We decided to shop locally and support one of the smaller stores in our area only to be penalized for it. Bought a 12-cup coffee pot as a gift for someone only to find the recipient already had one. Returned the unopened item to Down East Ace only to discover they charge a restocking fee and we lost nearly $15. Looks like we won't be buying much from them in the future. read more

Bought a Yeti cooler online, went to the store to pick it up and after signing for it the cashier tells me I have to wait for a manager. After about 15 min I was getting frustrated, I had groceries in my car and the cashier used his little mike to get someone and no one came. I told him this is BS, defeats the purpose of buying online so that you can just pick it up and go. Needless to say, told him I was taking my cooler and walking out and that is what SHE did!!! Can't say how much I love this place! Well staffed so when I needed assistance it took no time at all to get it. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I didn't need to hunt around to find help. Well stocked and tidy. I purchase lots of paint for my projects and am never charged for sticks or paint can openers unlike other store in town. I went to this Ace store looking for a quart of wood preservative to paint onto end cuts on pressure treated lumber. The store manager showed me where it was, but it was only available in the gallon size. I described my project (painting end cuts only), and he could see that a quart would be much more practical. He decided to order a case of these, and when it came in, I bought what I needed - hence, much less waste. This is above and beyond what I would normally expect. Terrific service. read more

my brother and I went in looking for rubber mulch. They did not have any so they had to order what I wanted. They told me I had just missed the deadline by six minutes to have the order there on Wednesday coming up. So since I missed the deadline, I would have to wait until the next Wednesday. Six whole minutes, but rules and all that, I get it. I was not given any paperwork showing the terms or anything so I assumed that meant whatever is on the website is what I need to be concerned with. when we enter the store and someone approached us, I told him what I wanted and he went to talk to. I assume the manager or the owner. I got nothing but suspicious looks from the man and they were whispering a lot. All I could think was what are they whispering about. Then the one guy who I thought was manager or owner walked past me didn't say anything to speak to some other guys that look like they worked there. It was as if they didn't really want to put the order in for me. I really needed the mulch to finish my landscaping and on Thursday I found out that Lowes could have the mulch delivered that Friday , so I wouldn't have to wait until the next week on Wednesday. So from what I read on the website, I should've been able to cancel the order with no repercussions. But the guy who answered the phone went to find out if I could cancel and told me that there was a 40% restocking fee. For something that had not even probably been loaded or thought about yet. It was about a week that I had to wait for the mulch so I'm thinking what is the 40% restocking fee and why was I not informed. It's not anywhere on the receipt, but the return policy is on the receipt. on the website it tells you everything about returns. Cancellations, home deliveries, store deliveries and pick ups. Nowhere does it say anything about a restocking fee. It just seems a little vindictive, If you ask me. I've never even heard of a restocking fee that high. Like mom always said, all that glitters ain't gold. If you gave a good review then apparently you didn't make waves and count yourself lucky. The order wasn't even supposed to be here until 6 days later. After I talked with an employee someone was supposed to call me back. Well they just went on and canceled the order and took their 40%. Didn't even bother to call me back. This place sucks. This feels almost personal. People should be allowed to cancel an order and not be punished for it. I went with Lowes because they could have my mulch to me the next day. Absolutely ridiculous! Should've known he wasn't a good guy by the way he was whispering to the guy who took my order and walked past me without a smile, hello, be right with you or anything. Won't be going there again and I hope people who see this will take heed. Feels so vindictive charging someone 40% when the order hadn't even been loaded. RIDICULOUS! AGAIN, 40%!! Instead of helping people he seeks to punish if things don't go his way. This store is not there for customer, it's there to rob customer. read more

We've been to this Ace a few times now and have always been greeted at the door by someone. The store is kept immaculate and they always give great customer service. They always have a great selection of hardware whereas other stores have empty drawers. We've purchased door locks and the employees didn't mind at all to key them to match our existing doors unlike Lowe's who now seem to barely want to help anyone. My only issue with this store is the access to the parking lot. Depending on which direction you come from it can be a little difficult getting into the parking lot. Maybe they can work on fixing the side entrance. read more
