Our children have myopia and some other issues that need to be monitored regularly by a pediatric ophthalmologist rather than an optometrist. It's been so helpful to us with our busy schedules that we have her office down the street from us. Our kids have been seeing Dr. Simon since they were very young... I'm talking 6 month old preemie young. She is highly skilled at her job and is experienced in getting squirmy, pre-verbal children to cooperate and have fun responding to her directions and questions. It's been amazing to watch her interact with our children over the years during their different stages of development. She remembers everything about them at every visit and encourages them to continue to be good people, respect their eyes, and their glasses at a young age. I've had to call the office for various accommodations and emergencies and her staff has always been on top of things. They are always very friendly, understanding, meticulous, and work fast at helping their busy young patients. The only change that came about during the Covid pandemic of 2020 was the office doesn't accept any insurance plans right now. That's not too surprising. The office used to accept insurance before the pandemic. Hopefully times will improve and her office will accept insurance again sooner than later.

Everyone else has simply brushed us off and told us just apply a warm compress. Dr. DeCastro took his time with us, didn't rush us out like all the others we've seen, and is very knowledgeable! So happy to have him!

I would not recommend South Bay Eye Institute…read more The biggest frustration is their check-in process. They recently started using Phreesia, and instead of making things easier, it feels like a data collection and marketing platform. Patients are asked to repeatedly enter the same information at every visit, even when nothing has changed and they may have been seen just days earlier. The system also aggressively pushes patients to pay balances in advance and store payment information before presenting offers and services that may not be relevant. The office itself feels heavily overbooked. Even if you arrive for a scheduled appointment, expect a crowded waiting room and significant delays. In my experience, being seen 30 minutes late was routine, and there were often many other patients waiting at the same time. My treatment journey was also inefficient and expensive. I scheduled an appointment to have an eyelid cyst evaluated for removal, but was initially booked with a general ophthalmologist who quickly determined that I needed an eyelid specialist instead. That visit lasted only a few minutes and still came with a $40 copay. When I saw the specialist, there was another $40 copay, and then yet another $40 follow-up visit after surgery that amounted to little more than a brief visual inspection of the healing process. To be fair, Dr. Jain was personable, professional, and performed the eyelid surgery competently. However, I was surprised to learn that the office lacked some of the equipment she would have preferred to use, forcing her to work around those limitations. If I ever need similar treatment again, I would seek out Dr. Jain at another location rather than return to this office. Overall, the experience felt rushed, inefficient, and designed to maximize patient volume and billing opportunities rather than convenience or patient care. While the physician herself was good, the office operations left a lot to be desired. Even for something as simple as routine eye care or glasses, I would look elsewhere.

I was referred to him as an emergency case by my general ophthalmologist due to my sudden visual lost/ retinal detachment. I've been going to several ophthalmologists for the past couple days but none of them was able to help:( He was the one doctor who was on call that weekend luckily(apparently Retina Vitreous Group is the most reputable and biggest retina group in LA county and there are 11 doctors total in their huge group!!) He returned my ophthalmologist's call immediately, took over my case and saw me right away in his downtown office. He did surgery and got my vision back! It is horrifying that so many eye surgeons were not able to figure out my issue until I was referred to him. I wish there were more doctors like him who genuinely cares about patients' health and EYES! Thank you again Dr. Tan!!!!

First the office is well-staffed with professionals who enjoy their work! Extremely organized and competent; better yet, great attitudes! Therefore, they serve many patients at a time, in a relaxed and methodical manner! So, your appointment moves along smoothly without delay!! Amazing, isn't it! Most importantly, Dr. Tan is an accomplished physician. I had to ask: yes, he's a USC Fellow and "teaching physician", conducting periodic professional discussion and review. His time with you is unhurried, delivering your diagnosis as if a consulting friend, realistic and practical. You get the straight scoop, no exaggeration, no magic meds, or program to fix the un-fixable. So, we get to watch my condition over time. I'm OK with that.

Waiting was kind of long, 40 mins, there were two patients ahead of me. Clean office, staff are adequately polite It took them three tries to dilate my eye, the assistant commented my eye is too stubborn, ha. Since I put down yelp as my referral to the business, both the assistant and the doctor asked me, "what's yelp?" prompting me to give each of them a brife history of yelp individually. Hey, shouldn't I get paid for this? I guess he's well-established here, cause I recognize his face from back in the days when i was working in S. Bay Hospital. No hello or any pleasantry when first seeing me, but instructing me to put my purse on the chair. He seems to be a genteel person, so maybe that's the way he operates. He checked my eye with bright beam of light, and informed me that there is no tear to my retina, but he needs to see me in three weeks. I had a few questions to ask him but he gestured me to leave. Oh well, doctors are busy, I understand that. Overall, nah. I had it better

They only wrote me a prescription for glasses and said I had to come back for another appointment to get the contacts. They should have said that in the FIRST place. I would not have come to see them. VERY VERY misleading in my opinion. I do not have a schedule that allows me to come in on the days she is there. Now I will have to go somewhere else to get my contacts. I will not return. Their excuse is that sometimes they have a girl answer e phones who doesn't know all the procedures. Might want to educate your staff.
