Enjoyed our Christmas visit to the Dormer House. Arrived late on Friday, but key was waiting as promised and we found our way to the Diana Room #11, located on the back side of the house up a narrow and steep stairwell. The room was nice, with window daylight on both sides of the room. Bed was comfortable enough- a mattress on the firm side- and neutral pillows. No room temp control was visable, but temps were perfect at about 68. Room had a small TV, fridge, and was clean. No room complaints besides a toilet tag didn't have pressure to fill the tank during mor ING rush. Hot water for showers was plentiful, and pressure was good. Two provided breakfasts were fantastic. Saturday was cream-cheese stuffed french toast and sausage links; Sunday featured scrambled eggs, bacon, seasoned hash browns. Muffins and breads accompanied each meal. Portion sizes were fantastic. Downstairs common areas feature a comfortable living room and open and enclosed porches. Parking is provided for each room. Dormer House was featured on the MAC Candlelight House Tour (highly recomend), so it was decorated nicely for Christmas. Cookies and tea are available each afternoon. Location and proximity to Washington Mall is great; it is a little further to the beaches, but maybe an 8 minute walk. So many neat options for lodging in CM, but we'd definitely return to the Dormer House! read more

A cozy stay in the Shannon Room! There are tea and treats upon check in. The room was clean and exactly as pictured. The staff were helpful and friendly. We appreciated the outdoor showers and beach items although we did not use them. Breakfast was simple yet delicious. My favorites were the baked goods and the bacon. It was a quick drive to Sunset Beach and the downtown Cape May area. We also enjoyed an evening stroll around the neighborhood and saw many people riding bikes. Just returned from our 5th straight year at the Dormer House. The accommodations are lovely and the staff is so friendly, but honestly what keeps us coming back are the breakfasts. Hands down the greatest breakfasts we have ever had. The breakfasts are fresh and well-balanced and made from scratch. Even the cakes and cookies offered at afternoon tea are way above average. We have stayed in 4 different rooms over 5 years and each has offered a unique experience. We can't wait for another summer day sipping lemonade and rocking on the shady porch at the Dormer House. I have zero experience staying at a B & B but I loved our three night, four day stay. This is not a luxe property but you definitely feel at home here. Post-COVID there is no one to greet you because of social distancing and sanitizing room keys for the check-in process. The room was clean and cool due to a window A.C. unit on a very hot summer July day. There were loose tiles in the bathroom which made some noise when stepped on. A hot breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, egg bake with ham, etc.) and a freshly baked loaf of heavenly bread along with fresh fruit and sides were served daily. One day when there was no vegetarian option for me, they offered to make something special for me which I declined but was happy to have the offer. Tea time at 3 pm is in the lobby with a hot carafe of water, a tea selection and freshly baked, bagged cookies for each room number. Also provided are outdoor showers, beach chairs and towels. One parking spot per guest room with a few extra for those who don't follow rules. (This really saved us one night). The location is excellent with a quick walk to the beach, Washington promenade, Acme supermarket, convention center, etc. The majority of the guests were respectful of one another and friendly and at the very least courteous (except one Karen). Most people who stay here have stayed here before and they want to keep it the best kept secret in Cape May. The best part of the stay is porch sitting and people watching. We came for our anniversary and a relative called to request something special for us. They provided champagne, an ice bucket and glasses as a very nice surprise. Nancy is a key figure in the running of this B & B and an amazingly hard worker who's wish is to have anyone who stays there to have the best possible experience. She is pretty wonderful and I hope the owners, who also own Hotel Chalfonte, appreciate her as much as the guests do. read more

Such a pretty spot right on Columbia street. There is private parking which is HUGE on cape May. We park on day one and literally didn't go in the car again until we leave. You can walk to the beach and to all the restaurants and shops from dormer house. The house is obviously old and if you are looking for a modern luxury stay this is going to disappoint you but if you are looking for a warm friendly b&b stay in a historic home and location this is your place! The only thing I will add is that I really wish they had a king bed option in a room or two as I am a light sleeper and really love a little extra space. Other than that no complaints read more

