What a wonderful little shop run by a fantastic woman and man. It has an eclectic mix of sundries: gifts, chains for your car, food, drinks, wine, etc. I had just been kicked off 80 in order to put on chains. I own some but never installed them before. I am highly independent and decided to do it myself. 2 hours later, I had just finally got them on, and drove less than 100 yards before running into this place while on my way back toward 80W. I needed caffeine by then as I had been driving for 8 or 9 hours, and pulled in. I LOVE unsweetened tea and they had something called Tea of a Kind (it's organic too) that she introduced me to. I drive 3000 miles a month, stop at a lot of places for drinks, and drink A LOT of different types of tea, but this was the most novel drink I've ever come across regarding tea. The tea infuses into the water when you open it. That was pretty nifty. I didn't think the tea looked dark enough after I cracked open mine, and in order to check I'd done it properly, she opened one herself, (it had been fine, but if you get one of these, just crack the top open instead of opening it fully) and I thought it was really cool of her to verify the quality of my purchase. I bought three of them, including the one she opened to check for me. We were chatting during this time and I mentioned how it had taken me 2 hours to put the chains on my front tires, how I was soaked and feeling stupid for previously judging/making fun of, my brother, dad & (step)mom for paying people to put them on in the past, and how the chains themselves felt awful while driving the 100 yards here. She looked out and immediately was like, "You have those on way too loose." She gave me a discount for having put them on myself already, but sold me an adjuster and went out and tightened my chains and put the adjusters on tightly. All in 5 minutes. She showed me what she was doing and gave me detailed instructions on how to take them off (so much easier to take them off!!!) Put me to shame in the best way possible, as by now I just wanted to get on with the rest of my 4 + hours of driving. Her fellow co-owner joined us briefly and seemed to be the same type of charming, compassionate, funny, easy-going helpful soul as Karen, but he had to help a customer pretty immediately thereafter, so that was pretty much the limit of our interaction. These are great people. I felt less mentally stressed after meeting them, which was really needed, as I was about to lose it. Oh, and that tea had me going all the way home to San Rafael, CA, after only chugging 1 of them, plus sipping at a half of another, which is pretty amazing since I was dead tired, and considering that I had been concerned about it's potency. read more

What a wonderful man and woman!! We were like other reviewers clicked off from I80 because the bad weather on the way from SF to Reno. We founded this store when we were looking for the snow chain. Fred and Karen were super friendly, helpful and honest. Fred told me that we didn't need a snow chain if we were just going to Reno. Instead of going back to San Francisco because the bad weather. Fred saved our plan that we could continue go to Reno. They really make our day! Thank you guys! We will come back to visit your store someday. Take care! You're the people we could trust. read more

Located across the street from the Donner Lake Village Resort, this place may look small in size and inventory but if you forgot to pick up hot dogs or need another bottle of wine and don't care to trek all the way over to Safeway and deal with a store teeming with people, this place will save your sanity! Run by a nice no nonsense team, I appreciated having them around!! read more

Great place to get what you forgot to bring or didn't know you would need when at Donner Lake, Sugar Bowl or up by or on the Pacific Crest Trail. Very friendly and very kind. I went in for some first aid supplies that they didn't carry but had on hand in their house and they patched me up. Now that is the kind of people I want to give my business! read more

What a wonderful place. The shop is located in the "old Donner Lake Fire Station" across the street from the Donner Lake Village. The shop has a little bit of everything you might need - food, ice cream, beer, wine and ice. It is the only shop in the area that has Donner Lake logo wear. Because it is a small business, they are very accommodating in making logo wear if they don't have it already made or if you need a different size or style. I found a tee shirt that I liked, but not in my size and I wanted the logo on the back. They were able to find my size in stock and printed the logo on the back ..... All in ONE day!! I returned a few days later to get a hoody sweatshirt for my granddaughter, but they did not have her size. They gladly offered to order one and would have it ready in three days. The team that runs the shop are great - friendly, helpful people who enjoy what they do. Great customer service! I highly recommend dropping in when you are at the "Lake". read more

This is a great little store with pretty much everything you need in a pinch plus a whole lot of personality. These is the only spot that has specifically Donner Lake swag. The owners make it themselves - mugs, canvas photos, magnets, etc. They are really nice and super accommodating. If you are looking for any gifts, souvenirs, cold sodas, snacks, bait or a friendly spot to visit for little knick knacks, this is your spot. They are conveniently located just across from the Donner Lake Village Resort. read more

The shop owner and his wife, Karen, are totally like angels to us. We were out in the evening to drive on Donner pass road to get back to our hotel to Kingvale. Right past the store we found out all roads were closed due to white out condition, then we stopped at the shop to ask for directions. They immediately told us there was no way to go through and we had to find a hotel room for the night. Since our cell phones didn't have signals, they helped to find a couple of local hotels and called from their phones to ask for a room for us. Eventually they helped us to find a room for that night. Without their help, we will have no where to go. With two young kids, that would be nightmare. They saved us. Really appreciate the store and wish their store can be there for ever. read more

Being forced off the highway we found ourselves (along with many others) at Donner Lake Gift Shop trying to purchase snow chains. The owners Fred and Karen were doing there best to field questions, sell chains and install the same. The quality of service we received there was unbelieveable and served with a smile and an sympithetyic understanding of our concerns. They sold me chains and Fred tried to install them but they didn't fit. He would not accept any money for ALL of the trouble they had with the sale. Fred gave us directions to the next shop and sent us about our way. Even though we left without a product. That was the the most satisfying retail experience I have ever experienced. I can't wait to pass that way again as they will be a definite stop for us just to say thank you for the kindness and understanding. God bless people like Karen and Fred. read more

Like other reviewers, I got kicked off 80 W during a snowstorm due to not having snow chains. They wanted $70 for two chains if I installed them myself. There was no way I was about to try that alone at night in the middle of a snowstorm after driving for two-and-a-half days on four hours of sleep while suffering from a pinched nerve in my back. So, for another $30, the female co-owner installed them in the messy conditions. After another 40 miles of driving or so, I made it over Donner Pass unscathed. Problematically, however, I could not find anyone alongside the freeway to take the chains off. So, I called the male co-owner and he gave me detailed instructions on how to remove them over the phone. What a life saver. read more
