Pho Vietnam - Spring rolls and peanut dipping sauce

We thought we would try out a new pho restaurant, and while the flavors of our meal were very good,…read morewe're not sure that we would return. We did enjoy the shrimp, spring rolls, but were slightly disappointed that the peanut sauce was very watery. The menu had a good variety, but most of the dishes involved pork, very few involved chicken. Tofu dishes were also an option. The chicken pad Thai was very tasty; rather than cooking the dish to a persons heat specification, they just provide extra chili powder on the plate if you wanted to make it spicier. The main reason for the low review would be the cleanliness of the restaurant. On the table were a variety of spices and sauces in various containers, but they didn't look like they had been cleaned or changed in several uses, so we did not use or investigate to know exactly what things were.

If you're looking for truly authentic Vietnamese and Lao food, this is hands-down the spot. If you've been here in the past and didn't have the best experience, you NEED to come back. The flavors are bold, traditional, and rooted in real Southeast Asian cuisine--nothing watered down. Our top go tos included: * Pho * Lao Pho * Bánh Mì * Thum (Lao style) * Kao Piek * Lao Sausage Every single dish was a hit--fresh, flavorful, and made with care. You can taste the authenticity in every bite. I'm already excited to come back and try even more from the menu. This is the kind of place you tell your friends about. Highly recommend. Side note - Me and my family have eaten here over two handful of times and I've never had any issues with seeing any bugs rodents or odor... So it surprises me that these other people leaving these reviews have had these types of encounters... Because I would never eat an establishment like that. I trust pho Vietnam and that's why I eat here.

A cozy, efficient dining area. Minimal decor which is attractive. It doesn't overwhelm the room…read more Good idea! Invited to join a couple from our HOA, we were enthused to further our love for Thai cuisine. This place exceeded our expectations. We had a very kind server. Her English skills were minimal, but we easily made do with universal signs for numbers and pointing to the two billing parties seated at our table of four. I ordered the Sesame Chicken. BEAUTIFULLY served - - pleasing to the eye and the palate. No photos - sorry - but I leave that talent to others. It was a VERY generous serving. I am not exaggerating when I say I left VERY SATISFIED with eating a fourth or a third of the dish. Looking forward to enjoying my leftovers today and/or tomorrow. My husband ordered the Chicken Fried Rice. Our server added a plate of their hottest sauce - four thimble sized containers. My husband - an aficionado of all things "flavorful" enjoyed THREE containers on his food. HA! HA! As a footnote - - do yourself a favor. Order the Rangoon. NEVER have I EVER seen such a lovely serving! Perfectly fried with a delightful sauce. Bravo to the cooks and the servers! We will DEFINITELY return!

Last fall I had an amazing Papaya Salad at a food court in St. Paul at The Hmong Village mall. I…read morehave been craving it ever since and for my birthday lunch this week I drove across the metro to this Lao restaurant to satisfy my craving. Khop Jai Der is a very small place with tables crowded together that made it difficult to navigate with my current and temporary situation of using crutches. I ordered the Papaya Salad and asked for moderate spice level. What I received looked nothing like my last fantastic salad. Very little sauce, a skimpy amount of papaya, pieces of cabbage that were way too large and a spice level that was way over-board. The female that brought my dish ignored me for the rest of my lunch even though she was sitting at the table next to me talking to her friends. I never got a water refill that I desperately needed and had to get up and maneuver my way to the restroom for napkins after deleting the two at the table because of severe sinus drain. I finally took 70% of my meal to the register and asked for a to-go box. I showed my Hmong co-worker the next day and he agreed that this was not the place to get what I craved. He brought me a homemade bowl of the greatest papaya salad for my lunch today so I finally did find redemption, but it wasn't from KJD. With an almost inedible $20+ lunch, inadequate and dismissive service while my digestive tract was on fire and a claustrophobic environment, I can't find a reason to recommend this place. The biggest let down that I've had in a very long time.

The space inside is quite small, just a few tables but the server was really great about checking in with our party from time to time. They do seem to do quite a few carry orders as well. We tried the papaya salad, Lao sausage, Khop Jai der fried rice, combo crispy pork and bbq, and khao poon. I wasn't the biggest fan of the papaya salad but the fried rice was incredible, so delicious and to be honest I'm not sure how they got it so moist and flavorful. The khao poon was also phenomenal and was a real hit at our table for it's rich flavor profile. Fun spot to try out in OP
