DP Dough is a college town staple. My spouse and I picked up food from the IC location for the first time in July. A perfect time to try the place, as campus is nice and quiet. I ordered online via their website (easy peasy). 20 or so minutes later we arrived at the restaurant as staff was finishing the order. I love calzones and didn't know what to expect. I'm happy to report that my calzone, 'The Safety Zone,' was very, very good. I think my standards were lower because DPD is a franchise. My S.O. ordered a 'zone that included bbq pork and mac 'n cheese and stated that it was delicious, too. (This item may be unique to Iowa City, as I don't see it on the regular DP menu.) This is a nice place to patronize maybe once a year. We spent around $25 + tip, so the equivalent of spending what we would have at Jimmy John's. I feel a little better about spending $25 on large calzones than I do sandwiches. I'd come back to try something else, including the Tots and Stix. Lots of vegetarian options. Friendly staff. No frills, something for everyone and reasonably priced. (There are a TON of calzone options but you can make your own, as well.) I needed breadsticks on a random Tuesday. I got a free a BBQ chicken calzone, first calzone I'd ever tried. It took around 10 minutes to make, and I was the only one there. They have long communal tables for dining, not exactly the best style. The BBQ sauce and cheese in the calzone were delicious, but the dough exterior was almost tasteless. The crust was hard-to-chew and bland, so I just threw it out. In one meal, I only ate half of a calzone. I have been wanting to visit this place for some time now and I finally had the opportunity (unfortunately) because I opted against my first choice. I was less than impressed but there were some upsides. So please read on. I did have difficulties finding the place because it appears to be in the middle of a black hole for cell service. Sorry Yelp, you have never let me down but this was not your fault. I did manage it find it based on vague memories of where I thought it was located. I dropped a quarter into the parking meter (Ya1 I get 10 minutes!) and went inside. The place was clean and well lit with the full wall windows in the front and room for 4 -5 groups of people to sit at large tables (yep time to make friends). There were several choices from the Calzones to sticks and wings and desert. I opted for a traditional Italian calzone and substituted the marinara dipping sauce with Garlic Butter (watch out coworkers, no close room meetings for me this afternoon!). They told me it would be about 20 minutes since there were a couple ahead of me. It turned out to only be 15 minutes, Bonus! The calzone looked well done since it was a darker brown but the crust was actually perfect, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The helping size was very nice and did fill me up for the price. The other nice feature was the cheese that was very flavorful, tasty and there was plenty, no skimping here folks! Besides for those features it was just a plain calzone it really did not stand out for me, oh and did I mention that they did not charge me extra for the grease on the bottom. It was fun to carry the neat little box around making me feel like a giant with a pizza but besides for that feeling of enormousness I don't think I will be going back. Came to visit my daughter at college in Iowa , go Hawkeyes , and she wanted to take me for some calzones. Was hesitant at first cause chicago has the best pizza out there !! Have to admit it was pretty damn good . I got the Hawkeye zone and she got the Mac daddy zone and the cookie box . Both were really good !! Before I left going back home I stopped bye to pick up some up . That's how much I liked them . So if your ever hear to see your kid or just in town check out this little gem, it's worth it !! He walked up to the door of the store & they brought the food right outside for us. We appreciate the limited contact & friendliness. As for the food, it was alright. The ranch was to die for. I have called several times to the Iowa city DP dough and they don't even give me a chance to talk and put me on hold until they clearly close. I called at 1:15 to pick up a calzone and they are listed to close at 2. If they stopped serving even at 1 I would have no issue but the putting customers on hold is not a good look. They lost my business doing this. Just tell me you're closed. I waited on hold twice now two separate nights for over 30 minutes. It's clear they wait until I just give up. Wasted my time and wouldn't even let me speak. So rude and distasteful. I was ecstatic when a DP Dough opened up in Iowa City about a year ago. Their service and food quality is superb and affordable. They offer a wide variety of inexpensive calzones, often giving away free menu items and also utilizing a $5 "zone of the day" deal. On top of affordability, they provide free delivery for any amount of food, and the delivery times are fairly short. It's refreshing to see a newer calzone place with solid brand recognition in a city heavily saturated with traditional pizza places. My only recommendation would be introducing some type of reward punch card similar to Oasis and Which Wich. read more

I was here last year for a conference and happened to read about this place. I loved it! Unfortunately, this year we were out of delivery range, so I had to go pick it up. My whole family came this year and we ordered this for our first night meal after a long day of traveling. The food is AMAZING. Just the right amount of flavor for us! The portions per person were decent sized. We all ordered our own calzones, and added stix and bacon cheesy tots for our sides. We loved the taste of the dough and the ingredients tasted fresh. Flavor wasn't overpowering. Just all around good meal. It was quick and easy and reasonably priced. We did happen to order on a night where the calzones were 2 for $10. We will probably be back every year for awhile, and I'm going to make it a point to stop here. The only reason for the 4 instead of a 5 is because of the delivery area. I've only ever utilized delivery but every time things have been excellent! From calling me to make sure I knew they were headed my way from everything being perfect in my order the delivery experience has been wonderful! I used to order all the time when I worked overnight shifts and they would deliver right to my job for my midnight snack/boost. What I usually do is order 2 calzones at a time so I can munch on both and then have the leftovers through the next couple days but of course, that's usually because I can't pick just one.
