To be fair, they've given it a good go, but there just isn't a way to compete with Krispy Kremes is there? Theres just something about it, some secret ingredient, that makes their doughnuts irresistible. It's a bit like Hienz ketchup, that kind of thing. There's just no imitating it. Donut Dreams do actually sell the kind of doughnuts you are likely to dream about. They're all so brightly coloured with different colourful toppings, as if they've been lifted straight from Homer. No, not the ancient Greek writer, but the character from The Simpsons. This maybe makes it a better place to treat kinds to a doughnut than is Krispy Kremes. The taste though, whilst not bad, just cannot compete. They have a slightly bready texture that Krispy Kremes manage to avoid, and with one five minutes down the road, Donut Dreams will have to accept three stars.

Canadians (and some Americans) will no doubt jump for joy when they see their coffee institution in the UK. The oddest thing is that Tim Horton's of Canada (Tim Horton was an ice hockey player) is in the Spar shop. In Canada, I guess it's not the coolest place to go but I care more about the coffee tasting good. And like in Canada, it's cheaper than anywhere else and yet famously, they brew new coffee every 20 minutes which in my mind is pretty fresh. Let's not forget their bagels and doughnut treats too; Over the Atlantic there are many varieties to get addicted to but here in Birmingham, there is still a decent selection. If you go in, let me know if they start doing a 'sour cream glazed' and I'll be back in! This is my regular stop if I'm popping to the central library or running down Broad Street to Cineworld. Luckily for us marooned locals, Freshly Made Donuts brings the feel of the traditional British seaside to us. Don't be fooled by its name. Yes, the store serves gorgeous smelling and tasting, freshly made donuts, but this is only part of the story as far as I'm concerned. As I approach the stand I can taste the saltiness of the sea, I can hear the bleeps of the arcades and I can even feel sand getting between my toes. The counter is full of those kinds of sweets you weren't even sure they made anymore. Where else could you buy walking sticks and umbrellas stuffed with Smarties when you're a hundred miles or more from the sea in any direction? The sandcastles, sunglasses, and donkey rides don't end there. Freshly Made Donuts also serves cones of vanilla ice cream from Jersey Dairies. But the selection was so tempting so I bought three more!!! It's great that every few weeks they have a couple of new flavours eg cookie dough while for Valentine's they had cute bee designed ones! I bought the "croissant dough doughnuts", dumdum doesn't seem to call them cronuts but they are not like a cronut anyway... I felt the dough was dry and not layered as I believe it should have been... I did have an amazing one in NYC which I will be reviewing soon. The dulce de leche did not taste like dulce de leche... It was more like caramel, and before anyone says they are the same: I was born in Argentina, and I love dulce de leche, this did not taste like it and it was filled with whipped cream... Not my favourite. For the price tag... I expect A Lot more. The zebra one was dry as a rock. Flavour was okay. May give a different type of doughnut a try but not soon, I was dissapointed.

Dunkin' Donuts recently opened a store at The Rock, Bury which is one of the few stores which they…read morehave in the UK, a brand that is obviously big in North America and parts of Europe including The Netherlands, never seems to have taken off here. It is a small unit, they do have a small seating range, the store did feel to have a lack of room to the point where if it was busy, you might even have to wait outside, on a nice day there is room for outdoor seating which would be a good idea when the UK government guidelines allow it. I ordered a large iced vanilla latte, it was a little expensive at £3.50, this would have cost more than going to many of my regular favourite coffee shops including Black Sheep Coffee, Joe and the Juice and Starbucks, sadly none of which seem to have branches in Bury. My coffee was overfilled which meant it was hard to put the straw in without all the drink gushing out, the lid also seemed poor quality so didn't help with that. I had to stir my drink as all the syrup was at the bottom, but the coffee was pretty bad quality, it tasted slightly watery and lacked freshness. The store looked good (despite the fact it could easily appear cramped with only a few people), and is a nice brand to have in Bury, but with overpriced coffee at mediocre quality, it isn't somewhere I'd want to return. 2* Review #3400
