in then you can probably just stop here. I love St Austell Brewery, but not many of their pubs have a guest (first time I have seen it). This pub had an almost full selection of their beers (even the Black Prince was holding court) and local wench Betty Stogs was available too. Had to go for Proper Job, what with it being one of my five favourite beers ever, but if I'd been able to stay longer I would not have been bored! Lovely feel to the place with a nice garden for the warmer weather. Perfect? Maybe if they get in an exterminator in to fumigate the Stella infestation :)

The views are brilliant and the service was very friendly. The food also did not disappoint. Started with fried calamari, a good size portion and it had a little kick to it. The most impressive dish, though, was my main of mussels. I ordered the large size, as I've never had too many mussels, but this really was a large. Huge portion of mussels, nice sized and meaty ones and the broth was incredible. I have never before felt so stuffed from mussels, well worth it. The only disappointment was the bread nibble. Four pieces of bread for 6 pounds feels excessive, especially compared to the reasonable food prices. All in all, very happy we stopped here and would go back.

We had found this hotel on the internet before our recent trip to Cornwall and all agreed that it…read morelooked absolutely stunning. Alas, when we arrived we felt a little disappointed and I was all set to give them a low review. The bedrooms felt like they had been recently refurbished but the rest of the hotel was pretty tatty, with chipped paint and flakey wallpaper. Doors to cleaning rooms were left open and rubbish was left outside which gave a very poor perception of this hotel. The shower in our bedroom also fluctuated constantly from freezing to scorchio and the door wouldn't shut resulting rapidly in a flooded bathroom. However, the level of customer service in this hotel was exceptional and just proves how simply things like friendliness and helpfulness can turn someone's experience around... The front of house staff were quick to change our room for us when we mentioned the problems with the shower. We were, in fact, moved to a room with a brand-new top-of-the-range shower and breathtaking views of St Michael's Mount from the window. A room that would normally have been a lot more expensive. In fact, all the staff we came into contact with were amazing good at their jobs - from reception, to bar staff, to waiting staff, and in particular the older chap (Anthony) that single-handedly ran the breakfast service. Oh the breakfast!! There was so much choice from full English, to Continental, to smoked salmon and scrambled egg, to poached haddock, and any combination of the above. Nothing was too much trouble and our server never batted an eyelid when my slightly fussy travelling companions made particular demands on how the scrambled egg and sausages should be cooked, as well as asking for extras...! The evening food, although nothing outstanding, was tasty and filling. My one complaint was that there was nowhere in the bar where you could escape the noisy television, which happened to be showing the final of BGT on this evening. We ended up going to bed early just to get away from it! Overall, what could have been a disappointing stay turned into a lovely travel experience and we ended up staying for an extra night.

As such, the range isn't that great, so I settled for a Brain's SA on hand pump. This pub/hotel is located about a hundred meters from Padstow's busy and extremely touristy harbour, and it offers a bit of quiet in this much-loved holiday "spa". Especially nice is the (covered) outside seating area which opens to the narrow road. Staff were nice upon my short visit, and it felt comfy and relaxed there.

I used to enjoy and love this place…read more Being in Cornwall again last week a friend asked me if I wanted to go for a meal and we decided to try Gurnard Head again. We drove up on Monday afternoon 25th Oct to book a table, for Tuesday night. The front window is FULL of Michelin, recommended stickers, and every other possible award or recommendation possible, in fact so many it looks a mess. Is it me? Have I got two heads? No, but they are so rude, unhelpful and would go as far as to say they look at you as if you are so beneath them they do not even want to speak to you. My friend (who is an actor and the friendliest person you could meet) spoke to the bar staff, asking if it was possible to book a table, (so it is not just me) the end result was he said did not want to book after how we were spoken to by the staff. We were told we could ONLY book for 8.30, not, we are sorry that is the only space we have etc as most restaurants would do, we asked to see a menu, and were told no, as it changes every day!! They just seem so unwilling to treat you as a customer more as an inconvenience to them. We asked about eating in the bar, and they said at the bar we said no at a table in the bar, and the barman snapped in the bar at a table same thing, well unless you check it you may end up eating at the bar, there is no need to be so snappy and rude. It is too late to arrive to find you are having a meal actually sitting at the bar What a way to run a business, do the owners know? I wanted to eat and spend money with them, but was driven away by attitude. Why would you spend money in a place that treats you like that? The young blond tall barman we dealt with made us feel we were not welcome, and spoke to us like dirt, we had a coffee and left, have they no idea how to serve customers, do they care? I think not, they seem to have so many reviews that they do not care, I wish I could witness the Michelin reviewers visits, as they must know who they are, as no way on earth is this a friendly place. The bar looked very tatty, I would hope it is called shabby chic, but think it is more just tatty, worn and shabby. On a positive note a young chef came to the bar to check the evenings bookings and he smiled over at us, and a customer passing through asked him if he was the chef and complemented him on the fabulous meal they had just had. My question to the owners is, are you aware how many customers are being driven away by your rude staff, or are the rude staff the owners? We went away and went to a different restaurant, and had a great meal and friendly service. Best to stay away from Gurnard Head, far better and friendlier places to eat in Cornwall.

The Old Custom House is a large, attractive pub & restaurant in Padstow Harbour, part of a chain…read moreand affiliated (as so many in the area) with St. Austell Brewery. The historic building is in perfect shape, and the décor inviting and family-friendly. There are two areas, one close to the bar and a room mostly for dining at the back. Sadly, it offered no dedicated seating in front of the building, which is a shame considering the splendid view. The menu is straightforward and streamlined; during my week in Cornwall I've encountered the very same menu at least five times, at pubs in Padstow, St. Ives and Falmouth. On the upside, you know what you'll get. My pick at The Old Custom House was their rump steak with chips, onion rings, a flat mushroom, and tomato. You can add a prawn skewer for UKP 4, which I did and later regretted, it's not worth the "upgrade". The steak itself arrived medium rare as ordered: average quality meat but decently prepared. Okay for the price. The range of real ales and lagers was good, of course there's a focus on St. Austell ales. I tried different beers and they were all fresh and well-kept. The bar staff were reasonably friendly, but seemed in quite a hurry - not surprising considering the fact that Padstow is a touristy place and that the pub was nearly packed during (late) lunchtime. Queues at the bar (there is a separate till for ordering food) can get longer, and longer. The dish itself arrived within reasonable time. As expected, beer prices are rather elevated at such a place, so expect more than UKP 4 for a pint. All in all it's one of the best options though along the Padstow "harbour front".

The minute that we all arrived numerous staff were on hand to take our coats and ensure that the table area was to our liking, from there our waiter somehow managed to be exceptional and not get a single thing wrong the whole night. Drinks were prompt, food was outstanding and we never had dirty plates or empty cups for long. The seafood pot in the creamy mustard sauce (name fails me now..) was AMAZING, definitely the best meal I have ever had. To top that off there was a Thai mussels starter that was out of this world. A few gentleman at the table had steaks and they were cooked to perfection which is sometimes hit or miss at seafood restaurants. Needless to say, this was perfect for our very special occasion and despite being a bit loud, the staff was very gracious and the surrounding parties were also kind and understanding, one of which sent us over drinks. Such a great experience and I recommend to anyone in Padstow looking for a high class dining experience. Our waiter was from Canada of all places and was OUTSTANDING, so if you get him, you are in very good hands.
