I had tried to do my taxes myself and had completed everything except one serious problem with inputting and coding one of my 1099-R as a refund of Basis I prepaid on an annuity product that I cancelled and the Basis was refunded to me, not to be counted as income. The program I was using included the amount refunded as Income instead of refund of Basis adding to my gross income. Struggling with the program, I could not get this resolved and could not finish my taxes. I called Wolverine and John Eaton answered my call. I explained the above to John. John actually listens. John came up with solutions. He said I did not need Wolverine for a simple return because of the cost. John proposed that he recommend a tax preparer to do my return and file it. John made 3 phone calls on my behalf and consulted with his staff members to find a person out of office qualified to do my returns. John called me back to keep me informed of his progress. John consulted with me about my tax problem on his time and with no compensation. John Eaton is extraordinary, capable, smart, kind and generous. We came on a snowy Thursday afternoon and Joe the tax professional helped us; he's been working for H&R for about 8 years after he retired from Chrysler. We gave him all of our documents, and he was very thorough in explaining what he was doing and how he was going to get us what we could for our return. He was also great at explaining the fees it would cost for us to get our returns and what would be a faster and better solution. Everyone who had helped us were really nice. Good service, things were explained to us, so we could understand what was going on, and we were able to get our refund right away that day. I had dropped off my taxes later in the season than I had wanted, so they said they would file an extension. Great! I wasn't in a hurry. I called to ask for an update a few days after tax day. Just an update to make sure things didn't get lost. I wasn't not in a hurry but I do like to make sure I'm still on the books. Office staff again was accommodating and pleasant and said she would talk with Tom and leave him a note. Sounded good to me! I get a call from Tom a few minutes later and he's short with me, asking me questions, cutting me off, and is downright rude. I'm not in the habit of letting anyone talk down to me, especially when I provided all the paperwork necessary, along with an extensive excel sheet with totals clearly labeled. He wanted me to access the same spreadsheet and read him all the same information he was holding in his hands. It seems like his first reaction is to get frustrated and angry, which doesn't make sense to display to a paying customer. Our second phone call resulted in swearing. Look, when you're in a professional setting and you don't know the person on the other end of the phone, professionalism should be the default. Not only this but he called my job a hobby. He can take his opinions and shove them because I will not be returning. He seems to have a patience issue that he needs to work on. Therapy can be very helpful for this.
