I got Jesse, my English cream golden retriever, when he was 6 months old. He had little to no training or socialization. Alex and Jack pretty much saved our dog's life. I cannot say enough great things about Dream Dog K9 Academy, their approach and, most importantly, their results. It's the best investment we've ever made. We rescued Cleo (a 1 year old Terrier mix) from a shelter in late 2019. She was extremely skittish, nervous and slow to warm up to us. We couldn't even get her to go on walks initially. Once we were able to get her out of the house, we quickly realized she had issues with reactivity. She would lunge, bark and snarl at other dogs, even from across the street or park. We worked with our vet to put her on medication and tried a treat-based training program. We didn't make much progress with this method and by the end of training they suggested we just "try to avoid other dogs." That said, she still had a long way to go and after several lessons it became clear that she might benefit from more intensive board and train. We sent her to Alex and Jack and the first week was really tough. She was a hard case and the improvement they typically see in the first few days took Cleo a lot longer to grasp. But it finally clicked for her and we saw something we'd never seen before - a HAPPY dog who didn't act like she was constantly in a war zone. She came home from board and train a different dog and a month later she's still improving every day. We're really working on refining her behavior now but she can do things I didn't even dream possible 3 months ago - she hikes off leash (on her e-collar) and LOVES it, she can walk by other dogs on a narrow trail with no reaction, she even plays with other dogs (and if she gets a little too excited with them, she takes their social cues and backs off). THIS is the dog I wanted and I'm so grateful to Jack and Alex for helping her get here. Alex and Jack are truly amazing. They know so much about dog psychology and behavior and not only are they naturals with dogs, they are also really good instructors. I took notes after our sessions and this training is really a class for dog parents as much as for the dog. I have been working with Alex for about 6 months to help me deal with my very willful Biewer Terrier puppy. The biggest thing I have learned from Alex is that training is about the changing our human behavior and being consistent rather than actually training the dog. Once you train the human the dog follows! She has taught me to set expectations and to ensure that I am constantly following through with them to set boundaries and let my puppy know I am the boss. My puppy has gone from being unruly to listening and being able to be off leash at 9 months old. This continues to be a process and I meet periodically with Alex help reinforce my behavior with my puppy Tellie. Alex and her training literally saved my marriage. My husband hated the puppy because she was so bad and now he has fallen in love with her since she behaves. Specifically, when people mention how well-behaved Willow is. I adopted Willow when she was 8 weeks old and right off the bat, I knew she was going to be a handful. With a mix of shepherd, heeler, collie and who knows what else, her energy level and desire for control was apparent right away. I WISH I COULD RANK ALEX AND JACK HIGHER THAN 5 Our dog Hobbes is a (roughly) 2-yr old pit mix that was picked up from a high-kill shelter in NM. He was found nosing through trash on the street, abandoned, before being taken to the shelter. When we adopted him, Hobbes was not a dog, but a wild animal. He had no sense of right/ wrong, how to react in social situations with both dogs and people (Hobbes would respond aggressively when another dog would come at him aggressively) and could not be walked on a leash without the possibility of getting your arm pulled out of its socket. My boyfriend and I were heartbroken by his story and really wanted to turn him into the dog we knew he could be and avoid perpetuating the stereotypes associated with pit bull breeds. The first time Jack came to our house, I remember so vividly. We had our main house door open and the screen door was preventing the dogs from leaving the house. Before I even knew what Jack's name was, he was already telling us everything that was going wrong / what we weren't enforcing but should be. These two don't mess around. Fast forward 3.5 months, I couldn't describe a more well-behaved dog. Hobbes listens immediately, avoids interactions with dogs that are not well behaved, walks on a leash heeling at our side, runs next to our bicycle at a perfect distance from the bike, can be off-leash with no concern and is all-round happier because he now has the DESIRE to be a good dog. We actually get stopped almost daily at our local brewery by patrons who see Hobbes' behavior compared to the other dogs, asking us what we did to make him who he is. Each week, we went through issues we were having at the house and different behaviors we noticed when trying to implement structure. The most essential part of their training and why any dog has the chance to be successful is how customized their training is. You describe the negative behavior and they instantly have a solution. One-on-one you develop your ability to be a pack leader, deepen the bond you have with your dog and increase the level of respect your dog has for you. Here's what you need to know going into these trainings. --This is WORK. The more you put into it and the higher the standards you have for your household, the better the outcome will be. Consistency is key. --Alex and Jack give you the tools, but it is up to you to practice. --They offer a boot camp option where once you complete your weekly trainings, they take your dog daily for 1 or 2 weeks to hone in on the skills you have implemented. We did this with Hobbes so he could practice what he learned in a pack of dogs. During these days, they text you updates on behavior and awesome pictures of all the activities. They will also bring your dog to places you plan to frequent so your dog can see rules implemented in those environments. --The training sessions are 75% training you 25% training your dog. You might get frustrated or not think there is a light at the end of the tunnel but rest assured, there is. I cannot thank Alex and Jack enough for providing the tools to make Hobbes what he is today and for giving me the self-confidence to be a better dog owner. If you know anything about the German Shepherd breed you know that they are incredibly smart, loyal, hardworking dogs with a drive that wants goes 100% at all times, in all facets of their life. Unfortunately, I used these traits as an excuse to let Chief run wild or "do as he pleased" as a puppy and adolescent. I figured that if I can teach