Finding a good mechanic can feel like hunting for unicorns. I'm reminded of that Seinfeld episode where George says, 'They told me I need a new Johnson rod. I guess I've got to get one of those!' My wife and I used to go to a shop in Silver Lake. The customer service was great, but after a while, it started to feel like every visit cost us a few hundred dollars. We couldn't shake the feeling that we were being overcharged. Then I found Chris and Don's Auto on Yelp, and we've been loyal customers ever since. After several years of taking our cars here, I can confidently say their work and service are excellent. Chris' quotes are fair--he's even come in more competitive than others when we've shopped around for big jobs. Recently, I had my car's smog check done at a different shop, and they told me my rear brake pads were nearly worn down to the rotors. They offered to replace them on the spot, but I decided to wait and have Chris check it out at my next oil change. Turns out, my brakes were fine. It's just another reminder that honest mechanics aren't a given, and I'm grateful to have found one in Chris and Don's Auto. read more

Honest people who are very helpful. This is my 3rd time here, and this will be my go-to spot for the foreseeable future. Brought the car here after Toyota dealership near my house quoted me $2600 for repairs they said were necessary for the safety of the car (one of which was corroded brakes) and $3400 to improve the suspension (on my 2012 Prius lol). The folks at Don's checked out my car and said the brakes were normal wear and tear; no corrosion and no other issues with the car. (This also aligns with my last tire rotation 2 months ago where Firestone also told me my brakes were fine.) They did recommend changing the brakes soon since they've got 20% of life left, so I'll be back for that later. Anywho, these guys are awesome. Great shop. read more

BEWARE! When I was laid up with a broken leg, I loaned my car to a friend who ran all the oil out of it. Don's Auto said there was nothing that could be done, the engine had to be replaced. After paying $6,500.00 to replace the engine with a rebuilt used one (and replacing the battery), I got the car back without the turbo working. They said it just had to be driven 50 miles and the turbo would start working again. Not only did it not start working again, but the cooling fan was not reattached correctly, stopped working and the engine overheated. While they were fixing that, they damaged the air conditioner and electrical system. When I took it back, they said it was just a coincidence that all these things happened within 3 days of them replacing the engine. And it would be another $2,700.00 to fix these coincidental malfunctions. They used to be a good company, but their top mechanics have all left. Their work has become substandard at best, and they're more than happy to rip you off. Total scammers. read more

Chris did a great job finding out what was causing the noise on my Nissan Sentra... he took a video and showed me exactly where the noise was coming from and was able to repair it at no cost to me! Screw this place. Total rip off! Over paid for a half ass job. Had them fix my car bc it was backfiring. Got sent to their carburetor specialist who suggested a compression text, when I told Don's Auto this, they took it upon themselves to do the compression test with out telling me it would be $125. Then they did a $450 tune up, and returned my car to me at 70% still having issues, STILL DRIVING LIKE SHIT. I talked to the manager Chris about this and he argued that the car is running perfectly and that I had to pay an additional $150 to have them look at it again. Which made zero sense to me, clearly they didn't do the job right, why would I have to pay more?! He eventually told me to bring it in and they'd look at it, but why bother. I paid $550 for them to fix it right the first time and they couldn't even do that. I ended up paying a different mechanic to finish the job they couldn't. When I asked the mechanic what was wrong with the car he said the last mechanics who worked on it, (Don's Auto) didn't finish the job correctly. Also Chris your mechanics scratched my brand new paint job while working on it. Thanks a bunch dude. That's more money I'll have to spend for your shop's incompetence. I will be sure to let people know the type of service I received here. read more

I don't recommend this place, look somewhere else for a trustworthy service. I needed to replace brake pads on my BMW X1, pretty routine job. They first tried to talk me into replacing the brake rotors, even though I knew they were perfectly fine, so I declined. They replaced the pads only but failed to replace the brake sensors, which you always do when changing pads (I would not think any service shop can skip that part!), which I realized later being unable to reset the car computer warning. The car required to be taken into the shop for sensor replacement which I had to to somewhere else, and obviously had to pay extra for the whole ordeal. I would not trust them again even with a simple task. read more

I've gotten my breaks fixed, new rotors, routine oil change, new tires, AC. I also plan on returning for my next oil change. Their team is amazing and Chris is very professional and personable. I would say that the pricing is fair, which I was a little shocked over since it is located on York Blvd in the middle of all the restaurants and trendy shops ( prices tend to be steep in this area). They're amazing! Unfortunately I bought a used car with a lot of issues, and took it to a bunch of terrible shops until I found Don's. I've been to so many other mechanics who tried to oversell me on stuff or take advantage of me knowing very little about cars, and nothing like that ever happens here. This is now my permanent mechanic from now on. Chris helped me and gave me the best service I've ever received from a mechanic, ever. I went in for a routine oil change and Chris hooked it up! He topped off my all my fluids, refilled my tires with air, changed my filters, turned off my "check engine" light and a bunch of other stuff for no additional cost. The service was speedy too. I took my car in and got called back to pick it up in about an hour. Chris also did an inspection of the car and politely let me know of a few things that need tuning up down the road. He did not try to sell me on anything, rather just inform me. I'll be coming back to Don's from now on! read more

My husband and I moved to the west coast from the east coast a year ago. We brought our beloved 12 year old Prius with us. It's a rock solid car with low miles which rarely needs repair. The only problem was we did not have a trusty mechanic, so we faced the possibility of entrusting our car and our wallet to the wrong garage. Happily for us my husband happened upon Don's Auto Repair as we were staying in Highland Park during our house hunt. He and Chris, one of the owners, hit it off instantly. I have never gotten such excellent service at an auto repair shop before. Chris goes above and beyond to be courteous and helpful, providing trustworthy recommendations and never ripping you off. Chris makes you feel like part of the family -- he showed me photos of the old owners and the history of the business. I'm moving out of the area and I still plan on bringing my car back to Don's. 10 years in Highland Park and nothing but trouble trying to find a honest and qualified mechanic, only to find liars and idiotic mechanics - once had to redo the rack and pinion steering 3X (Abduls Automotive - Fig and Ave 50). Well so far I like what I got at Don's. Better price than what Google told me it would be - and done in 4 hours (WOW!). The way it was I thought I would have to pay double and lose the car for 3 days at least! If it stays the way I expect Chris and the guys there will have a customer for as long as the California DMV allows me to drive! read more

Sad to say, but I have come to believe that I've been getting ripped off here for the past 1 1/2 years! My car always needed expensive repairs, but it was a '98 Volvo. Then it got totaled on the 101 & replaced w/ a Nissan Altima, 2002, rebuilt transmission. Brought her in for service, had some AC issues. Told that I needed to have the AC fixed for $450 & that some of my belts & hoses also needed to be replaced for another $450. Just didn't have the money at the time. Then one of my roommates brought her car there & she was given a list of needed repairs....but, her husband knew that over half of the items had been recently replaced! That set off my alarm & I took my car in to Palmer Auto & Tire. Yup, I've got AC issues, some slow leak somewhere & Jeff put in freon w/ a dye to figure out where, saying my hoses were recently replaced. All other belts & hoses are fine!!!!!! Yes, they're very pleasant at Don's, but that relationship's going to cost you! read more
