Did we wait for an hour to get a tube? Yes. Was it totally worth it? Absolutely! This was some of the most fun we had on our trip. The water felt incredible and the scenery was beautiful. Note that you cannot bring cans or bottles. We brought drinks in reusable tumblers.

    Tubing the Comal River

We used Texas Tubes for tubing the Comal River in New Braunfels. We picked a chilly overcast day with water that was barely flowing, so we had to walk certain sections and paddle. There is a fun tube chute section. The tube rental was $25 with a shuttle service from the end back to the start. Most of us got tubes with bottoms, but they also have tubes without bottoms. Because the flow was so slow, I think tubes without bottoms would have been the better choice since we had to paddle quite a bit. There are restrooms in the parking lot.

We opted for tubes with bottoms - but Texas tubes also offers tubes with no bottom.

Absolutely love this business! Family friendly. On site parking and complementary lockers available. Super friendly staff. $25 for 1 trip down the river - takes around 2 - 2&1/2 hrs You get to go down the New Braunfels tube shoot - so so fun! They pick you up in a bus right by where you exit the river, and the ride back was so much fun - shoutout to bus driver Bob and his killer playlist. Helpful hints: - Alcohol is allowed but "disposable containers" (i.e. beer cans) are banned on the river. So just bring a Yeti cup and you are good to go. Same applies to food packaging - if you plan on bringing food (which in my opinion isn't necessary) just put it in Tupperware containers. - Bring your sunscreen to reapply - Bring a water bottle - it definitely gets hot! If you are planning to float the river I could not recommend this tube rental service more!

Website notes parking is included, when we arrived we were directed to additional parking where we had to pay additional fee. Place was easy to locate, has to give license, and jumped on the river. Day was busy but great! Only other issue was friend left her license and had so much of an issue trying to get it back she just went through the State of Texas for another...not ideal.

The end of the rice how much air I had left.

If I could give negative stars I would. When we (group of 9-10) went through the first shoot. I noticed a hole in my tube. At no point did Texas Tubes say to call them this is my 3rd year of going through Texas tubes. I like them because they're tight on the river. But i personally didn't have phone service after the first shuttle / fast water run. And I went the rest of the way -beside a 10-20 min brake on my friends float-. I would not recommend just because they never said to call. After 4 years. Multiple groups going at a time. Never have said to call on the way.

Beautiful day tubing on the Comal river with Texas Tubes

It's all about customer service. Others will give great reviews about the tubing experience, wait time, bus ride back, etc. All of those are good, but I want to highlight how the staff at Texas Tubes go above-and-beyond. When you rent tubes, they ask you to leave an ID behind as security. Well, like a dingbat - I forgot to pick up my ID after we were done tubing for the day a couple weekends ago. I called them as soon as I realized my ID wasn't in my wallet. The person who answered the phone went immediately to their lost-and-found, confirmed she had my ID, and offered to mail it to me. Within a few days, I saw it in my mailbox, happily re-united! I appreciate this level of service, and especially the rapid turnaround.

Getting ready to float the river with Texas Tubes!

We floated with Texas Tubes for a bachelorette party and they were very accommodating for our large group and gave amazing customer service! All the staff was very nice and helpful, and made our float very enjoyable!

I would def recommend Texas Tubes, they are fairly fast, friendly and the environment and area is superbly clean, from the restrooms to the parking lot, to the front desk and even the shuttle bus. Everyone was very nice and gave us step by step of the process. Didn't take long to get the shuttle back after the river ended. Great time!

We tube the river annually as a girls trip, usually late summer so it's not crowded and you aren't being blasted by everyone's music. I will admit that this isn't our go to place (it was closed for the season) and they suggested this place. This place was easy enough to find and there was free parking available. We checked in, she asked for my ID, I gave her my keys and she gave me tokens to get my tubes. Tubes at this location cost $20 per tube (with or without a bottom) and you only get one trip down the river. If you want to go again, it cost $7 however you have to be back in the river before 4:30 giving you time to get down the river and back on the shuttle before they close. Forget to bring a cooler, ice, or need a jug for your drinks, they will sell it to ya! Getting into the river at this location can be a little tricky. They have step ladders (like at the pool) so you are having to put your tube in the water and basically plop back into it. Helps if you have someone to hold your tube. I was also told that they no longer provide string to tie tubes together, so if that's something you want to do, bring some twine. With that said, over the years things on the river have changed. This year we were told that we can no longer take cans on the river, no zip lock bags, no styrofoam, no plastic bags as well as other changes. If caught with said items it will result in a $219 fine from the park rangers. So get you a yeti or any other container to put your drinks in, put your snacks in Tupperware and keep floating! All of the staff were really nice. Only draw back was getting on the shuttle and having heavy metal screaming at me for the ride back. Was told that they were closing earlier this season due to repairs being made on the river.

