We called the campground and unbelievably, they answered that late. Sandy agreed to stay there until we got there. Mike met us on his golf cart and toured us to 3 sites and let us pick. He then used his 30 years of mad trucking skills to get us into a tight site at dusk. He was awesome. We were in before it was completely dark. Full hookups including cable. Lovely neighbors. Pet friendly. We asked to stay 3 nights and they were able to work some magic to avoid having us move. What a stress reliever! The next morning they had a pet parade - all the dogs dressed to the nines! Fun! Thank you Sandy and Mike For taking the stress out of our last minute issue - right down to nothing!! You guys rock! We didn't use the heated pool but looked inviting (-and verified it was in fact warm!) Peeked at the activity center and laundromat- both looked good! i'm hard pressed to really call this place a resort. it more like a historically iconic hotel, on…read morethe beach, that has kept most of it's laid back, dive-y charm, then added 2 more modern buildings on the back side that don't reflect the beachy lifestyle look. we were in one of the original buildings, our room faced a parking lot which is shared with waldo's restaurant. parking can be difficult to find a spot near your room and they encourage you to park in the back lot and walk around to your rooms, which sucks when you're trying to unload or load your car when coming or going. many of the employees park in this tiny lot and tie up space for most of the day, seen a lot of restaurant patrons leave their cars in the lot overnight, without a dash pass identifying you as a hotel guest. our room was tiny & weirdly laid out....teeny tiny kitchen without a dishwasher, so i had to put all the dishes, glasses & silverware in the sink, boil water and rewash everything because i don't know who washed the dishes before us & what their hygiene habits are. only 1 tv in the living room, which you can't see from the "bedroom" which is actually a small room with sliding panel doors, THAT DON'T WORK, for privacy if needed. the linens, bed & pillows were all clean, soft and comfortable. the amount of broken closet doors, tiles, lamps is crazy. i get the whole dive charm that they want to display, but for pete's sake, at least get a handy man in there to fix all the broken crap. if you are a stickler for perfection & posh details, THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR YOU. if you can dig that lazy, laid back, dumpy divey charm, then come here. we never used the pool. the 1 pool was attached to the restaurant and all you can smell is cigarettes and listen to loud drunks & music, the other pool called "the quiet pool" was over by the newer buildings, never saw it. we don't come to the beach to swim in a pool. front desk people are so laid back & cool. this is the first time a hotel didn't ask for a credit card to be put on file for incidentals, they just said "we trust you". AND i was really surprised & chuckled at the fact that our room keys were actual metal keys & not key cards. they do push the "rustic charm" to the limit, but as long as i have a comfortable bed, a place to shower, sh*t & shave, i'm good, not on vacay to hang out in a hotel room all day, i'm there to experience the area. ***the only complaint i have is that this place considers itself a NON SMOKING RESORT, but puts ashtrays on all the tables outside of the rooms, so you're always walking through the stink of cigarettes someplace on the property

The Captain Forester Hammock Preserve is located one-mile south of County Road 510 on the Historic…read moreJungle Trail which is a State designated greenway and a byway of the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Highway. The Jungle Trail is not paved and is frequented by bike riders so you must travel very slowly on it. Captain Frank Forster, the Preserve's namesake, was born in 1856 in Hamburg, Germany. When he came of age he ran away and pursued a sailing career that took him all over the world. When he was ready to settle down he acquired land north of where the Wabasso Bridge is today from the Homestead Act where he built a house and a dock for his sailing ship, the Dood. He named the area Orchid and in 1887 established the first post office in the area where he became the postmaster. He also built a one room schoolhouse on his homestead. In 1893 Captain Forester planted a citrus grove but it was plagued by several years of freezes. When he replanted the grove, he added cabbage, beans, guava and Easter lilies. In 1894 Captain Forester married Albertine Enos who was brought to Florida from Vermont as a child by her mother to recover from Scarlet Fever. in 1897 the couple had their first child Mary. Captain Forester is well regarded for having put Indian River on the map for its produce. In 1905 the St Lucie Tribune praised the "extra fine quality of his fruit" which made up hundreds of boxes of shipments. Captain Forester brought many people to settle the the Orchid/Wabasso area by selling off plots of his lands. One of the pioneering families was the Michaels family whose land is now the Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. Captain Forester also helped Henry Flagler obtain rights of way through the Vero Beach area in the 1890's for the railroad. In return he was awarded the contract to sell the fruit and vegetables to the dining cars. Captain Forster Hammock Preserve which runs river to ocean was purchased in the mid 1990s by Indian River County with funds from the State Conservation and Recreation Lands Program. The county purchased the land to preserve the cultural and natural resources located here. There are at least 14 designated species listed as Threatened or Endangered by Federal and State Agencies found on the property. Today Captain Foresters citrus grove is a 110-acre conservation area managed by Indian River County. It is open every day from 8 AM until sunset. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. The preserve was opened with public access improvements including new restrooms and a parking lot on February 17, 2003. You can still see the remains of the old brick homestead chimney on the west side of the parking lot. The preserve includes several different habitats from the shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon to the Coastal Scrub as you hike to the dune along the oceanfront. east. Captain Forster Hammock Preserve contains six distinct natural communities.  These include sandy beach, mature oak hammocks, hydric hammock, depression marsh, tidal mangrove swamp, and coastal strand. The largest natural community within the conservation area is a Maritime Hammock, making up 68% of the preserve. it is one of the last remaining mature maritime hammocks in the county. Visiting Captain Forester's Preserve allows you to travel back in time to how this area looked before modern development. I enjoyed hiking on the 1.1 mile out and back trail. There are several shorter dead end trails that shoot off from it. The trail is natural earth so it is not ADA accessible but it is an easy hike, good for all ages and fitness levels. A walk through the preserve provides the perfect opportunity for exercise, photography, bird watching, and nature discovery. There are interpretive and educational signs at the entrance to the preserve, trail head, and along the trail so you can learn about the history of the preserve and the flora and fauna here. The preserve contains many love oak trees where you may see butterflies, orchids, and bromeliads. During migration season, the preserve is a frequent stop for songbirds like yellow-throats, black and white warblers. As you walk east in the preserve the elevation becomes higher and the soil becomes drier. In this area you will find more drought tolerant plant like Simpson's Stopper, bumelia, prickly pear cactus, and snowberry. This is the area where the threatened gopher tortoise makes its home in burrows in the sandy soil. Captain Forester Hammock Preserve is a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail.

Forks weighs a ton and falls of the plate due to weigh. 6. Bathroom setups are too small for larger people. 7. Units on both side of this unit need an update. Unit on the right needs to be gutted. The left side unit is being remodeled and the patio is absolutely beautiful. I haven't seen the inside. It doesn't appear it's for rent. 8. The unit we renting can be a haven just need money reinvested. I rather pay for comfort than to pay a price to be disappointed by pictures that doesn't accurately depict the unit.

The cottages are nicely decorated, the private hot tub was a gift that kept on giving, the pool area was calming, listening and watching the to the waves from our private porch was the ultimate. The property manager, Chasity B, was onsite often and was just lovely. You can tell that this property is owned and operated locally by the attention to detail including the landscaping and little touches like beach chairs and coolers. We will be back next year without a doubt. We loved the St. Thomas room on the second floor. Had the opportunity to see the Cayman Suite...newly renovated and lovely.
