I called the day before a trip up north to get used tires. The service lady knew the exact tire size I needed just by hearing what vehicle I had and let me know I could come by today. Upon arrive the friendly lady showed me tires I could pick from and already had the ones with the most tread on them ready to go. They got me in and gave me a great price on all 4 tires for my truck mounted and balanced. I heard about them from my father who bought tires 12 years ago and was very pleased. I always get my tires here and I have multiple cars. I would have given a good review up until now. I stopped in to ask a question about the tires I had on my car (purchased there) and was told that those were not the tires they put on. They insisted the put M. Defenders on. I never had that tire on my car and am certain that they put my tires on. So did I get charged for the defender and get a cheaper tire? I would be very careful to check the paper work against the tire before you leave. I will never trust them again. Buyer beware! read more

My truck is not a massage chair. So you might imagine my exasperation when I foolishly went to the cheapest tire garage in New Britain, and after mounting and "balancing" four NEW tires, I was still vibrating down the highway, sometimes at speeds as low as 40MPH. I bought the new tires because the old ones were causing problems despite balancing. "Dude, these tires are way way off... I don't know what these guys were thinking." "Look at this, bro! This tire is 3 ounces off on the inside, and 7.5 on the outside! "No, you don't have a bent rim or anything... those guys just employ idiots who don't know how to balance tires or do their jobs!" Just a small sample of the bewildered exclamations of Ed, my new hero, who balanced my tires at Don Stevens just yesterday. It was a Thursday late afternoon, which is one of their busier days since they're open late. Still, I was in and out in under 45 minutes. I've been driving on roads made of butter ever since. And these aren't your momma's all season radials, they're 33" General Grabber AT2 all-terrain tires. But they ride well, they roll straight, and they DON'T VIBRATE. I gave them 2 stars because they are a cheap fix with getting used tires. There are no appointments here. It is first come fist serve, & you better be ready to wait. I waited 2 hours yesterday & I was next in line. I purchased 3 used tires, which coat $55 a piece installed. I noticed them grinding something on the inside icons oft tires yesterday, which is the same one that became flat last night... The same reason I'm back here today. Forgive my ignorance, because I know nothing about changing a tire on a rim, but I'm not sure why the grinding was done. It just seems odd to me that this is the flat tire. I was typing the above as they were fixing my tire, & feel it is somewhat important for the review. After they fixed their broken tire, I was told that they gave me a used tire that once had a hole in it. They tried to fix the leak, but it must have still had a slow leak when they gave it to me. They exchanged the tire for a new one, & said something like, "Better safe than sorry." Why didn't they think of that the day before? read more

