this is why it's called a butterfly

This is a cool little family-owned donut shop, not too far from the start of the 78. I used to stop here on my way to chemo, to get myself a treat before I didn't feel like eating for the day. They are known for making giant straight croissants, almost like a Pillsbury crescent on steroids. That isn't what brings me here, but it is close: a butterfly pastry. Made out of croissant layers, it's a rolled strip that is topped with sugar. It's a giant fresh-baked palmier cookie, with the outside being crunchy and the inner layers a little softer. And it's damn good. Go early, because I've never seen more than 2, and that's if you're lucky. People like me buy both of them, LOL. They have other donuts, and I'm sure they're good. But I'm here for the thing that I've never seen at another donut shop. Just sayin.

Experience: I came in, I was surprised at how little donuts they had left (9:30 AM). I thought they would have a ton but maybe it's because they open at 4:30 and maybe all the others were sold? I'm not sure. Taste: the taste was better than I expected! Masks: both staff members were wearing masks, yay!

Currently eating my maple bar and making some coffee at home. I couldn't wait to take a before picture. So GOOD!

Stopped in this morning at around 9ish In the morning. Wasn't too much of a donut selection left, which is why i left the 4 stars, but what I did get is very tasty. The bread of the donut itself is very moist and not dry at all. I picked out a mixed half dozen with card payment. Comes out to $6.90. I chose two maple bars (currently eating a maple bar), an old fashioned glazed, a chocolate glazed, a cinnamon crumble, and a sugar donut. The quality and thickness/flavor of the maple on the bar is so good! Not just a little flimsy layer! The store was clean (counters, floors, displays). The lady who attended me at the counter was very polite and made some polite banter with me. I did see the massive croissants but didn't get any. The only other small options in Escondido that are still open (like YumYums) aren't very good in my opinion in both service and donut quality. I'd much rather come here than a major chain like Dunkin' or Krispy Kreme. Will come back even after covid lockdown

Don't underestimate this little hole in the wall!

They charge 65 cents per transaction when using a card. Their donuts look old, very little selection.

Love their donuts, but you need to get there early to get the ones you want. Ladies running the place are always nice.

Very good donuts. Nothing fancy but they have the biggest croissants I have ever seen. The staff is very friendly and sweet.

The cashier let me know that the apple fritters I was looking at were fresh out of the oven and still warm, so I had to try those and they were the best apple fritters I've ever had! (Fresh is always better, of course). But we also tried their blueberry cake donuts, maple bars, glazed old fashions, and a few others and all were very soft, luscious, and just a perfect version of that type of donut. I have high standards for baked goods and it only took touching one of their classic sugar covered donuts and feeling just how pillowy soft it was to know they have an amazing rise and fantastic quality. I will be returning here from now on for all my donuts!! The shop is cute inside too. They have small tables for eating your purchase afterwards and offer coffee and tea. It doesn't feel like you're in the way here and the service was incredibly friendly and welcoming. No critiques whatsoever!

Unfortunately, his favorite, the Buttermilk Bar and Powdered Sugar were TOO DRY to even eat. We threw them in the trash. The Boston Cream was really good however. We had tried Nory's once before, he thought that he would give them a 2nd try. Waste of money.

The prices are steep. I ordered four donuts and six donut holes and the total came to over $20. There are donut shops nearby with better quality donuts that may not be as large (they're are regular/average size), but they're more reasonably priced. The setup is walk-up windows only, with a few seating options on the side near parking lot. Customer service was okay--not particularly warm, but not rude either. I don't enjoy leaving a review like this, but these days people are paying close attention to value. With how expensive everything has become, it's harder to justify spending this much on something like donuts. Don't get me wrong, if I have the luxury or feeling of splurging, there are plenty of specialty donut shops throughout California that fit that category. Unfortunately, this one just isn't for me, though it clearly still has a loyal customer base.
