This was one of the few restaurants in Indiana that I hadn't tried, so I decided to give it a go recently. Upon entering I was greeted immediately and was offered a booth table. My first impression was that the place needed some updates. The booths were well worn... not the most comfortable to sit in. The table tops were very sticky. Not like dirty sticky, but sticky from cleaning solution residue. I had placed my phone on the table and had to tug to pick it up due to the stickiness. The menus appeared as though they had seen better days. They were faded, had water marks, and crinkly. Definitely not what I expected to see. Adding to it all, behind the bar, there is a psychedelic-esque light that rotated on the bottles of alcohol.... it was very out of place for a more upscale Italian restaurant. Ok... on to the food. For an appetizer we ordered the bruschetta. It came out very quickly. It was presented with small slices of toasted white Italian bread topped with cubed tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Was it good? Yeah. I'll give it that. Was it the best bruschetta I ever had? Not a chance. I would've preferred to at least have the cheese melted. Next up were salads. They were just your typical run-of-the-mill salads with spring mix greens. For my entree I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. My dish came topped with mushrooms, peas, and ham. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to order all the toppings, but I decided to give it a go. Was the dish good? It was ok. Far from the best Alfredo dish I've ever had. I can say though I don't particularly care to have mushrooms, ham, and peas on my Alfredo again though... that was weird. I much prefer the Alfredo sauce at Spaghetti Benders up the street or Olive Garden... but that's just me. Now let's talk about prices. For the life of me I couldn't justify why a dish of fettuccine Alfredo cost $15. Bit pricey if you ask me. My friend ordered the chicken Marsala and it was $18. Way over priced for the area. Positive note: Our waitress was great and very attentive. At the end, the owner(?) came and asked us if everything was ok. I thought that was a nice touch for him to ask. The food was excellent! The waiter,Chad, is the best waiter in your facility. He was very professional but not stuffy. He allowed time between courses, very attentive. My concern is that when we arrived we were very kindly greeted; but then very disappointed in the treatment we received from the staff. We stated that we had reservations for 5:00 for four people. We stated our name; we were asked if our phone # was a number that was not ours. Then we were told there was no reservation for us. The person that was quizzing us wanted then to seat us right inside the door. We refused to sit there. Then she said very loudly, which I am sure everyone could hear her, "put them at table 5 and I will figure it out." We were seated and then Chad saved the evening with his kind and professional attentiveness. At the end of our dinner, Chad came to our table and said, "I have been instructed to tell you that the people that were to sit at this table are standing at the door waiting." We ate there last evening. Our server was having an off night and apologized several times throughout our meal but forgot to bring us silverware, then forgot to bring us bread. The salad was good and fresh, and once we got the bread that was good and had a nice dipping oil. Three of us ordered spaghetti and meatballs, which was expensive ($15) and none of them liked it and didn't eat much of their entree. We waited a long time for our food because the waiter ordered the wrong thing for me and had to wait for my order to be cooked. I got the shrimp and crab stuffed ravioli, which was tasty ... however, it was $17 for 5 ravioli! We were never offered any sort of compensation for our long wait because of the order mixup or any of the other blunders. Overall, very disappointing meal. read more

This is the go-to restaurant for me when I come to Indiana! It is an all around good, rustic, and romantic classic Italian restaurant, which are few and far between. Every time I had come here previously I ordered the Italian Sampler, three nice portions of different pastas and parmigiana dishes of your choice out of a relatively large selection. My mom had also ordered the same (but a different three) and you can see her review below under Lisa C., but we both decided to get something different this time. The bread was served with sun-dried tomato in oil which was both sweet and savory and was a great alternative to the usual oil and pepper. After eating a classic bowl of wedding soup, fresh salads, and a delicious appetizer of artichoke crab dip, cheesy, zesty, tangy, with quality lump crab and tender flavorful artichoke hearts and served with crostini, came our main dishes. I had ordered pesto gnocchi which was an unusual choice for me as I grow bored of pesto quickly. This was no exception but that is not to say that the dish wasn't excellent. The gnocchi were a perfect consistency, soft, firm, and not too potato-y. I could tell that the ingredients in the pesto were very fresh from the strong taste that could be described as nothing else but green. The walnuts in the dish added a layer of sweetness and was a nice variation in texture. My mom ordered a chicken under the grass salad which she felt was lacking something but was overpowering in that the vinegar in the dressing was very strong. I am giving the restaurant 4 s in this review compared to my mom's 5 from the first time we went there for 3 reasons only. 1. We did not enjoys these meals as much as we liked others we've gotten there. 2. We were sat under a strong blowing ceiling fan. 3. Our server was unsure of themselves and misconstrued things we said many times. Experiences differ visit to visit but overall this is my favorite restaurant in Indiana and one of my favorite Italian restaurants anywhere and I highly recommend it. If you want to make a night of it I suggest that you look to see if there are any events or shows on the IUP campus to go to after dinner. read more