This place is the worst, the customer service is terrible. The lady in the front likes to start fights with anyone that comes in eye sight, which is strange since she doesnt do anything but set up the appointments. Then the guys that work on the tires lied saying that they didn't fully tighten my screws to the point that they couldn't remove the tire. I am a seven time repeat customer and I have always been very satisfied with their work. They are the cheapest place to buy used tires and I swear by their service. When they make mistakes, which we are all human, they go above and beyond to make good and keep your business. They were also so helpful with my grandma when she purchased her tires there. She has a heavy accent and it is hard to understand her, but they were very patient and understanding with her. They even remembered her months later. They even still had the two tires she never picked up the first trip tucked away in the back and the office didnt even have reccord of it, but the boys in the shop knew right where they were. P.S. My final comment is in regard to the previous review. the grinding on the inside of the tire was the final step in a flat repair. the three tires you bought must have been the last in that size they had for a used tire. the flat repair must have failed. It happens. That is the trade off for buying tires for less than half the price of new. They still made things right by replacing the faulty tire with a brand new one. And one last thing... to any of the staff at Don Stevens Tire, Thank you all for your pleasant customer service, sound advice, and exceptional service. The only positives about this place are that I was able to get an appointment, the service was quick, and they seem to be the only place in the area to sell used tires. I am not happy at all with my experience. I needed two used rear tires. I gave them my tire size, and when I was ready to get my car with receipt in hand, the receipt had a difference tire size on it! REALLY?! I ask the guys and they say they only had one in the size I needed and that it should be fine with the ones I was given. I wanted all four tires to have the same size. At that point I was so shocked and blindsided I didn't know what to do since they don't do refunds, I had paid, and the tires were on. If you didn't have my tire size I wouldn't have done it. I have never had such a horrible experience at a tire place before. I brought my car in to purchase 4 used tires. I had to wait 3 hrs but knew that was to be expected. I payed $143.00 for the tires and was pleased that they were guaranteed for 30 days. I left and immediately noticed my car was pulling hard to the right and that there seemed to be a lot of road noise. There was a lot of tread on the front tires so I assumed they were just making noise from the deep tread. The next day however my tire pressure light was on and the tire had half the recommended amount of air in it. I filled it back up with air and called don Stevens. They told me to come back and they would check the tire. I came in a couple days later because I couldn't take off a day of work. At this point every morning and night I had to add air to the tire. When I brought it in they made me wait 3 hrs again. Their first story was that grit around my rim caused the tire to lose air, they then said it was a nail. I had also asked them for an alignment since it was pulling to the right. I paid $50 for that. They told me my tire was patched and alignment was done and sent me on my way. Well immediately that night the tire lost air, my alignment was still off and pulling very hard to the right. I called don Stevens and got a very rude response. I was furious. Not only did they not fix the tire for a second time but they didn't even do the alignment correctly. At this point I had decided I couldn't spend another 3 hrs at that shop having them lie to me about repairs and what was wrong. I purchased brand new tires and an alignment. The shop told me that there was no way and alignment had been performed on y car and that my passenger tire was very much out of alignment. They also said the tire put on my car was clearly in an accident and had a large bubble on the sidewall. Also the front tires come to find out were not a Matching pair. I got the specs from my alignment and kept the used tires. I contacted don Stevens and they told me they would not give me my money back for either tires or alignment and would only issue a store credit which I didn't not want considering their lack of knowledge or service on my car. Tires are very important and they put my safety at risk not once but twice just to make a buck. I reported them to the better business bureau. They have not responded to the better business bureaus inquiry. I'm very disappointed in don Stevens tire. They are disrespectful to their customers and try to rip people off. Hopefully people reading this review will not go there it's not worth it. I spent double what I would have if i had just bought new tires in the first place. read more

This place is the most honest, no-nonsense car repair business that I've been to in years. Paying $250 to get my front disc brakes replaced was infinitely better than having to pay $400 or more at one of the mechanics around here for the same quality of work. The last time I went in, I thought that I needed front and rear brakes and was prepared to pay for both. The mechanic (don't remember his name) who worked on my car was patient with me and my cluttered glove box (I have a "key" for my hub caps that he needed and it was buried somewhere under a mountain of napkins, paperwork, etc.). He told me that I only needed my front brakes done, explaining that the drum brakes in the back don't need to be changed as frequently as the discs in front, and would last until my next brake repair. Haven't had any issues with the brakes and would definitely go back again, especially since they do suspension checkups (including axles) and one can never be too cautious with those parts. read more

For many years I bought used tires from Don Stevens and was satisfied with their service. I can't say the same for the mechanic work they do. Last October I was on vacation visiting my daughter, I took her SUV in for new tires and they gave me a good price. While replacing the tires the manager (I believe) told me the brake pads needed to be replaced. I said fine and they replaced the pads. Long story short, 9 months later my daughter notices the brakes feel strange, she takes it back and they tell her at first the front rotors and pads need to be replaced, then they tell her the back rotors and pads need to be replaced. They did not charge her for the pads, but they doubled the labor charge per a voicemail I have from the manager, referencing the original receipt. I also have photos of the replaced pads from October and the parts from the recent service. I spoke with several toyota service managers and other garages and they all agree that something is off in this situation. I spoke to Don Stevens a few times about this, with a conversation with Jared Stevens this afternoon who pretty much discounted my claims, made no offers of compromise or accommodation and said he stands behind his mechanics work, I have never encountered this degree of professional inflexibility with a business both professionally and personally in my life. I had a great experience with Don Steven's. I arrived with my air pressure light consistently on no matter how much air I put in my tires. They diagnosed it was my right rear tire and recommended replacing it. I did and paid 53 dollar with tax included. I also told them the car would shimmy when I reached 60 mph (It was knocked out of alignment when hit by a snowplow last month) They said their alignment computer was out of service and set up an appointment for me. I was in and out in 25 minutes, no more shimmy and the used replacement tire is perfect. I have noticed that all of the good reviews for this place are kept in Yelp's not relevant file. I hope this one does not end up there!! It seems they don't think it is relevant unless someone had a bad experience. I would recommend Don Steven's Tire to anyone and everyone. read more
