Five stars??? Geddouddahereyabum! The owner will have nothing of the sort, nor, apparently, will some of his Yelping customers... LOL. I kind of get the love it, hate it thing going on here but I'll be going back. I sort of braced for the experience figuring, yea, this is probably not unlike going to Floyd the Barber in an Andy Griffith Mayberry episode. It's at once a community water cooler, b.s. laden gossip headquarters for men with little to no hair, sports fantasy betting discussions, you get the general idea. The path to the trip here was born a few evenings earlier, on possibly a wine fueled whim, I begged this missus to cut all my hair off, and, OK, to be honest, there wasn't a lot up there. In the process, besides a good laugh and having a really spectacular pinot noir whilst she worked her magic (how many places offer THAT?) I saved a few dollars. Or so I thought, upon further inspection. So downtown to Rex's I go and tell him what happened. "Yea, I thought that was probably what happened, and I can fix this easily enough," was his response. All while barely missing a beat talking to others about some real estate dealings. Will say this: Rex did a good job, took his time, paid close attention and did some trimming I didn't ask for and left a very happy customer. It's pretty apparent to me he cares about his work. I tipped him $2 which isn't a lot but it's a $14 haircut. He seemed surprised at the amount. Put it toward that next real estate deal I was thinking. So, yea, pull up in front, peer in the window and see the decades of Univ. of Kansas sports memorabilia and the others working in there and you shouldn't be surprised at what's going on inside. I'll be back. Pretty sure they don't offer wine but I didn't check. Yea, I'd probably go five stars if they did. read more

A great haircut at a fair price! No appointment needed just walk in off the street. There's usually at least two or three barbers working and they're all really good. I recommend Rex or Tim, but the rest of them are just as good. read more

Rex's is a small, unassuming barber shop not far from our home and because I support small, local businesses, I decided to give them a try. The four chairs were empty late on a Saturday morning, so I had a seat. The shop is decorated with hundreds of old KU (University of Kansas) photos and other sports memorabilia, clearly having been collected since 1928 when the barber shop was founded by its original owner. Prices are fair, just $10 for a regular haircut ($8 for military although I was not offered a discount as a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel), and the haircut precise and well proportioned. I gave minimal direction to Rex, only telling him to taper the sides and back and off he went. Before I knew it, my hair was perfectly short and neat, just the way it had been in 20+ years in the military. With miltary haircuts on base (post) hovering between $7 and $8, $10 in downtown Lawrence is a bargain! Rex has some cool paintings in the back room, caricatures of the KU Jayhawk and other characters painted back in the early 1950s, possibly earlier. A friendly, welcoming shop with good prices and the feel of an old time barber shop, I will be returning to Rex's for my haircuts for the foreseeable future! Told the guy I wanted it Very Short. No more than finger width on the sides and not much more than that on top. After 3 times telling him to go shorter it became clear it wasn't happening so I paid him, went home, and buzzed it. The back looks nice though. I have been looking for a good place to get my beard trimmed. Saw a man in Lawrence with a great beard and asked him where he had it trimmed, and he referred me to Rex's. A barber named Joshua did a great job and even gave me tips on how to take care of it as I continue to let it grow out. Definitely a fan. read more

The decor is a bit run down, but the old sports photos are cool. The guys that work their are friendly and I walk out looking like I expected to. Love the consistency. They even keep a stash of change so you can feed the meters out front. read more
