This is a famous Heuriger (even Bill Clinton was here) so surprised to see no reviews. Not too…read moremention it's super touristy in the area. A Heuriger is a wine cellar/food tavern whereby most places make their own wine and feature a buffet of tasty homegrown Austrian good. It's in the Grindzing area which is the gateway to the real lush wine country and about a 30 tram ride from center city. You go in and sit wherever- if you want something from the buffet , you Get it yourself, pay then sit. Bf and I came Friday at 9ish where there was a big tour group dining with us and thus there was folk music playing everywhere (mostly singing, dancing and accordion playing). From the buffet, we had the casserole noodle dish of ham and cheese prepared Au gratin. Very rich and tasty - they're supposed to charge you by weight. We also ordered things from the a la carte menu- I had their award winning Chardonnay which was crisp, not too dry and not too sweet. Bf had a schapps, or grappa, and the house red which was a Merlot. We shared the mixed hot and mixed cold plate. The cold plate had Austrian cold cuts - ham, speck, salami, and cheeses such as a native Swiss and Gouda I think. Also came with cornicorn pickles and the cheesy, horseradish spread which you see everywhere. They give you loads of spelt or sourdough bread which is different than ours - spongier. The hot plate had a tasty hot dog (which they score to look like a small squid ), ham steak, Roasted pork, crispy and tart sauerkraut. Service was again what you make of it - chasing down people for things and to pay. The meal came to 30 euros which was inexpensive for what we got and a fun atmosphere. I'm sure if you came on a tour they would charge double the price. Definitely make it out to these Heuriger and enjoy the history of good food and wine (which you can buy).

How disappointing! We tried this Heuriger in Grinzing on a cold wet January day and had hoped for a…read morewarm welcome and some good food. The experience was completely different and we were glad to pay and leave with our meal hardly touched. The restaurant was totally empty (and we can understan why). Staff were unfriendly to the point of rudeness. We were not allowed to choose our salad from the buffet selection and were told what we would be given and that there was no chance of us having anything different. My 'fried fish' was 2 large rectangular fish fingers, oozing with oil/fat, the potatoes accompanying them were cold and greasy and tasteless. We have eaten many meals in other Heurige (especially in Sooss) and have never had such a poor experience. On being asked why we were leaving so soon, we said that the food had not tasted good. The waitress said she was having the fish and she thought it was fine. End of story!
