His knowledge of the art of drumming is extensive and his lessons are always as informative as they are fun. He's great at breaking down complex rhythms into digestible parts that even someone with no music experience can master. For those who are more musically inclined, his more advanced ensemble classes allow you to explore densely layered rhythms and different techniques. I'm also a big fan of the intensive weekend workshops, or urban retreats, he holds. I attended a workshop where we learned a Senegalese Bak, which was a very cool rhythm. It was neat to hear the story behind how he learned it and the significance of the rhythm.

The combination of Andy's ability to help you grow in the technical and psychological aspects of improving your singing and his artful and skillful piano accompaniment (transposing on the fly into whatever key works best for you!), adds up to a great experience. I often push myself to go to a lesson, feeling tired after a long day at work, and leave feeling so much better physically and mentally. We laugh a lot while we work! I appreciate that Andy works with you to achieve your goals, and he will push you to stretch to make progress, but he's fundmentally there to hlep you get what you want from your lessons--the kind of music you want to sing, whether you want to perform, when you want to push yourself on technique and when you want to just relax and sing. My daughter who is 17 will be graduating this year, and my son who is 14 still takes lessons. Both are taught by the amazing Dr. Charles Atwood. Let me just say this will be the best decision and educational investment you will ever make for your children. Both of my kids started at the age of 4 and this really changed their lives and wired their minds for music for the rest of their lives. When we started this journey, we had no ambitions about our kids being concert violinists, we just wanted them to enjoy music and hopefully have it be an enriching part of their lives. Now I can say unequivocally that this program wired both of our children's brains to be magically musically literate. My daughter has taught herself several instruments including Piano and Ukulele, based on the musical literacy she gained from study here.
