It started off with good customer service, and they served me as a walk-in. Then the old man cut my hair and it was awful. He was very mad at listening to what I wanted, he refused to have any sort of conversation and was rude and short, he only cared about getting a tip at the end, and overall cut my hair very poorly. Short on the sides, long on the top. Malcolm is my Barber. Malcolm works at Amyx. Amyx is an old school Barber Shop in Lawrence, and Malcolm works there. Malcolm has given me a perfect haircut (perfect for me) consistently for the past year an a half. Every 6 weeks, to be exact, I walk into a barbershop that looks straight out of a Tom Waits song, sit in a chair that's probably cradled the rear-ends of some of Douglas County's Most Knowing Asses, and get that perfect haircut, guaranteed. I look forward to that haircut like I look forward to a good meal of a steak and a shot and a potato and a piece of pie and a strong cup of coffee. I look forward to going into Amyx like I look forward to putting on some old blues or riding in an old Ford Falcon. It's a validation that all the great, old, solid stuff is still there, right on the main street of your town, just waiting for you to appreciate it for what it is: a craft, a history, a tradition that was good enough for grand-dad, so it's good enough for me. It's always great when you walk in to try and get your haircut and the guy, maybe Amyx himself, acts like he doesn't have time for you yet nobody is even in the shop for 30 minutes as I sat out front. A guy he "hires to do chores" (old guy on a scooter) saw me, approached me and said that he had lied to me, he just did not want to cut my hair because I was a new client and not loyal to him. read more

Friendly, available and they seem to do the business. That said, not fantastic and of course not consistent between barbers. No insurance sufficient to allow use of the straight razor, although there is at least one other barber nearby that will. Perfectly adequate, but its nowhere near barbershop love. A classic barber shop with a great crew to make you look good. The have the old school chairs and set up with magazines, sports on TV, and a shop full of people from age 1 - 91. I have been going here for years and have my hair cut by Mike or Malcolm for $8. All I can say is wow... I went to school here back in the day, and came back to visit my brother. I couldn't get a haircut before I left home, so I had to get one here. My brother recommended this place to me, cause he said they were good, but boy was he wrong. The barber, don't know his name, he didn't really say a word to me other than a few scoffs, a bigger guy, with grey hair. It was honestly probably one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I had to go to Supercuts the next day to get the whole thing fixed, she was shocked how bad it was. I'm just lucky my brother lent me his car, and haircuts are so cheap in this town. If you want a buzzed head for $9, I'm sure this place will do fine, but other than that, I would avoid. read more

I have been coming here since I was a Freshman in College. Its a very simple place, an old fashioned barber shop, where the barbers know everyone by name. It is a pretty popular place to go, so it can get a bit busy even if they have all 5 chairs going. Its worth it though, no matter who I have cutting my hair, they do an awesome job. Really great price! its only 8.50 for my military cut. If you go, see if you can get Malcolm or Joe. Both are awesome at the at of cutting hair. Its right on mass, so finding parking is another issue. There is a parking garage on the next block, so you can always find a spot there and make the quick walk down mass to AMyx. read more

Walked into the barber shop, was welcomed with warmth. But giving a warm welcome does not mean you have the skill to cut hair. I was tired I driving an hour to get a quality haircut so I decide to explore and shops nearby and somehow found that this shop had great reviews so decided to give it a shot. So I showed a picture of MYSELF of a buzz cut I had previously, and yes I do realize it's hard to replicate a haircuts another barber gave me, although the barber that was cutting my hair seemed confident in doing it. In the end he didn't even give a a buzz cut and was reluctant to do it ending up leaving 2 inches of hair up top and making stupid excuses about my hair type even though I know my hair type pretty well. Upon further review after I showered I looked in the mirror and everything was off, and I mean EVERYTHING. If he didn't know how to do the cut he should have honest and said he didn't know, now I'm $15 down and my hair looks like a giant turd. I honestly don't think he knew how to give a haircut period. Personally, Joe is my favorite. Always does a great job. He's quick, efficient, and never makes me small talk. Perfect haircut everytime even though I ask for more than just buzzing or trimming. He may not say much, but he sure knows how to cut hair. And the cost as much as going any other place without the awkward forced chatting and the subpar cut. My go to for haircuts. read more

MALCOLM ROCKS! When we went to Kansas City ever year in June and took a day trip to Lawrence a must stop is here for a hair cut for all the boys. By far this place gives the best haircuts and have yet to find a barber shop at home as good as his place. read more
