My best tips: -Come as soon as they open to beat the crowds. Like 10am latest if possible -BYO snacks and drinks and lots of water! -sunscreen a must and multiple times. You will get burnt. Maybe consider a water shirt to keep cool. -the float will be 3hrs + and can get packed in the river -water shoes such a plus Overall, love coming tubing here and always have a good time with friends!

Great time, quick service, river has lots of current and water was high. Only thing was that a guy in a kayak kept following us. Warning: dirt road like most tubing rental parking lot places. Drive slow. You can take your own tubes but don't fill them up until the bus drops you off by the river. They have like 10 air pumping stations.

    Everyone floating along the river.

Ive been to a few of these tubing rental places and so far this is my favorite one probably because they have a system to get you through to the next step and into the water quicker. When you arrive a person will let you know what lane to go in once you let him know what you're renting. If you have a tube already, you pay $15. If you need one its $22. Cooler tube rental $10. Their tubes have the headrest on them which is nice resting your head on while chilaxing on the river. You will get a wristband for each thing your rent with different colors. Keep those because you will need to show this when you are getting your tubes. Once you park you car, walk up to where the buses are and a bus will drive you to the starting point of where the fun begins. It stops when you see the Don's fish camp sign. *You will be on the river for at least 2 hours.

You'll get bracelets to show you are a paying customer.

Don's does it in the exact order that veteran toobers want: parking at the point of debarkation, shuttle to the launch site. Done in the reverse order, as with some other nearby rental places, you end up out of the water ready to go home, only to find yourself at the mercy of someone else's shuttle schedule, riding back to the parking lot in wet clothes. At Don's there's lots of parking available. Of course the earlier you arrive, the better, i.e. closer, spot you'll get. When the shuttle drops you at the river, there's plenty of air hoses to inflate your ride if you brought your own, and a virtual mountain of toobs to chose from if you didn't. Pick up a free mesh bag for the trash you'll accumulate along the way (cans, plastic bottles, wrappers, etc.), Don's wants to help keep the river clean. Proceed down the wide, rocked path to the river but watch your step once there. You'll think it looks shallow and easy but them there underwater rock ledges are slick!

    Chillin, drinking, floating!

We had a great time! We didn't mind the dirt road or the school bus. The tubs were nice and if you brought your own, there was air to fill them up. It was so relaxing. There was security floating around just keeping the river clean and making sure all was well. Everyone was really nice and there was even free crawfish at the end of the float. Great time and we will go again!

Great place to have lots of fun! Rent a tube and one for your ice chest! Bring the family! Shuttle drops you off at another side of the river and as you go tubing, you'll end up back where you got on the shuttle. Gets really busy so get there early! Bring some rope if you want to tie multiple tubes together otherwise you'll get lost in the sea of tubes. Music speakers allowed.

Drop off site. Dons Fish Camp is the BEST!

Fantastic parking, clean bathrooms, great quality tubes, staff is awesome and helpful. Float was so fun. Entire group had a blast and staff at drop off and pick up were so great. Helped with tubes, super efficient. Highly recommend!! Will only use this company when floating. They are by far the best.

Let me start by saying I can't swim and I was scared to go float the river with only one other person lol we chose this one because it was long (3 hours or so) you ended up back at your parking spot (you don't have to worry about how to get back to your truck) and you can rent everything here! Ride to the river was included! Had a blast it was a chill ride. Did not have to worry about flipping over. Don't have to worry about the current being to rough. It's exactly we were looking for! If you're looking for more of a thrill this is not it lol

Ask the Community - Don's Fish Camp

    Do they allowed soda cans?

    Yep!

Can you go tubing in January?

You can Camp. They usually make the rounds and collect fees. You may be alone. Usually a little if any traffic. They do notrun shuttles or rent tubes. Residents on the property are known to gather at times, especially in the evenings. This can be… Read more

How deep is this river? I can't swim very well would you recommend this river?

It depends on where you are on the river and whether or not water level is low, like now (may have to stand up to push your tube!). Some areas could be over 5 ft deep. Take a noodle!

What's the water level like today (06/18)?

There are a little low but you float the whole way. There is no walking on our float. It’s about a 3.5 hr long float

    Are there any restrooms?

Honestly Im not sure if it's port a potty but they do

Can you travel here via Uber?

    Yep!

Is this open for the season yet? Any COVID precautions?

I was there two weeks ago. Social distancing was being observed. Larger groups asked to disperse. Compliance was accepted. No shuttle to tube, but you are allowed to park and self shuttle. Camping was the biggest problem. A night of chaos and loud… Read more

What time does the last shuttle leave from dons?

    Must self shuttle

Is it kid friendly? Do they rent life vests?

