I went in just to get lined up/cleaned up for an event. When I got back to my car, I almost cried cause it was so bad. My hairline was in the front was pushed back and my sides were boxy and sharp even though the hairline was round. The hairline she messed up wasn't even cleanly cut; I was expecting it to be cleaned up with a straight edge but she just used a machine and it still looked unclean. Might've had better luck doing it myself. There might be better barbers there but I wouldn't try my luck there ever again. Look for an ethnic barbershop. Posted a picture for context. read more

Ever since getting out of the military I struggled with finding a great place to get my hair cut. When I found Jay at the Downtown Barber Shop I knew this would be my go to place for as long as I was in Lawrence. I am pretty particular with my hair and my son's hair, so this is the place for us. I will warn some of you that the line can be pretty long sometimes, but they are well worth the wait! All of the Barbers are professional, and make you feel like you are part of Downtown family! I came to get a haircut on 08/16/22 and left wishing I had never come. I showed a photo of myself with the haircut I wanted which I had gotten from a barber in another city. I asked for the same exact haircut, and got something far from what I had requested. The barber said I should've told them to leave the back longer since I had a cowlick... The photo showed my hair clearly longer in the exact location she said I should've mentioned to leave longer. I've been coming to this barber for over 20 years, I even got my first haircut here. I have been taking my 4 sons to the Downtown Barber Shop for 15 years. The barbers are great. My youngest son has autism and they are really good with him. He's able to go in by himself most of the time lately. I know he's in good hands. I highly recommend this shop. read more

I just got my hair done here, lines weren't straight and my hair is completely uneven. Two employees were particularly rude. I believe his name is Jay and a bigger woman next him (don't know her name) Jay cut my hair and the woman was making rude comments under her breath to another customer about the particular haircut I was getting. I am a person of color and I was treated significantly different from others right from the moment I walked into the door. I wasn't acknowledged and comments were also being made about a previous customer which were inappropriate. I don't recommend going if you're ethnic. read more

I've been going to Downtown Barbershop since I moved to Lawrence about three years ago. They offer a great atmosphere, great price, and great haircuts (with one exception see below). Agreed with other commenters about the blonde woman (named Jamie?): I didn't like my first haircut from her but I figured, "Shame on me. I should have been more specific." She has cut my hair twice since then. Each time I convinced myself it'd be okay, but being more specific didn't make it any better (she obviously didn't listen to me). Besides her, though, everyone else is GREAT. read more

I got a haircut on 7-22-15 at Downtown Barber by Jess. I discovered on my e receipt that I was charged a tip as well as an extra amount for the cut. I paid cash for the tip and supplied a discount card for the cut. I've had my haircut at this location for years, and never had any complaints or issues up until now. read more

Great haircuts, friendly staff, good prices. However, they are only open 12-5 on the weekend, which is their busiest time. Walked in at 12:01 to find out that they had opened early and the store was full of customers. The worst part is that, this being one of their busiest days, only half of the shop was open and there were only TWO barbers working. TWO! Not smart business, but quality nonetheless. read more

Had one of my worst haircuts of my life by a girl with blonde hair. Don't remember her name but she cut the tops of my ears pretty bad with a razor and said "it happened again" to the barber working next to her. It was still bleeding when I got home! She proceeded to ask me repeatedly throughout if it looks good and when I would say yes, she would say are you sure? which made me have no confidence in her. I had to get it fixed the next day because of how uneven it was. Very uncommon for usually a decent haircut place. read more

This place sucks. Horrible customer service. I took my friend in today to get a hair cut and right when I walked in the building and saw that their was a military discount and it was for nine dollars. I said to myself, hey I can save my friend two dollars. So, I went to the lady and showed her my military ID and I saw that she had a bad attitude with me. Not sure if it was the color of my skin or what. They just seem all rude. I would inform everyone of this. If you are into customer service, this is not the place to go. Onto my story again, after my friend got done getting his hair cut, the lady automatically turns to me and says with an attitude and says "for next time, you need to be active military!!". I just said OK and looked back at the sign and saw nothing that said active or dependents. But hey I'm sorry, my dad is in Afghanistan protecting all of you guys and you tell a simple customer that he can't get two dollars off of hair cut. I thought that to myself and stuck up for myself and said it doesn't say active or anything. The guy or the owner automatically gets mad and starts saying stuff in a very rude manner and says "ill fix it!!" he gave me a very bad look. I hope that dude sees this. You are running a very bad business by the way you fricken jerk off. My dad is in another country protecting all of us, including you and you can't simply give his son a two dollar discount.
