Hands down- ACHS is an awesomely beautiful campus…read more.. I recall "open house," when the community was able to tour the school before classes began this past August, and I compared it to a college campus. It's equipped with EVERYTHING- including a culinary arts kitchen adjacent to the cafeteria, a huge theater and gym, beautiful sports fields and even community college classrooms in the main building. It's also a super "green" school, and apparently it's paving the way for future schools to be energy efficient as well... The problem with a bright, new school is, of course, working out the kinks. While it appears that most teachers came from schools in the neighboring vicinities for the most part, that could be both a gift and curse depending on the reputation of your child and you child's chance at a "fresh start". My husband would also say, the football team could use a more diverse staff (but the volunteering moms are AWESOME! GO WOLVES!!!). My above-average 9th grader is doing great because he's a good student and newspaper-worthy athlete, so he had a good reputation and good rapport with the middle school teachers that moved on to ACHS. It also helps that the school only has 10th and 1th graders to start, so the Freshman didn't get that underclassmen welcome from the seniors. My IEP student, 7th grader???? Now, 2012 will be interesting if the world doesn't end... I am dreading an inevitable battle with administration. AND, the school has "combined classrooms" with 2 teachers and more than 60 students. If you're an "A" student, this may not matter so much, but some kids will definitely get lost in the shuffle. : / So, all in all (as my 3rd grader would write) the school is absolutely beautiful and locally staffed with a "down home" feel tucked away in the Bay's shadow, but your child's experience will probably be unique to their needs, as with any school. TIPS: Always use the entrance on the opposite side of American Canyon Rd. because you can exit both directions. The light at American Canyon Rd. also gets REALLY crowded, so avoid it if possible. A new bus route was added specifically for students and the fare is 50 cents each ride. Oh, and GO WOLVES... and GIANTS!!

The teachers here are wonderful. My child has been lucky and consistently gets very supportive…read moreteachers. There is a light IEP plan and they get some unofficial 1:1 time with the teaching assistant. I love the regular events throughout the year like the Multicultural Festival, holiday gatherings, and many more book fairs than the "old days". It was fun to see dancers, martial artists, we enjoy the events with crafting and cocoa and it's encouraging for students to preview their potential teachers end of year and do a day-before Meet and Greet with their official teacher the day before school starts. Very solid idea. I do think that it was unfortunate the clothing donation was run so vaguely compared to the crisp, regular, and direct communication at Canyon Oaks through the ParentSquare app; we lost two very warm coats to the donation program for Napa Moms or thieves at a time when I was out of work and winter was setting in. The principal told me to check the racks and the secretary told me to buy one at a thrift store. I used my last dollars on a credit card to get a half warm coat and the kid was cold that winter, so we added hoodies. Napa Moms Director Hanh Randall did not offer a coat for the situation as the principal hopefully suggested. Falling in the cracks is no fun, but it is what it is. When we could afford it, we installed trackers in the coats, they'll be found one way or the other next time. They are better about proactively communicating about IEP issues quickly here and offer a bit more support than at Canyon Oaks Elementary. At Canyon Oaks, I sat with a woman who said "they call me the Gatekeeper" and she tried to get me to sign away the IEP request only for other staff to contact me and ask me to keep it and approve more services. Just keep an eye on whoever you get and what they say at any school. I do feel that a monthly or bimonthly check in would be good with the teacher, just to connect and improve support and coordination since focus is a big challenge for my child. I get the feeling it will be easier to coordinate with the teacher this year though, this teacher is incredibly intuitive and adept and radiates positivity, calm, deep experience and understanding. Admin seems to be solid here, efficient school. PTA are the rockstars that support the rock star teachers.

