By far, the best coffee I've ever had! No exaggeration. They brew it by the cup which unfortunately means no refills as we are used to in the states. But, you don't need more than one cup. We went for breakfast. Myself, wife, and six-year-old son. Very kid friendly. Being able to eat out in the open was awesome. As far as the food, Mayan breakfast and Aztec breakfast are incredible! Food was so delicious we actually went back the next day. For those with an American palette (like my son) they have an American breakfast which consists of the usual (pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage). Juices are freshly squeezed and all natural. They put out this spicy pickled medley as and accompaniment to every meal. Consisted of carrots, jalapeños, onions, and garlic. Delicious!!! read more

Went to this place for the pickled vegetables and Pescado Frita (Fried whole fish). We arrived around 8pm and they were already sold out for the fresh fish. So I suggest going earlier if that's what you're going for. The free pickled vegetables, nachos and salsas will fill you up fast and the portions are very large. So careful how much you order, we order just a soup azteca (amazerballs!!) and the fish tacos and didn't even get close to finishing. But it's super cheap so go crazy if you want to try lots. Waiter added a tip of 25% to the bill without even asking which btw is actually illegal in Mexico. Needless to say I did not leave 25% and in fact did not leave a tip. The food isn't bad, and the place is actually quite cool but the service really left a bad taste in my mouth. I actually spoke with the manager who didn't seem that surprised by what had happened which leads me to believe that perhaps this is a common occurrence. Don Cafeto surprised us. We happened to drop in on a whim for lunch and were very glad we did. The complementary escabeche was very tasty and we gobbled down whole bowl. We ordered cuba librés and fish tacos. Sitting near the kitchen we were able to watch the chef chop up delectable white fish for our tacos which were delicious and filling. The busy roadside location isn't great for overall atmosphere, but excellent for people watching. read more

I've been visiting Quintana Roo for about 15 years, every trip from Cancun airport down to Bacalar, we would stop here for a meal. Best escabeche ever! The prices have increased A LOT since my first visit, but the restaurant has also expanded and renovated the bathrooms (a big plus!). In the beginning, the restaurant was half the size and very quaint. Waiters were super attentive and outgoing. On my last visit (2014), the waiters were much less attentive and food was very expensive for Mexico. But I would still stop on a trip down, if for nothing more than the good memories and escabeche. read more

This place has very good seafood, tacos, fish with garlic, and many other extremely good dishes. Also, they have a very nice free entré, so don't order a lot because it'll fill you up. Although we are originally from the US, we are residents of Mexico. We have had several dinners at Don Cafeto over the past several months. It used to be a really good restaurant, with excellent choices and excellent live music. We liked it enough to take visiting family and friends here on a regular basis. However...THAT STOPS AS OF TONIGHT. We took some friends here tonight, ordered our meals and all was excellent - until the checks came. On the bottom of the check, THEY ADDED A 10% SERVICE FEE. First of all, this is ILLEGAL in Mexico. Now, let me make this clear, this was not a hand-written addition, this was PRINTED BY THEIR EQUIPMENT. I showed him my residency card, told him I knew it was illegal, told him I was going to call PROFECO and he immediately started apologizing and said I only had to pay the "sub-total". He then quickly took the checks from us and walked away. I asked him for a copy of the check and he came back with a new one that didn't have the service fee added. I asked to speak to the manager, but he never got anyone and I didn't see one around. As a last insult to what would have been an excellent meal, he brought my change ($40 pesos) in...forty $1 peso coins. Really? I will be calling PROFECO tomorrow and we and our friends and families will no longer eat here. Really sad as this place had a lot going for it. Our friends that we brought with us here tonight are also residents of MX, so they will also be spreading the word about this. There are plenty of good restaurants who do things the right way - I don't need this place. TOURISTS: Do NOT allow restaurants to get away with this. THEY KNOW it is illegal and try to gouge unknowing gringos of an extra 10%. Is that a significant amount? No. But, that is missing the point. CHECK your receipts, call them out on this a contact PROFECO! If the owner or manager reads this, I would love to hear from you, but I have a feeling I won't. read more

My fiancé and friends came here twice while spending a week In Tulum and weren't disappointed. Everything was delicious each time we went. The food was affordable, drinks were good and the cuisine was great if you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine. Here's the skinny on this place if you're looking for an afternoon snack... the escabeche is amazing and is served free with chips and pico de gallo. After shopping for souvenirs in el pueblo, we decided to try Don Cafeto for lunch. It was crowded, but we were lucky to snag a table by the entrance. They had live spanish music, which we loved! It was a nice change from the typical boho-jazz type music they play along the beach road establishments. My husband ordered the arrachera tacos, and I ordered the grilled fish tacos (they were out of the whole fried fish). The chips were crunch, the pico de gallo was very spicy so beware, and the pickled carrots and peppers were delicious! I ordered a fresh lemonade and it was so refreshing, especially with the shaved ice. Our food arrived promptly for them being so busy, and we devoured it! The fish was perfectly cooked and came with chopped onions and cilantro. The arrachera meat had a nice char and flavor to it, my husband enjoyed them very much! Myself and my new friends from the beach came here as one of them had read somewhere that this was a good place for delicious and authentic Mexican food. As we were 3 we ordered the Mexican platter and even though it looked tasty it actually was pretty tasteless which came as a surprise. The staff weren't very friendly especially compared to the place where I eat back in Australia. I have had tacos from the street vendors and a lot of taco stands on the street are as good as this restaurant and way cheaper. If it were cheaper and the staff were more accommodating I would have given it 4/5. read more

I might be a little biased, I had my first meal in Tulum at Don Cafeto and I was very hungry. But the tempera fish tacos...wow. They were the perfect balance between fish and chips and Mexican cuisine. The four tacos were served with shredded carrots and a small green salad in the middle.