him the basics of sit, lay down, and come everything would turn out great and Chief would develop more manners and calm down with age. Boy was I wrong. At nearly 1.5 years of age Chiefs behavior got to the point where it was hard to sit/lay down in my own house peacefully as he would want to bump his nose into every person, jump on the couch, whine at the door to go out, or consistently drop a toy (or 3) in your lap until we played. I could not take him in the car due to his spastic behavior and over excitement when we came to any destination, especially the park. Even worse, it was hard for friends to come over (with or without their dogs) as he would demand attention (barking, whining, etc) and typically play too hard with other dogs as he is roughly 90 pounds of solid muscle. After a road trip to and from Montana with my girlfriend, chiefs behavior sent me to a breaking point. For nearly 6-8 hours (each way) chief whined, barked, and did everything but sit still for and relax. This left me feeling awful, confused, and really unsure how I could go on any longer with such an intense and excited dog. This trip lead me to do my research on local dog trainers in the Boulder area. After talking/emailing a few folks and training services I quickly realized that K9 Dream Dog Academy (K9DDA hereafter) was going to be my trainer. From the initial phone conversation I knew this would be different as Alex was quick to tell me that K9DDA does their work without treats and without harness collars. Their focus is on the dogs behavior rather than training a dog to do XYZ. The reason being that for many dogs, especially working dogs, the treats simply elevate the dogs energy and excitement in order to keep performing (for the treats) and not for their handler. In terms of the harness, the harness can act as a crutch and does not allow a dog and their owner to properly communicate. After the phone consultation, I set up an in person meeting with Jack and Chief. As expected, Chief was incredibly excited about a new person being in the house and acted as a "crazy dog" for nearly the entire consultation session and didn't sit still one time. Jack told me that it would take a ton of commitment and hard work but we would start back from ground zero and get chief to respect me as his owner. What really sold me is that Jack said that some german shepherds have jobs in the military/police forces, some are used only for the sport of Shutzhund and that Chiefs only "job" will be to be a perfect dog. German shepherds have incredibly high standards in which they live by, so as an owner if you meet those standards with hard work, proper communication and care they will deliver exactly how you want them to. Nearly 6 training sessions later and I honestly cannot believe the progress Chief (and I) have made in terms of proper communication, manners , riding in the car, around other dogs and guest. It is undeniably the best choice I could have made to save my relationship with my dog (and my girlfriend). The way Jack is able to educate me on my verbal and nonverbal communication with Chief has been incredibly eye opening. We worked the first few classes in my house and then transitioned to high traffic areas like Pearl Street and various TrailHeads around town. Now that our first 6 training sessions have ended, we are continuing to work on "off leash" training. In this short time i no longer have to worry about chief pulling me on walks, chasing after a dog, or any other bad behaviors that he may have been conditioned to previously. In mid January I will be traveling to Thailand and Chief will be boarding with Jack at his house to really help take my dog to "the next level". read more

I am so grateful we hired Alex and Jack to help us train our 5 year old schnauzer. I knew nothing about dogs and both Alex and Jack were amazingly helpful from the first phone call and through all the training sessions. They have a solid knowledge about dog behavior and training and given that I didn't they took the time needed in order to make sure I felt confident in the new training. One afternoon I was struggling with a certain technique and Jack was able to change the instruction until I got it and we could see results with our dog. Jack was great checking in between sessions, and followed up on last session before starting a new technique or topic. I rescued a puppy mill breeding dog several months ago. As a VETERINARIAN with 18 years experience and an owner of other herding breeds I thought I could handle this task, with just patience and love. I was sooo wrong. I hired Jack to assist me in understanding Abby, the Australian shepherd. I can only say that I have met and recommended many dog trainers in my years as a vet, but NEVER have I met a person who entirely understands dog behavior, and therefore had easy and concrete plans for our moving forward. Step by step he has improved our relationship, and improved Abby's trust in the world. She was an extremely anxious and a potentially aggressive dog if her intentions are not understood and addressed. Sadly, I know and have personally had to euthanize several dogs like her in the past due to aggression and liability issues, that were never addressed correctly. Jack has taught me through diligently working on our relationship that stopping any aggression before it takes place is possible, and that I can get her to a peaceful place. Probably for the first time in Abby's life! I am so happy for Abby and eternally grateful to Jack for his patient teaching and reinforcing both of our good behaviors. Jack and Dream Dog K9 Academy are absolutely fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone, whether your dog is already well-behaved or is a problem child. Jack has a very strong understanding of how dogs communicate and makes it look effortless as he teaches you how to speak dog language. He focuses on strengthening the bond between you and your dog, which improves obedience. I signed up for lessons to improve off-leash recall and have not been disappointed. On one training hike we went on I had commented about how I was surprised that Rambo was not paying any attention to the other dogs in the area. Jack said it was because I had become more interesting to Rambo by working to develop our relationship. Rambo now has better recall, is more engaged with me, is more confident when playing with other dogs, is much better at running and wrestling with me, barks less when "guarding" his house, doesn't rush the door when someone knocks, will sit and wait patiently to get his leash put on to go outside, and can ride alongside me on the bike and will stop on command when I need to slow down. Rambo was a loving, well-behaved dog before we started working with Jack, but he's even better now and it's been worth every second!! read more
