I follow Saturday Morning Co. on Instagram. I don't know how I found out about this business, but I'm glad that I did.
This small business is run by a husband-and-wife team, Peter and Linda. The dumpling recipes are from Peter's mom. They make them from scratch.
They first started making their dumplings for friends and family. As word got out to strangers, they decided to expand their offerings to everyone.
The idea is that you preorder on Wednesday to pick them up on Saturday each week. The pickup location is at Dots Grey Kitchen, which offers a number of services, from a shared commercial kitchen, to private and corporate events.
It was National Dumpling Day last Tuesday. I got a promo code to get 20% off my order.
I bought the following dumplings:
- Pork, shrimp, and chives
- Chicken and mushrooms
You get twelve dumplings in each package.
It was straightforward making my payment online. I got details on where to go to pick up my items. The pickup window was last Saturday between 9 am and 1 pm.
This kitchen is located in an industrial area in northeast Minneapolis. I had no problem finding it. However, dumplings were so popular that I couldn't find any street parking at around 12:20 pm. Instead, I parked in a lot at a business next to this kitchen. Luckily, no one was there to find me parked there and perhaps tow my car.
I walked in. I had the nicest woman who helped me. I mentioned my first and last names. She retrieved my order and went ahead to place my dumplings in a paper bag with handles. She asked if I was a new customer. I was, so I got the scoop on everything, including getting details on how to pan-fry them.
All dumpling packages were in huge coolers at this venue. It was recommended to bring a cooler. I didn't have one, so I drove back to my hotel to place them in the freezer. My commute was twenty minutes, so all was good.
I pan-fried dumplings on Sunday. The instructions were similar to how I make them at home. There are text and visual instructions on Saturday Morning Co.'s Instagram account if you need help.
My dumplings were delicious! Both flavours were jam-packed with filling. The pork, shrimp, and chives were the perfect flavour combination. The chives, in particular, made these dumplings special.
I love chicken and mushroom dumplings. These one were fantastic, with solid small chunks of mushrooms mixed in with the chicken filling. Yummy!
I am making the remaining dumplings today. You can't nuke them in the microwave, as the filling is raw and it would take forever to cook.
My first experience was excellent. I look forward to getting more dumplings down the road.
The place also offers hot foods. Last week, it was spring rolls. I have also seen them offer steamed baos in the past. I hope to try the non-dumpling options in future, too.