In October of 2020 our best friends and my husband and I stayed in Cape May for two nights. While there we talked of what a wonderful event a Cape May Christmas might be. In November we decided to try to embark on just that fantasy! Our goal was to find a B&B that would handle the two couples checking in on Christmas day, and a restaurant to have Christmas evening dinner. My friend found open reservations at Dormer House, but we hesitated until I could find dinner reservations. Every place I called said no, they were closed either for the holiday or for the season. I finally found a reservation for us at The Blue Pig. With that secured, we made our reservations at Dormer House. After experiencing trouble with stairs, my husband who has a heart condition asked if we could find 1st floor rooms. We did, right off the main entrance and next to each other. On Christmas morning my friend called to say they were about to leave and asked if Nancy from the inn had phoned me. She said that Nancy wanted to let us know that the inn was all ours for the day and evening. She was leaving our keys and info on the hall table, and would be back in the morning to serve breakfast around 8am! Upon arrival we found the porch entrance door, from the parking lot, open for us. We arrived within 10 minutes of each other and were thrilled! Nancy had not only left our key with darling welcome notes for each, but wax bags of homemade cookies for each room on the side board in the parlor. The rooms were so charming and neat and clean. Our bath was larger than I anticipated with nice shelves and areas in order to put our toiletries. (alot of places are so decorated there is no room for that) The queen bed was very comfortable. The fireplace in the main foyer is thermostat controlled and so was on when we arrived, dying down every so often only to re-ignite when needed. The house was decorated with a very large (8 foot I believe) holiday tree by the grand staircase. The mantle was decorated, as well as the door lentils and windows. A carafe with hot water was on the side board, with an assortment of teas, cookies and mugs. Wine glasses were supplied with cork screws. We brought with us wine and cheese for the afternoon and so took advantage of those items. There is also a very large ice maker tucked into a corner closet under the stairs. There happened to be a transformer fire on the corner when we arrived and in short order an officer knocked on the door to let us know that it was safe, they were taping off the opposing sidewalk for safety and crews would be out shortly. We left for our 6:30 dinner reservations and when we retuned around 8:30pm, the fire truck with flashing lights and such were still there. Exhausted, we all retired around 10pm. Unfortunately, and this is not the inns fault of course, we slept little. The fire truck was on the side of the house in which our room, and windows, faced. Even with the blinds drawn, we had flashing lights and noisy radios chatter until 1am when the electric service trucks arrived, then noise until 2:17 when they left finally. I think I finally slept around 3am. In the morning I found the bath room in our room very cold. It has a thick marble floor, and being about 30 degrees outside, the little baseboard heat was doing little to stop the cold from travelling up the ground to the marble. I asked Nancy if I could plug in the space heater I found the the room closet to ward off that chill and she not only agreed I should, but offered to do so, or move us, and when I said no, we were fine, she said to leave it on to keep the room warm. Breakfast was amazing!!! We had big fluffy pancakes, sausage, fruit, warm syrup, and cinnamon swirl bread fresh from the oven! Fresh orange juice and coffee and tea. We were all stuffed! Breakfast was served on the side enclosed porch and that was just charming - even in the dead of winter the sun coming through those windows warmed us, and sparkled with the old glass there. Nancy was so friendly that my friend and I felt like we'd known her for years. After a nice afternoon and lunch, we came back so I could nap before dinner. We arrived back at the inn to find more wax bagged cookies meant for us! Upon coming back for the evening, we had refreshments & sat in the parlor where my husband played guitar & we sang. The room is decorated with lovely period antiques and an old player piano. There is also a basket of menus form all the local restaurants available, which is so helpful! Our friends needed to head right home on Sunday morning, but my husband and I had wanted to spend the day in town. That helped my husband to be able to take his heart medications and rest before our 2+ hours drive home. We will 100% come back to this inn!! read more

This bed and breakfast is owned and ran by the most friendly people. Breakfast is great and the amenities were unbeatable. Huge ice machine, free parking and WiFi. Even after we checked out they offered to let us keep our car in the parking lot if we wanted to spend the rest of our day in Cape May. Things like that aren't common nowadays. They also offered for us to come back after check out for tea and lemonade which is served everyday 3:30-4:30. Cape May is great and staying at the Dormer House made our experience even better. Never staying at a bed and breakfast before I was somewhat anxious of how everything would go but we felt right at home as soon as we walked in. I would highly recommend! read more