The Zuppa di Cozze e Vongole Scoppiate - fresh black mussels and topneck clams steamed in a flavorful marinara broth - Served with crostini. Was passable, the crostini had a nice texture, the broth was over-salted. The Quattro Stagione Pizza was soggy, leading me to believe their ovens aren't hot enough. I asked for it to be heated a few minutes longer, but there was no crisping of the wet crust. Finally, the mushrooms on the pizza were canned and rubbery. I should note that I only sampled 3 items, but all 3 were misses. I will not be returning anytime in the near future. read more

In town for business and had an enjoyable dinner. Service was good and food was hot. prompt and delicious. I had the Gnocchi in pesto and my boss had the Cannelonni. He practically licked his bowl. I had to stop before I ate the very generous portion of Gnocchi. Salad, Pasta, glass of wine and tip for for $25. If I wasn't traveling on business I could have eaten the pasta for lunch the next day. Only minor suggestion is the bread was not up to the standards of the food. Very good service, pretty ambiance, and good food. I got the sampler platter ($14.99) and with that I got a soup, salad, some ravioli, some penne, and eggplant Parmesan (there was a list to choose from, those are the three I chose.) My boyfriend's mom got the Cod and said it was very good. The portion size for the fish dishes is a little small but you get a soup, a salad, and a side of spaghetti. So not bad! My boyfriend's father got some sort of veal Parmesan with ham and swiss, I don't quite remember, but he loved it! It may seem a little pricey but you do get a lot of food for your buck. I'd recommend going here for a nice night out! =] read more

Wife and I came for our ninth anniversary. We started our relationship at a former location of Donatello's and it still has a spot in our heart today. Wife had the Pollo Mediterrano and I had the Pollo Piccata and couldn't have been more satisfied. Chicken was cooked perfectly and was tender as could be. Both meals were piping hot upon delivery which is something going you don't often get at other restaurants. The atmosphere is spot on and the lights and colors are just muted enough to give the Italian ambiance yet not put you to sleep. Service was quick, engaging, and friendly, yet not overbearing. I still can't believe this happened! I'm a mature woman and I think most consider me to be an upstanding citizen of Indiana, Pa. I don't drink or smoke. I'm a semi-retired dietitian, a volunteer teen mentor and an avid gardener. When I leave my home to do errands or whatever, I carry a bottle of water. I also carry a small bottle of caffeine free Pepsi. For health reasons I can only drink caffeine free beverages. Also for health reasons, I need to sip cola to aid my digestion. (Are any of you old enough to remember doctors giving coke syrup for stomach aches? It works well.) For these 2 health reasons and because most restaurants don't sell caffeine free colas, I also carry the Pepsi with me when I go out for dinner. I put the bottle on the table along the wall beside my purse. I do not put it at my place setting. No restaurant has ever objected to this UNTIL I WENT TO DONATELLOS! I was seated and a waitperson brought my menu and water. As I was reading the menu, the woman from behind the bar showed up with an empty glass. She wanted to pour my Pepsi into it. I told her I didn't want to because I was only occasionally sipping it for digestion and was going to carry it with me through out the rest of my evening after I left the restaurant. She tried to pressure me by informing me that they had a policy about people having open drinks. There was no apparent posting of this policy. I offered to take my Pepsi out to my car. She said that wouldn't be necessary. She was obviously unhappy about the situation. By then I was feeling uncomfortable enough to consider leaving. Instead, I decided to ask the bar woman for the manager. She said she was the manager, so I just told her our exchange had left me feeling uncomfortable. The next thing I know, an older man who was sitting at the bar near my booth came over. He had heard everything. Neither he nor the bar woman seemed to give any credence to what I had said about my health needs. He proceeded to tell me that the open drink policy was his. He told me it was so people would buy drinks there. He didn't want to lose money from people bringing in drinks. He was going on and on about if he let one person do it everyone would want to. I was feeling even more uncomfortable. I just wanted to eat my dinner in peace. I told him that he would be making money on the dinner I would order. His next comment was just too ridiculous. He said first people would want to bring in drinks and the next thing they would want to bring in FOOD! By now I felt harassed, like a captive audience. I said, "Leave me alone or ask me to leave." He sputtered that he was not going to ask me to leave. I repeated, "Then leave me alone." He lost it and told me to get out. I stood to go and he kept his body very aggressively close to mine. As he walked me toward the door in that manner, effectively pushing me without touching me, he said, "We don't need people like you in here!" I was shaking in disbelief. Thrown out of a restaurant for the only time in my life and just for bringing in a small Pepsi. When I got to my car I realized I was still clutching their cloth napkin. My wife and I recently had diner at this establishment. We had been to their older restaurant and we liked it but our most recent visit was a let down. I had ordered the Sampler Plate and the penne, chicken parmigiana, and lasagna all tasted as if it we pre-frozen and heated up. The tomato sauce was uninspiring. The server, though attentive, was unknowledgeable as to ingredients and preparation of the foods when asked. The bread was uninspiring and tasted as if the local grocery baked it. When served our salads and meals were served, there were no offers of ground black pepper, (My wife had to explain it to the server.), red pepper flakes or grated cheese. The atmosphere was cozy in this small restaurant located on Phila St. in Indiana on a recent Saturday night. It was fairly crowded, so reservations would be a good idea. The wild mushroom ravioli was served in a light creamy sauce covered with cheese. The flavor of the mushrooms really came through in the ravioli. The cannelloni was filled with meat and spinach and served au gratin. The sauce was a light tomato bechamel and was very tasty. The spaghetti was served with peas and proscuitto ham. It was acceptable. Italian bread was served with a sauce which was a mixture of oil and sun dried tomatoes. It had a good flavor and resulted in us eating more bread than we really needed! Entrees ranged in price from $13 to $21. There was a fairly good selection to choose from on the menu. The beer was reasonably priced at 2.75 for domestics and 3.25 for imports. I would recommend Donotello's for a nice, reasonably priced Italian meal. read more

