The location is also wonderful: just 10-15 minutes outside of Ann Arbor and close enough to a major airport to make travel easy for out-of-town guests. My now-husband and I would not have had our wedding anywhere else. Our wedding day truly felt like a dream, and we could not be more grateful.

The main dinner took place in a large tent, which kept the light rain off us but still let us enjoy the cool evening breezes. Staff at the bar were very friendly and accommodating. After dinner the rain had stopped and some went up to the barn to dance, others went to chill in a small shed very comfortably appointed with cushy couches and chairs; we hit the boogie barn for another glass of wine, then strolled down to the campfire on the shore of the small pond. A waterside gazebo was nearby if you wanted some shelter. My main quibble came as we were walking out. There are no lights in the parking area and it was a little difficult to find the row we'd parked in. As well lit as the area around the buildings was, couldn't one light be put in the parking area? Still, a very pleasant night, and I'd be happy to return.

Kayla took the few ideas that I tossed her way and turned them in to an absolute dream- it was like I handed her a seed, and she turned it in to the most beautiful garden I'd ever seen. I was initially reluctant to use a wedding/event planner for several reasons - wanting to save money, being fairly crafty/creative myself and having confidence in handling on my own details in pursuing something less "traditional", and being pretty resourceful. Shortly into the planning process, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought. I then met Mandi Buckland of Element Design. What sealed the deal was her calm energy and diversity in events she's worked on (weddings, parties, festivals, including "green" fests/events). She was great in identifying several unique wedding location options in Southwest and Southern MI, including a fabulous barn, a garden, and a super cool lodge (we ended up at a mansion in Holland). When I asked her to design the invitations with a "modern art nouveau theme" using a peacock to match the theme of a mansion built in the early 1900s (not easy!) - she provided several fabulous sample designs within a short period of time. Our final invitations were really unique and fun! After our invites went out, I received an unexpected amount of of great feedback ("I love your invitations!" "They are so unique," etc.) and I could tell they made people look forward to the wedding. I felt like Mandi figured out my sense of my style quickly, and she was able to identify options that fit that were creative, cost-conscious (extra plus) and didn't compromise on quality. At the same time she was working with me, she was helping a friend design invitations for a wedding at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, so her range of work can be simple, arty/less traditional, to more traditional/upscale. Pretty impressive! Mandi is professional, efficient, super creative, and I would recommend her to anyone in Chicago, Detroit (or anywhere in between the two cities in Michigan or Illinois) who is planning a wedding in Southwest or Southern Michigan!

Their services came highly recommended, stating they had a ton of experience and were all-around nice guys. I was already on the fence about having a DJ as it was. We were having an afternoon wedding and were trying to keep costs low. The reception was only 3.5 hours long... I needed a good price in order to actually book someone. I already had a few quotes and wasn't impressed with any of the prices, so what did I have to lose? I went to their website to do some research and gave them a call. I got Brett, who was incredibly friendly over the phone. He totally understood our situation about having a DJ but gave us hope that there's good DJs out there willing to give a good price on a Sunday wedding. We met him at a local Starbucks to sign the agreement. He went over every section of the contract in detail so we completely understood what he was responsible for and what we were responsible for. And he was incredibly friendly. His personality type gets along with everyone. I love people like that. He accepted payment through Paypal, which was incredibly convenient for us. His website was really intuitive, with detailed forms for us to fill out with details about the ceremony, the timeline of the reception and even a music form so we could choose what songs we wanted him to play. On one of the forms, I made it clear what music I didn't want to hear and he totally stuck with that at the reception. One thing I totally appreciated was how Brett was willing to do the outdoor music preceding the ceremony for no extra charge. We were having an extremely short ceremony, so I just wanted music to lead us down the aisle. We offered to pay extra but he said it wasn't a big deal. How sweet is that? Up until the day of the wedding, Brett stayed in perfect contact with me. He even called me the day of the wedding to make sure I was staying calm (rain on my wedding day when the ceremony was supposed to be outside... of course I wasn't calm.) But it was a nice gesture. The ceremony was moved inside and Brett was awesome with the change of plans. He still played our processional music, jazzy music during dinner and finally dance music after dinner was served. One detail we totally loved was that Brett wore a pink and purple tie so he matched our wedding colors! Small detail that made a big difference. Everyone told me they loved our DJ. Some people even thought he was a personal friend of ours because he was so friendly and personable while on the mic. He played the exact music that I wanted to hear at my reception... classic rock with current dance hits mixed in. It's like he knew me my whole life with the way he nailed my musical preferences. He did perfect. I couldn't say enough nice things about MotorCityHDJ. They turned us from an "on the fence" couple to "we totally needed a DJ" couple.

The booking process was super smooth; we got to chat with her via Skype (as we were out of state) and work through all the little details. She really listened to what we were hoping to get out of the experience and worked with us to create a plan that fit us. We checked in with her in person a few days before the wedding to make sure all the details were set, timings were correct and to go over paper choices. I love speaking with Amanda because she is so professional and obviously a top notch photographer - but talking with her just puts you at ease.