Kid friendly as long as you get started before 11:30. We do not rent life vests

How is the water level currently?

It’s a little low but def no spots where you have to walk, you float the whole way. It’s currently about a 3.5 hour float.

Is this business still operating? I can't get ahold of anyone over there. Thank you.

Yes, they are usually responsive on their Facebook page so you might want to try that

They have several in the regional area but my review is for the Gruene location. The main takeaways for my post if you don't want to read (TLDR): 1. This location should NOT be advertised as a float - it is seriously very dangerous when the water is low, we all popped our tubes and had small injuries from the rocks - I am glad with my injuries being small - it could have been SOOO much worse 2. Aggressive turtles and water snakes everywhere 3. The entire float route is surrounded by private property so there is literally no way to exit unless you go to the end .. The day started out great - the Gruene location was nice, we did not pay for parking as others have mentioned (not sure why we didn't). The main complaint about the actual location where you sign in and get your tubes are the rest rooms. They were not clean and the water did not work. Also, the entire place was run by children which was very weird to me. There was no one over the age of 20 working the day (Sunday) we went. A kid that looked to be literally 13 was the one to help us into the river and didn't say a word to us- just looked at us and put the tubes in the water (which I understand - I was shy at that age as well). My main concern and the reason why I am posting is that this route (in my opinion) should NOT be used by this company as an advertised float. It was genuinely super dangerous. I have floated multiple times throughout Texas and have not encountered rocks and rapids like this. We got stuck multiple times on the rocks and it took us 3 hours to just get half way to the first exit. After the second set of rocks we were DONE. Our tubes had all popped and several of us had injuries (nothing super serious - bruises and cuts from the rocks - one girl hurt her back pretty badly and had spasms) . We called the company and asked for someone to pick us up (to which another child answered the phone). They offered to bring us new tubes - which they did. The kid that brought us the tubes told us we were two hours from the exit (which apparently was not correct). Because they wouldn't come pick us up and told me we had to tube down to the end where the exit is - we decided the best option was to call the non-emergency number for the Sheriff. She told us to call 911 to get more precise coordinates for our location - which we then did. An ambulance came and the EMT's found us and were able to escort us out of the back of people's homes (we did not want to trespass on these people's properties - also there were giant staircases we were unsure if the one girl with the back injury could even make it up). Everyone was fine, the EMT's dropped us off at the entrance to Rockin R - which we were then greeted by the location's owners. They told us it had been a misunderstanding and they didn't realize someone was injured - which I literally told them over the phone twice. After the confusion subsided, they did give us free passes to come back - which I won't be using. I understand these things happen and we did sign waivers - but the company should not be using this route. Someone will get seriously injured on these rocks one of these days. I guarantee it..

It's also perfect for first-timers, nervous swimmers, or anyone who likes their adventure with a side of peace of mind. The river is gorgeous, the wildlife is out for a cameo, and the float itself is just long enough to refresh your soul and restore your peace without taking your whole day. A few highlights: The bathrooms? Usually clean for public restrooms. Picnic benches so you can munch after your float - and I highly suggest bringing a picnic and lots of water - remember to also hydrate on the river! STAY HYDRATED. You can swim at the put-in area and at the end of the float. And the waterfall at the end? Don't panic -- it sounds scarier than it is, but trust me, it's the best part. Pure fun! Now, the people at the register... well, let's just say they're not exactly winning "hospitality team of the year." They don't always explain things, like the fact that the price you pay to float (with or without your own tube) does NOT cover the shuttle. That's kind of important information, folks. The shuttle fee actually covers rides all day long (huge win -- but only if you know to ask). Also if you're paying for and blowing up six tubes, then hand them a tiny cooler float? Yep, they'll want to charge you again. Come on, folks, throw a gal a bone (or a blast of air). I'd love to see a couple of actual adults helping at the desk to smooth things out -- because the float is absolutely worth it, and the experience deserves a front desk that matches the fun of the river. Bottom line: go float, enjoy the scenery, take the shuttle (seriously, don't forget to ask), and ride that waterfall with a big goofy grin. It's San Marcos at its best!

Our interactions with Outlaw River Rentals were indeed very smooth from drop off to pick up, everyone was friendly and professional, plus there was very helpful guidance about river conditions. This was the experience we had hoped for last year. No fault of ORR, the area is in the midst of a drought which meant drop off and pick up were from the boat ramp under the highway, because there is little current in the river. Upstream is nicer scenery but does require carrying the boat over a weir (small dam), while downstream the scenery was riverside suburbs (maybe more natural further downstream). In more normal conditions the trip involves drop off here but then riding the current downstream to a take out.
