When a friend first suggested Donny's for lunch, my first thought was burgers and chips and all sorts of American grease. Then I thought "Since when did that come to Australia?!". Thankfully I'd just gotten my vowels mixed up and Denny's had NOT arrived on our shores, but instead we were headed to a Chinese restaurant nearby.
Donny's is an unexpected restaurant located in the loft of The Landmark Hotel, serving an interesting combo of Cantonese shared dishes, bistro faves and Hong Kong style street food. If you can't decide between steak with chips, stir fries and tofu hotpots, or curry fishballs this isn't the place to go, because you'll never decide.
The food comes out super fast - I think we got all of our 11 dishes in about as many minutes even with 2 other big tables and a few smaller parties in the place. Everything was fresh and piping hot, just enough flavour to satisfy but not so much that those delicate Cantonese palates would be overwhelmed. Though the dishes were good, nothing was amazing - a restaurant my Hong Long raised parents would be satisfied with enough to not complain about in the car ride home but maybe wouldn't rave to their friends about. Then again, I didn't get to try the curry fish balls. Or the steak and chips. read more