Cons: This was the first time my husband and I were staying at The Dormer House. We were fully aware check-in was at 2. But since we arrived early around 12:30 we thought we would give it a shot and see if it would be possible to check in early. As we walked into the Inn, there was no one there to greet us so we decided to knock on an Office door. We believe Nancy the innkeeper (she did not introduce herself) came out of the office and we asked her if it was possible to check in early. She asked our names and we received a quick brief response that we were way too early and that she would leave the room key on the table outside our room after 2. My husband and I were taken back by the lack of hospitality especially since this was our first stay there. Most would feel a better response would have been "hello my name is Nancy the innkeeper nice to meet you both". "Unfortunately, I apologize the room is not ready". A nice touch would have been "Is this your first time visiting Cape May I can recommend some good restaurants in the area you can have lunch at while you wait for your room to be ready". Needless to say, this would have been more welcoming. This was our only interaction with the innkeeper during the entire four days we stayed there. She was not a presence at the Inn from our experience. *The interior of our room Room #2 (Dorothy Thompson Room) needed some attention. The large floor tiles in the bathroom were only placed on the floor not secured they were wobbly and uneven with a bath rug placed over them. We kept losing our balance which we feel could have possibly led to a safety hazard as well. *Ceiling paint was visibly chipping off *Ceiling fan was not balanced and would make loud noises when on medium to high setting *The bed pillows were flat and lumpy which didn't provide support for the head or neck We have stayed at numerous bed and breakfasts in Cape May over the years. So, we weren't expecting the interior room to be in 100% perfect condition. We understand that the upkeep of these homes takes a lot of manpower and hard work. However, there should have been more attention paid to the comfort and safety of the room, and we felt that the lack of hospitality upon check-in detracted from the experience we had.. As a result, we would not return to this Inn in the future, in spite of all of the "Pros", but would go back to others where we have stayed in the past. Pros: Great location close to beach, restaurants, and the Washington Street mall. Parking lot with ample parking spaces Delicious breakfast which included an assortment of muffins, bread, and full breakfast. Beautiful Victorian home on the exterior with a lovely porch to sit, relax and unwind. Afternoon tea and cookies were provided in the common area. However, we would have preferred to be given more than one cookie each - perhaps 2 each would have been ideal. read more

We were only able to stay one night in our room (Sleigh Room, third floor, booked for a week) as the smell of mold and mildew was so strong, it kept us up throughout the night. The room is in desperate need of renovation. The carpet should be torn out and replaced. The sink greets you as soon as you open the door, quite odd. I suspect that the mold and mildew is due to the sink being in a carpeted area. The furniture is very old, dirty, and rickety. Some sanding and paint would do wonders. The room was very dirty--looked as if the carpet hadn't been vacuumed in ages. Cobwebs on the ceiling and walls. The room has a window air conditioner, which is quite loud. I did not attempt to open the window as the screen did not fit and would probably have allowed in bugs. I suspect that if the fire marshal took a good look at the building, she/he would flunk the Dormer House. There are extension cords hanging on the outside attached to other cords. These cords are not outdoor cords. This place is a fire hazard! The sitting room on the first floor is very warm as there is no air conditioning. The whole building is showing its age. The staff was very good, and the breakfasts were quite good. Another plus was that there is a parking lot. Since we could not stay in our room due to the mold and mildew and there were no other rooms available, the staff worked with the Chalfonte Hotel to get us a room (a terrible room), and we were allowed to have breakfast at Dormer and utilize the parking lot. I would not consider staying here again, even in another room, and I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone else. read more

Used a Groupon for a weekend celebrating an anniversary and it was well worth it! House was warm and welcoming, inside and out (Christmas decorations were going up, perfect for setting the mood on a cold Nov weekend), and breakfast was delicious each day (best breakfast potatoes I've ever had). Dennis, Lucille, Diana and Mike were very friendly and accommodating. We had requested to move in to a suite on our final night (once the suites became available), and they upgraded us free of cost to the best room in the house (the Smith Cottage-complete w jacuzzi and fire place!). This was perfect to celebrate our engagement, along with a complementary bottle of red and a kind note offering congrats from the family. (Of note: we spent the first 2 nights in the Antique Rose room, which was also cozy, clean and comfy. It was up on the 3rd floor and not a peep was heard from the other guests in the house). The Dormer House itself could use some updating. A perk is that it is an easy walking distance to the beach and the center of town, where you can find cute shops and plenty of places to eat. read more