I have never had a bad experience at Donatello's. Yes, we have had a few servers that were 'ify' but this is a college town and help such as college students as servers happens. I remember when I first started a job and was nervous too. My favorite food is the Au gratin Mushroom Ravioli and get it every time I am there. My husband and I usually love this place, but after a recent visit to celebrate my husband's birthday, he ordered the lobster ravioli, I ordered the featured special, zucchini & eggplant parmesan. We both had salad (soup is the other option). When our dinners arrived, our mouths dropped open after seeing his plate, for $19, he had a salad, and his dinner plate had...wait for .it...4 lobster ravioli, 4... for my meal, the zucchini & eggplant parmesan (generous portion), along with a side of spaghetti, for $17. Now, when we questioned the portion size, we were told, " that is a regular dinner portion ". We sent it back. Two things, I'm sure Gordon Ramsey wasn't back in the kitchen, and I would be really surprised if the lobster was fresh. My point is, 4 ravioli? This is not a dinner portion, it is an appetizer. Please $19 dollars for a salad and 4 lobster ravioli? I specifically didn't mention the bread, that is served at every table. My daughter and I wandered in here while visiting IUP. We didn't know what to expect since the YELP reviews were mixed. I am so glad we came to Donatello's as the food was outstanding as was the service and atmosphere. We started out with the artichoke/crab dip served with crostini. The dip was tangy and flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning. Both my daughter and I ordered the Italian sampler of which you could choose 3 items from a list of many. This particular menu item came with both a soup and salad. We had the wedding soup which also was seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of meatballs. The salad dressing tasted homemade, it was a balsamic vinaigrette. I opted for blue cheese on mine. I typically don't eat side salads, but I finished the entire plate. Last came our sampler. Between the 2 of us we had veal, eggplant and zucchini Parmesan, manicotti, penne and cheese raviolis. A nice portion of each was plated and at this point we couldn't finish our meal and had the remainder boxed up to go. At the end, the very welcoming and personable owner, Drew came by our table to ask how everything was. When we told him how great the quality of the food was, he shared with us that everything on the menu is made with the freshest ingredients from local farms and sources.
