So Michel's sits right in front of Woolies, which they so commonly do, and have all the usually cakes pies and sugary tasty things that I try to avoid. There coffee is decent, they never charge me for an extra shot and the service is just excellent. A frightening and eye opening emotion, this wanton desire for pastries. I said to my fellow compatriots, "Who wants some pastries?" Now, would you believe me if I told you that a pastry shop, or bakery, as they're also known, is very difficult to find in this upper north shore district? Well it's true. Up High Street I walked, turning onto Victoria Road, a quick detour down Penshurst and then back up Victoria to continue my way towards the centre of Chatswood. A thriving metropolis and definite pastry seller. Finally, halfway to the station, I found Sweet Delight, a small Vietnamese Bakery, and while the exterior might not scream Boulangerie or Stylish French Patisserie, once inside; the smell of fresh bread climbed my nasal peaks and made the ol' factory feel new again. I ordered a selection of snails, tarts and buns and had them all quartered to better distribute the goods amongst my peers. The price was nice and the pastries nicer, satisfying that strange and lingering urge to eat sweat sugary bread. There is a strong nostalgic feel to this place for me and I can only assume that it must be somewhat similar to a bakery from my childhood. Dine in is no better. 15 min for someone to clear a table (on a quiet day), a further 20 min for a menu, a further 15 min for someone to come back to take an order, a further 15 min for a Soda bottle to be brought to the table all while the wait staff ignore you and chat to each other.. and honestly, look miserable. I used to feel that those delicious, crispy meat pies were my reward for my good behaviour in church, but now I realise it was just my mother's way of feeding the family with decent, delicious food without having to go through the trouble of cooking it herself. For only $3.20 each, the bakery offers a wide selection of flavours to suit everyone's tastebuds. From original beef pies, to mushroom and gravy and the even more exotic curry pies, nothing beats the traditional Shepherd's pie, a pocket of pastry filled with steaming gravy and beef, topped with a potato lid and baked to crispy perfection.