Ask the Community - Texas Tubes

Is the water cold now in March? When does it get warm?

It's 72 degrees all year round, we went 3/14 and the water was brisk but not freezing. And the air temp was high of 82. Lots of people tubing, including families. I think as long as the outside temp is 80+ it'll be a good time.

How much is it if you bring your own tube?

    25$ per person

They have several in the regional area but my review is for the Gruene location. The staff are really fun and helpful (you know like when you're getting out and fall on your rear and they help you out of the water). Rental rates are fair and the tubes are clean.

I will start by saying, I don't entirely blame the business for what happened during our float, and…read morethey did try to remedy it by giving us free passes to come back - or to use another location. The main takeaways for my post if you don't want to read (TLDR): 1. This location should NOT be advertised as a float - it is seriously very dangerous when the water is low, we all popped our tubes and had small injuries from the rocks - I am glad with my injuries being small - it could have been SOOO much worse 2. Aggressive turtles and water snakes everywhere 3. The entire float route is surrounded by private property so there is literally no way to exit unless you go to the end .. The day started out great - the Gruene location was nice, we did not pay for parking as others have mentioned (not sure why we didn't). The main complaint about the actual location where you sign in and get your tubes are the rest rooms. They were not clean and the water did not work. Also, the entire place was run by children which was very weird to me. There was no one over the age of 20 working the day (Sunday) we went. A kid that looked to be literally 13 was the one to help us into the river and didn't say a word to us- just looked at us and put the tubes in the water (which I understand - I was shy at that age as well). My main concern and the reason why I am posting is that this route (in my opinion) should NOT be used by this company as an advertised float. It was genuinely super dangerous. I have floated multiple times throughout Texas and have not encountered rocks and rapids like this. We got stuck multiple times on the rocks and it took us 3 hours to just get half way to the first exit. After the second set of rocks we were DONE. Our tubes had all popped and several of us had injuries (nothing super serious - bruises and cuts from the rocks - one girl hurt her back pretty badly and had spasms) . We called the company and asked for someone to pick us up (to which another child answered the phone). They offered to bring us new tubes - which they did. The kid that brought us the tubes told us we were two hours from the exit (which apparently was not correct). Because they wouldn't come pick us up and told me we had to tube down to the end where the exit is - we decided the best option was to call the non-emergency number for the Sheriff. She told us to call 911 to get more precise coordinates for our location - which we then did. An ambulance came and the EMT's found us and were able to escort us out of the back of people's homes (we did not want to trespass on these people's properties - also there were giant staircases we were unsure if the one girl with the back injury could even make it up). Everyone was fine, the EMT's dropped us off at the entrance to Rockin R - which we were then greeted by the location's owners. They told us it had been a misunderstanding and they didn't realize someone was injured - which I literally told them over the phone twice. After the confusion subsided, they did give us free passes to come back - which I won't be using. I understand these things happen and we did sign waivers - but the company should not be using this route. Someone will get seriously injured on these rocks one of these days. I guarantee it..

