"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."…read more --Honest Abe For all those about to bust orchestral maneuvers (in the dark or otherwise), get ready to sharpen your axe. My son's first cello lesson with Mannfried Funk (my friend exclaimed that this is the best musical name a person could have, bar none, and he's dead-on!), began with an almost entirely visual assessment of where he was at skillwise, as evidenced by his physical relationship to the cello. In about 45 seconds, Mannfried had it all dialed in. My kid has always been running to catch up. He started orchestra a year behind the flock in his first school, then 2 years behind the excellent and more intensive Eckstein orchestra (which rehearses daily). In each case, he caught up, and in each case was Most Improved. But all that hustling to "learn the music" meant he never "learned the cello." Mannfried makes this important distinction, and it's incredibly astute. He took one look at everything: posture, limbs, sweep of the bow, and--not unkindly--told him to just put the cello down for a while. It was an awesome lesson. An abnormally long lesson. They talked about physics and gravity, about proaction and reaction, about efficiency, conservation of energy, and minimization of effort. He had Maximo stand up, then return to the chair and position himself with the cello no less than five times to reinforce the muscle memory of what will be an entirely new, more efficient posture. This guy knows his shit backwards and forward. And let's not forget his SINGING DOG. He said that for a while he'd sequester the dog upstairs to keep him from singing along, but he'd still hear him up there, disconsolate and humming. But the lesson. Every student could and should have this kind of a foundation, and truthfully no group instructor will ever have the time and resources (and many would never have the intimate knowledge themselves) to impart this kind of an education--it approached the metaphysical. There are talented practitioners, and there are talented teachers, and they're not always the same people. I'm sure this guy can play like a house on fire, but christ on a cracker, has he got a genius for teaching. He doesn't talk down or patronize, nor is he gruff or the stern taskmaster. He is a persuasive, knowledgeable clinician with an intuitive, and highly prescriptive approach. Not only am I thrilled we've found him, I'm considering reinitiating lessons myself. I could not recommend him more highly to any student at any stage of their musical evolution. And for beginners, a few sessions with him ought to be mandatory.

The combination of Andy's ability to help you grow in the technical and psychological aspects of improving your singing and his artful and skillful piano accompaniment (transposing on the fly into whatever key works best for you!), adds up to a great experience. I often push myself to go to a lesson, feeling tired after a long day at work, and leave feeling so much better physically and mentally. We laugh a lot while we work! I appreciate that Andy works with you to achieve your goals, and he will push you to stretch to make progress, but he's fundmentally there to hlep you get what you want from your lessons--the kind of music you want to sing, whether you want to perform, when you want to push yourself on technique and when you want to just relax and sing. And he realizes all that may change week to week and evolve over time. Perhaps the strongest proof of the trust I have in Andy and the growth I've experienced working with him over the years is that improvising is an incredbly vulnerable thing for me to do--mistakes, wrong notes, falling off the edge of the tune, eek! And I regularly improvise now at my lessons and it brings me a special kind of happiness to able to experiment, play, create beauty, and express myself. Arturo was eloquent and ran the wedding perfectly. The music set up and lights were very well done. We had a four hour open bar and we did not experience any issues and everyone had a great time. For anyone considering having Arturo at your wedding as a DJ, you should definitely do it. His rates are reasonable and my husband (military) is a fine detail type planner so he kept us to budget - after discussions with all the various services, Arturo was (a) mature, (b) moderately priced, (c) had his own equipment and set up, and (d) was respectful. The number one issue my husband had when talking to DJ's were that they were (a) young and distasteful in approach and (b) nickel and dimed over every detail. If we have another party in the future we will be contacting Arturo again.

You showed up to our event un prepared: this included not having your lights that we had agree upon, a missing extension cord and not putting together our playlist. You left to retrieve your lights causing you to be almost 30 minutes late to the event, and on the phone on your way back you requested an extension cord from the facility. Not following clear instructions: I had sent you a play list several weeks in advance was not played. You told my husband that you had intended on formulating it upon arrival. The playlist also requested that no songs with profanity be played, and this was also not followed. There was an overabundance of ABBA played, such that our friends are now calling it the "ABBA party." Unprofessional conduct: The bar tender told me that she had to "cut you off" from the alcohol served at the party. I'm not sure what is typical in your profession, but in my profession any drinking on the job is unacceptable. Additionally, when I tried to speak with you at the end of the evening to express my dissatisfaction, instead of apologizing, you were defensive and argumentative, possibly because of the alcohol, but regardless in appropriate. As someone in the customer service industry, I am particularly aware and sensitive to dealing with clients and going above and beyond to make a client happy. Perhaps this is something for you to think about in the future. I hope you take some lessons from this experience, I know I will. Cherie

When I was in second grade and rehearsing for a class recital, the music teacher pulled me aside…read moreafterward and said, "Marissa maybe you should just move your lips. . ." Ever since then I've had an understandable fear of singing in front of people; A fear that I wanted to conquer. I needed a voice instructor who I could trust, who was easygoing, who had an open mind and a forgiving ear. I found what I needed in Kristin Chambers. Kristin is a talented, multi-faceted performer in her own right, and she put me completely at ease and made it clear that I'd be working at my own pace. She helped me set some realistic goals and then systematically helped me achieve them. I was a beginner and starting out at ground zero; but Kristin pushed me when I needed pushing, and didn't allow me to beat myself up when I was struggling. She was an A+ cheerleader. Because my fear of singing was boarder-line phobia, it's impossible to overstate how awesome it was to find someone willing to take me on, on my own terms and who tailored the instruction specifically to my needs. My brother asked me to sing a song at his wedding this fall. He's my brother and I couldn't refuse, but I first had to face the haunting legacy of that teacher's words.
