I mean, I'm not actually a criminal in any way that matters (though I have been known to steal the odd glance at a pretty girl.... Oh god, even I thought that was awful) My driving licence has been liberated from my back pocket by some crazed protester who thinks they should be returned to the wild... or just stolen, I'm not sure which. The nice Garda gave me forms to fill in, patted me on the head and tells me not to keep valuables in my back pocket. I immediately removed the antique grandfather clock I had been keeping there and put it somewhere safe. We live in donnybrook and saw our elderly neighbour knocked down by a driver who broke the pedestrian lights. Our neighbour is a bit simple minded and just let the driver go. We called the guards and explained he broke the lights and hit him. That the car could have been stolen or he could have been drunk. She didn't want the reg or make or even our number. She said she didn't want our opinion and that we were abusive and bothering her. We explained the man could have hit his head and be injured. That the driver may hit someone else etc. She simply didn't care and hung up. We called back and she refused to put us on to someone in charge. Absolutely fucking disgrsceful. If that man hit someone else that night or if our neighbour god forbid didn't wake up the next day. What would they say? That we were bothering them. No crime was committed apparently. read more

This art-deco Garda Station would look unbelievable on a foggy night with the muffled sound of screaming coming from within. It is so atmospheric that it would put the fear a' jeebus into any 19th Century cape and monocle type villain. Check it out in my photo, it's amazing. I belong to Friends of the Grand Canal - a volunteer group that has been cleaning the canal for the past 12 years. I just came in from a 2 hour clean up. The amount of rubbish - drinks cans, vodka and wine bottles, fast food detritus and plastic bags was disgusting. This goes on every week-end, and this is St. Patrick's Day. A simple solution would be for two gardai to walk up and down the canal on a regular basis and issue on the spot fines to the people who are flouting public health laws and littering the paths and roads. It's not rocket science - and it would clean up the Grand Canal. read more

I came from the USA and met a Garda Vincent Hourican today. What a nice guy, who pointed out where I should go and gave me advice about my stay. He even talked about his ties to the US (Berkley, California). We talked about the profession and how long he has been in service with the community. I think the conversation lasted about 10 minutes, where it was more us than him breaking it off since we were trying to get to the Dublin Jail Tour. He gave me a Garda replica badge as well. We exchanged business cards and we went on our way. They do APPEAR intimidating...as they should! But a second into the contact and I felt like we were friends for years. Thanks again Garda Hourican!
