Over time I encountered ongoing problems with scheduling, referrals, and follow-ups. Calls and messages were not returned, even by management. I was hung up on. I was told referrals or authorizations were being handled when they were not, which resulted in a necessary appointment being scheduled late, BY WEEKS. I made multiple attempts to resolve these issues, including reaching out to the manager, Paulette, and to Michelle Pace, but did not receive responses. After repeated attempts to work through these problems, I ultimately transferred my care elsewhere. This review reflects the administrative experience only, not Dr. Nielsen's care, which I appreciated.

She asked a lot of questions about the accident and how I was feeling. She actually seemed like she wanted to know and really cared about my pain and the anxiety I now have when driving. She discussed our plan of action on getting some physical therapy done to help with my recovery. When I left her office almost an hour later I was so happy to have found a doctor in Colorado that I felt comfortable with! I was so excited that before I started the car I had to call my daughter to tell her. I sat there for probably 10 minutes just gushing over how excited I was and told my daughter that I would now be bringing her there as well because she's getting too old to see her Pediatrician anymore (she's 17!). Years ago I had one bad appointment: the doctor got no cells from a screening but they charged me anyway, even though the test was null and void. They also refused to do another test, telling me I had to do it out of pocket if the insurance company refused to pay for another. That was a case of the patient being truly ripped off. This was over 7 years ago, and also I still did not switch doctors, because EVERY other experience was really great. They've done every other test I need perfectly and saved me a lot of expense by being clear and honest about tests I actually needed or did not need. They've partnered with me to really look after my health. These days as a patient you have to pay attention to how you're being treated by insurance companies and labs and medical practitioners, and you have to go to bat for yourself. Since the retirement of Dr. Karen Kelly-Hemler and the subsequent take over by Optum, which is owned by United Health Care, patient care, customer service and follow up have all changed drastically. First of all, it is a revolving door of doctors, PA's, nurse practitioners, MA's, managers and front office staff since I started going there. Dr. Kelly used to genuinely care about her patients and demonstrated that each time I saw her, but now it's only about how much money the doctors and managers can squeeze out of each person who comes through the door. I absolutely dread when I need a prescription refilled because it can take weeks for the staff to reply to the pharmacy and approve the prescription especially if there is an issue with insurance, and that's if they don't require me to come in for an office visit first. I have run out of medication because insurance won't let me fill it too early or the office does not see running out of medication as a priority. When I've complained to the receptionist at the front desk they tell me that they are so busy and understaffed that they can't get to medication requests sometimes for several days or weeks, and no one sees anything wrong with this. I can just see the roll of the eyes from the staff when I ask how long something is going to take, as if I'm being unreasonable. Also, I recently had an issue with my insurance not being accepted and the doctor told me she had many patients that pay of out pocket but she took this as an opportunity to charge me $300 for a 10 minute appointment - surprise! The front desk receptionist told me that they don't usually take patients who don't have insurance that they accept and that I should go somewhere else that accepts my insurance. Changing primary doctors can be very time consuming but in this case I think that's the best advice I've heard.

I've never been kept waiting more than a few minutes past my scheduled appt time and have never felt like I was rushed or didn't have time to ask any questions I had. She in fact spent at least an extra 45 minutes with me at one recent visit - I was much sicker than I realized and she recognized right away that I needed to be transferred to the ER. She made all the necessary calls, and kept an eye on my condition until the paramedics arrived. She is prepared to deal with urgent problems like the one I was having but also takes the time to go thru everything health-related at least every year and makes sure that I'm up to date on my vaccines, etc. I feel very lucky to have found such a competent and empathetic medical provider.

I visited during posted urgent-care hours after a fall. CommonSpirit's public-facing website describes urgent-care pricing during specific hours and states that patients will be informed whether their treatment or testing is being billed at an emergency or urgent-care level. That did not happen during my visit. After the visit, I received a CommonSpirit facility bill totaling $38,591.97 in gross charges -- roughly $31,999.44 of which was for a single CT scan. For context, a brand-new CT scanner costs around $100,000. My concern isn't with the clinicians, who were professional. My concern is with the disclosure practices of the facility itself. Don't assume an organization has your best interest in mind simply because of its marketing or its religious and mission-driven branding. Ask explicitly, before any test or treatment, whether you're being billed at the emergency or urgent-care level -- and get the answer in writing if you can.