Their website was helpful with some of the questions I had and all other questions were answered when I got there. Our group was around 16 deep and we were the first customers of the day. The staff here was very patient with us and got us situated smoothly. There's a fair amount of parking out front and they are really good about maximizing the space. They do have bathrooms available as well as a place to rinse off if you would like. They do have items to purchase for your tubing needs like rope, bungee, etc. One thing we assumed we had on our tubes were ropes, but that they did not so we struggled a little bit trying to stay together as a group. A little upselling would have been appreciated in this instance. Once you are all paid up and ready to go, they bring around one of their shuttles that pulls a trailer for your tubes. We packed tight into that little bus and off we went. Before heading out, they gave us a run down on how things operate and rules to abide by. We were given specific instructions on what to expect and landmarks to remember when it was time to get off the river to where we parked. There are different float options depending on what you're looking for as far as how chill or how much time time you want to spend on the river. We chose a float that was estimated to be 4 hours with a little bit of chill and thrill. It really all depends on the flow of the river. This review is based on the company that facilitates your float trips and not so much a review of the actual experience. This company did a great job and I would use them again if I ever decide to float the Guadalupe again.

Their entry point process was pretty straightforward. You sign a disclaimer and pay for either the rental of the tube $25+ or pay for using your own tube from home for $25+. I think we did the 4 hour float option. If you rent you do get the option of picking a tube that has a bottom to it, which can be used for coolers, or to prevent your back from scraping on the rocks. They give you a free fishnet bag for trash that you can rope tie to your tube, or put inside your cooler. There is a mini store where you can purchase items you forgot or didn't think to bring. They have a "no glass, cans only" policy, which I think is pretty standard. When we were finally ready. You hop on their school bus with a hitch out back with the tubes piled high and get some rules to live by. Including that if you hear sirens to get out of the river immediately it means there is a surge coming. Also there is a damn drop off, and a bridge you aren't suppose to go past before getting out. Honestly, while I appreciate the safety session, I wish I had been able to read and study the rules beforehand, so I felt more confident in remembering all of them before embarking? If all the rules they say on the bus are posted on their website, it was my fault for not reviewing them before arrival. We got out at our dropoff point where you make your way down some steps with your tube in hand and get started in the river. If you bring coolers be sure to get a bottom tube and bring some rope to strap yourself to it. The water was chilly. The journey started out pretty ok. But then we go to what they call the "damn" or really a drop off point, like a 2 foot straight drop. It got kinda hairy since you have to get out of your tube and step on slick rocks with tube in hand and make your way further down the river where the current picks up even more, step down from the drop off with the current flowing. I suppose if you are use to it, it doesn't seem that challenging, but if you aren't and are with a big group, with multi coolers it's a little challenging to figure out. Make sure to bring rope for the coolers and tubes if you can. Some parts have a strong current other parts are less. Then you travel down for a while sometimes getting caught by trees, debris, the sides of the marsh, or rocks. Eventually, you get into the neighborhood area where folks are parked outside their houses or tents, playing music, watching the floaters go by. Our group got separated since we weren't all tied together. At the time, the weather was pretty dreary and it rained on and off the entire time. So it made for a cold experience. Don't forget to wear your water shoes for the rocks. If the sun had come out, it likely would have been better. I think I will find a more gentle and relaxing float experience for next time.

It's also perfect for first-timers, nervous swimmers, or anyone who likes their adventure with a side of peace of mind. The river is gorgeous, the wildlife is out for a cameo, and the float itself is just long enough to refresh your soul and restore your peace without taking your whole day. A few highlights: The bathrooms? Usually clean for public restrooms. Picnic benches so you can munch after your float - and I highly suggest bringing a picnic and lots of water - remember to also hydrate on the river! STAY HYDRATED. You can swim at the put-in area and at the end of the float. And the waterfall at the end? Don't panic -- it sounds scarier than it is, but trust me, it's the best part. Pure fun! Now, the people at the register... well, let's just say they're not exactly winning "hospitality team of the year." They don't always explain things, like the fact that the price you pay to float (with or without your own tube) does NOT cover the shuttle. That's kind of important information, folks. The shuttle fee actually covers rides all day long (huge win -- but only if you know to ask). Also if you're paying for and blowing up six tubes, then hand them a tiny cooler float? Yep, they'll want to charge you again. Come on, folks, throw a gal a bone (or a blast of air). I'd love to see a couple of actual adults helping at the desk to smooth things out -- because the float is absolutely worth it, and the experience deserves a front desk that matches the fun of the river. Bottom line: go float, enjoy the scenery, take the shuttle (seriously, don't forget to ask), and ride that waterfall with a big goofy grin. It's San Marcos at its best!
