Came here twice and both times got the famous Bakewell pudding! Good: - Was the best place for Bakewell pudding and tart in the area by ratings in Google - The portion sizes are huge for each thing - the large sized Bakewell were huge and we split with 5 people - Milkshake was refreshing, but kind of tasted like water still and it wasn't very milky like I wanted it to be - Pretty cute wood aesthetic Bad: - The Bakewell desserts were too sweet - my teeth hurt a bit afterwards - French onion soup just wasn't very tasty - it was a lot like mustard tasting - Service was a little slow, it took a while for people to get to us Overall enjoyed coming here and all of the food we got but would not come again. read more

We had a nice afternoon tea here overall after walking on the Monsal Trail in December 2022. The ambience and decor of the place are nice, an old building with an attractive and comfortable dining room upstairs with some nice old beams and the shop downstairs. Tea itself was very good, the bakewell tarts were great (although a bit sweeter than what we're used to for bakewell tarts) (4 stars) and the bakewell pudding was excellent (5 stars). Sandwiches were not as good, overly large and kind of plain and out of balance, being on a large roll rather than sliced bread, and the filling being rather coarse (3 stars). Service was overall good, but a little mixed with most friendly and attentive, but one server was a bit curt and tended to ignore us. Overall, this was very good and we would definitely go back but with a better idea of what we like. read more

Food is expensive (ham & piccalili sandwich, seven quid - panini, same) and the staff don't care about you enough to bring you cutlery with your food, so you have to get it yourself. Fruit scones only, no plain ones. "We sell them but only in packets" so it's impossible to have them with your cream tea. We spent £20 instead of £40 as a result; their loss, not ours. Sandwiches without butter on the bread. Wtf? Panini had surprise ingredients, e.g. the "buffalo mozarella panini with basil, olive and pesto oil" had actual olives in it and no trace of pesto whatsoever. The inside of the shop is "cute" but you can get the majority of the fare from any tourist or seaside shop. Cheeses, chutneys, plaques that say "you don't have to be crazy to live here but it helps", etc... that sort of thing. We didn't stick around for cakes after our meal. And you're not permitted to smoke in the open outdoor courtyard, apparently. read more

Lovely old building with lots of character and history! We just had to stop in for an afternoon treat! They do have a full menu but we opted for just a coffee, tea, bakewell pudding and tart! They were all sorts of delicious and I love that it came with custard and cream. Prices are just a little bit higher than your normal but I think it comes with the area and the novelty. Definitely give them a try if you're in town! read more

Had to be one of the biggest disappointments of my trip to England! I am a fan of Bakewell Tart (sorry pudding). Having read the tour guide spiel that in Bakewell they make them like they're supposed to be made I was really looking forward to it. The shop is on the main street. You enter and are greeted by a quaint country style cakes shop/deli. Then you head upstairs for the seating area, which was similarly nice. Staff were nice and attentive. " Two of the original puddings for me and my companion (of course), with custard on the side", please. a tad on the pricey side - but hey...this is the home of the pud afterall. The presentation was nice - served on a small plate with a well for the little custard jug to sit in. The pudding itself didnt look to appealing but as they say 'the proof is in the pudding'. Pastry was rubbery, filling was the weirdest bakewell filling Ive ever sampled: not much of a jam taste or an almond one at that - just sweet goo. I understand that maybe the bastardised versions I eat arent true to the original but they a million times better tasting than this fare. Then the custard..... In fairness it seemed to be made from scratch i.e. not powdered; but it was lumpy, with more of an egg taste than vanilla. I nearly cried :'( read more

Would normally avoid leading bad reviews, but felt compelled to after witnessing many hapless punters being swindled at this place. 'Original' it may be, but quality this place isn't. All we wanted was a nice Bakewell pudding and were recommended this place by a local. Nope. It took about 20 minutes for our order to be taken, despite trying several times to catch an eye. The staff were too busy being stressed to take care of any of the tables waiting to order. It took easily another 20 minutes for our tea & cakes (!) to arrive. The only redeeming feature is the Bakewell pudding itself - it was delicious in fairness BUT we were so pressed for time we had to scoff it down. What should have been a quick and pleasant tea break was nearly an hour of irritation. Save yourself and go somewhere else. read more

Personally i found the food too dense and you couldnt get through a single tart without feeling bloated. It was £2 for a single brownie which i think is quite overpriced. It also took 1/2 hour to be seated when many places were available. There creativity in decoration though is above average, it is just sad that they didnt meet the taste requirements as well. read more

The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop is well known in Derbyshire for selling Bakewell Puddings made to a traditional recipe and quite unlike anything you can buy in the supermarket. The choice of delicious food available here is endless and now Christmas is around the corner I'd recommend you hotfooting it to the Bakewell Pudding Shop for all your luxury munchies to see you through until New Year. Don't you dare call it a Bakewell Tart in here as the staff are trained like rottweillers to overhear the quietest comment about Mr Kipling, and will loudly explain that the original pudding was in fact called a pudding and certainly not a cake or a tart! There are much more than puddings available in this shop; treat yourself to some flavoured fudge, homemade Farmers Pickle or some good old fashioned boiled sweets. The last time I visited I spent an absolute fortune on bits and pieces and everything was delicious. Of course I bought a couple of Bakewell Puddings and they were spongy and delicious, unlike the drier versions I sometimes buy from Tesco. You can really tell that this is a good quality dessert and is wonderful with thick custard! As well as food, the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop sells a range of gifts to remind you of your visit to Bakewell. I bought my girls' a Bakewell Pudding teddy bear each wearing a Bakewell Pudding jumper and also a couple of tea towels printed with the traditional recipe of Bakewell Pudding for my mum and mother in law, actually I went back the following day to get another one as I quite fancied making a Pudding myself and the tea towel looks fab pinned to the wall in the kitchen. On our final day in Bakewell we ate at the upstairs restaurant in the Pudding Shop and the food was superb. We had planned only on having a sandwich and a cup of coffee, but eventually decided to have a full meal because we were travelling home afterwards and fancied a treat. I had homemade soup (Chicken that day, although it changes daily) followed by the most delicious and moist gammon steak which had a fried egg and pineapple slice sitting on the top, as well as chips, breaded mushrooms, onion rings and peas. It was delicious and so filling that I couldn't even order the delicious looking shortbread dessert I had had my eye on all afternoon! My fella had a mixed grill which was absolutely huge and contained any breakfast item you could possibly think of, he didn't have a dessert either and couldn't even finish his cuppa after eating all that! I'd definitely recommend a visit to the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, whether you're just going to pick up some sweets, a Pudding or to have a meal you're bound to love the quaint and traditional atmosphere in this shop! read more

The bakery advertises and offers the ability to mail a pudding anywhere in the world. Being a naive tourist, I bought into this and paid them to have it delivered to a friend in Canada as a souvenir. After 3 months and a repeated delivery it still hasn't arrived. Additionally, the bakery refuses to use any service with a simple tracking number so I have no clue what happened to them. As far as I'm aware they could have completely ignored the delivery since there's no way for me to know. Don't waste your money. read more