It was my first stay at the Dormer house this weekend. It really was a perfect stay! The staff is SO friendly and accommodating. The rooms are typical B&B style rooms but spotless!! The porch is wonderful, I never wanted to leave their porch swing! The breakfast was delicious. Eggs, toast, home fries and of course pork roll! Also some baked goodies. We didn't make it to tea time unfortunately. Upon checkout the staff offered us to use their showers, beach chairs and come for afternoon tea time since we would be in the Cape May area. I thought this was so nice of them! The location is also perfect, walking distance to the beach, shopping and good eats! I have nothing but good things to say and in the future wouldn't stay elsewhere! read more

We have been at two other B & B's down Cape May and this stay was the worst of the three. We arrived 10 minutes early and the room wasn't ready until after the check in time. Once we were permitted into our room, we had to climb over dirty laundry and garbage bags in the hallway. We scheduled our day so that we would have enough time for tea and realized we didn't need to rush back since tea was 15 minutes late but ended right on time so tea was only 45 min. By the way, there were still dirty dishes in the eating area from breakfast. Breakfast the next morning was as usual, 15 minutes late with an obnoxious and inappropriate story from the woman working there. All I have to say is thank God I didn't pay full price and got this with a groupon price. Very disappointing compared to other B&B's. read more

The only bed and breakfast we will stay at while visiting cape may. Haven't been in years bc of starting a family, but will never forget how truly amazing this place is. Dennis and Lucille are simple divine! They make you feel at home. They also serve/host an amazing afternoon tea and treat time as well as breakfast the next day. We loved that we could sit at our own table as it made having a romantic getaway much more cozier. The rooms are older in decor but definitely don't lack luxury and 21st century accommodations. My husband and I stay at the Dormer House annually to celebrate our anniversary. This past year was our forth time staying at the Dormer House, and it's just keep getting better and better. We have stayed in the Antique Rose and the Dormer Suite- both charming and delightful. The house is well kept, clean, and very inviting. The front porch is one of our favorite places on the property as we can watch the horse carriages pass by while enjoying tea and freshly home-baked goods- which all are to die for! The beach and Washington Square are only a short walk away. But what sets this B&B apart from all the others in Cape May is the amazing hospitality from the family that runs the Dormer House. Diana is a very accommodating and compassionate host, her husband Mike an exceptional chef and her mom, Lucille, is known for her baking. Needless to say, the dining experiences at the Dormer House were beyond exceptional. If you have a chance to visit beautiful Cape May, you need to stay at the Dormer House- you will leave relaxed and rejuvenated! read more

After a long miserable winter and way too many late nights at the office, a long weekend at The Dormer House was exactly what the doctor ordered. It's a charming beautiful old Victorian furnished comfortably and appropriately. The location cannot be beat! It's a 3 block walk from the ocean and a 3 block walk to the shops/restaurants on Washington Street. Lucille & Dennis, the owners, were friendly and helpful without being the slightest bit intrusive. The Commodore John Jacoby Suite was as charming in person as in the pictures but much lighter and even more spacious than anticipated. I booked the George Jacoby Suite for my wife's birthday. We arrived early and were allowed to check-in one hour earlier, i.e., 1 pm instead of 2 pm. The room was awesome, very clean, very charming and the best was that we could open up the whirlpool tub towards the bed room. Breakfast was served everyday between 8:30 am and 9:30 am and there was also a 1 hour afternoon teas session every day. The food was home made and very delicious. Moreover, there was a coffee maker and tea available 24h. The staff was in general very friendly but the B&B is relatively large and there is no family like atmosphere as in some smaller B&Bs (given you are looking for that, we did not mind). As already mentioned in other reviews, the dormer house is perfectly situated in 5 min walking distance from the beach, the pedestrian area, and most of the major restaurants. Last thing to mention, the huge porch with the horse carriages passing by. We just loved to hang out there and relax. We were extremely satisfied with our stay and will definitely come back! read more

My wife and I stayed here 6/3 to 6/5 and it was a wonderful experience. It was my Christmas gift (I like to go to Cape May in the summer but hear it's wonderful during the holiday months). It was a charming, warming, and relaxing experience. We arrived on Friday and the room (the Sharon room) was nice and comfy (smelled like the shore, very nice). My wife took a nap and I went to the Cape May brewery and that was a great time and the prices are spot on. The breakfasts were outstanding, I mean really well done and portions very good. The staff is quite engaging and understand what customer service is about. We have stayed at many B&B's and this is one of the best we will be returning!!! read more