Beware of this school and most specifically its new principal as of 2024. This school discriminates…read moreagainst students with disabilities. Regardless of your child's medical diagnosis, this school will go to such great lengths as intimidation, harassment and gaslighting to avoid paying for evaluations, IEP programs or any type of accommodations. Instead they will tell you your child is just poorly behaved because of your bad parenting. Your child may be bullied and they will turn a blind eye every time. Several students have been injured more than once and nothing is done. There is no inclusion whatsoever at this school, so if your child doesn't "fit the mold" prepare for the worst experience the public school system has to offer. It is all about money here and how they can avoid spending it. They have teachers and counselors fresh out of college with zero experience dealing with special needs children or children in general for that matter. No one cares about the children here, just that their "magnet" school has a good reputation. Don't let the outside fool you. Civil rights are being violated and disabilities ignored here. Something has to be done about the way this school is run and how the children and parents are treated here. Avoid at all costs if you want your children to have a positive learning experience. This is not just one child, this is multiple children being treated poorly, ignored, not believed and singled out. Parents do talk to each other, and the word is getting around about what is going on at this school.

Let's face it, Vallejo's public school system sucks... hard. I graduated from Bethel in 2003, and…read moremy reviews are based on the span of four years before that, however I'm sure not much has changed there. Teachers have a hard time connecting with students, and you can tell most have a frustrated time dealing with an unmotivated bunch. It's common to have at least one, two, a handful.... possibly a class full of students in each one of your classes that desperately need their parents to force feed some adderral down their throats. Students fight all the time, steal from the cafeteria, destroy things, disrupt your classes, do drugs, and things on the hill above the tennis courts that I can't really say on here. There are a few teachers that like to promote their political agenda to students as well. Oh and get used to the false fire alarms. Apparently we're not in enough debt that we have to waste money on expensive fire trucks. Sounds pretty ghetto huh? But you know what? I met a good many people here - many bright, talented, and smart individuals who just lacked the motivation to really push themselves. I found that it is the environment and the group of people that you associated with that really make your time in HS. Truth is that most students have a kind heart here with a tough exterior, however I must say that I still met my fair share of nasties as well. In retrospect though, I had an awesome experience here that humbled me for college. Comparing my attitude to those rich privy hs kiddies in college put things in perspective. I didn't exactly receive the best education though - I would have to thank my parents for tutoring me after hours to get to where I am today. However, it was a blast in HS and cheers to Bethel for that. What? McNally Calculus? Solar Flare!!

We had basically 3 factions, the wall sitters, the step sitters, and loosely in between were the rest of us. Having just experienced a game of Powder Puff Football reinforces how different the small town school experience is from the more urban one. Everyone turned out to support the football players and the cheerleaders, everyone had a great time and everyone mingled with everyone else. But beyond that, Benicia offers it's students an opportunity to get a great education under the tutelage of caring teachers, counselors and administrators. My niece, the last of my sisters three children to graduate from BHS has had some bumpy periods, but unlike some other schools, BHS doesn't allow it's students to fall through the cracks ( for the most part ). They offer a curriculum that peaks their interests and also has extra curricular activities that make for a well rounded educational experience. If you move to Benicia, rest assured that your child will get a great education. If you are looking for a place to move, put Benicia on the top of your list. It's a little more pricey, but well worth it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/12568072@N05/sets/72157618477482039/

Hi, my name is Samantha Guerrero, and I am a student at Hogan Middle School. I want to share my…read moreexperience with the school. When I first started attending this school, I thought it was going to be a good experience. However, over time, I have become very disappointed with the way certain situations have been handled. Some of my teachers are kind, supportive, and helpful, but I have also had experiences with staff members who have made me feel like my concerns are not being taken seriously. When students are dealing with problems such as bullying or other issues, they should be able to go to the office and receive help and support. Recently, I have not been allowed to attend my classes because the school is pressuring my mom regarding a required vaccination. I was told that this situation would not affect my grades and that I would not be marked absent. However, I am concerned because I am missing class and my grades are beginning to drop. I believe I should be allowed to continue attending school while my mom works on resolving the vaccination issue. Missing classes is affecting my education, and I do not believe I should have to fall behind because of a situation that is being handled by my parent and the school. I respectfully ask that the school contact my mom and explain exactly what is required and whether I can return to class while the issue is being resolved. I want to attend school, keep up with my work, and make sure this situation does not negatively affect my education. Thank you for taking my concerns seriously.
