St. Cyprian has a mourning support group that I find it very helpful and I highly recommend it…read more You do not need to be mourning the loss of a love one by death to join the support group, it can be the loss of your health, separation from a spouse, you name it, just don't be shy and come to join them, they're expecting you! I came to this support group after the mother of the man that I love passed away. Her death affected me so much that I couldn't be there for him the way I wanted to but God's loving care prevailed In the meantime that I was coming to the group for healing and help I was able to do the only thing that I knew it would help him, I prayed and I place him in HIS hands They say "when prayers go up, blessings come down" and I wanted him to live a happy blessed life and God's unlimited power helped him to get thru it I prayed to God to care for him, I was afraid he was going to go into a deep depression and he did but HE took care of him and in God's perfect timing he came out safe and stronger I prayed for him every single day for God to make him feel HIS love, his purpose on earth and to fill him with His peace and to never let him feel lonely and in despair Mildred's passing made me aware that I didn't heal from my grandparents passing and that I need it to take action in order for me to get well and to get the strength that I need it to help her son in any possible way Letting God step in was the best thing I could do, HE did a better job than me alone. The pain of losing a love one never goes away but we learn and get strength to carry on in life Thanks to this mourning support group I was able to accept and understand that Mildred and my grandparents had accomplished their mission on earth and that God called them home Being in the group also made me see that other people had it worse than me. Some of the participants have lost their children by suicide and the pain from the deceased gets transferred to the living. I also met the deacon of St. Cyprian's church who was going thru a deep depression after losing both of his legs because of diabetes. I'm happy to report that he is doing great now, he was able to find purpose in the middle of his suffering and now he is a living testimony. After listening to everyone's situations you become more humble and appreciative of your own journey Forever grateful for this support group that helped me understand the process of mourning and discover some ways to cope and to find a way of not losing myself In gratitude to Mildred and thanks to her son I was able to be there for Mildred's husband to cheer him up every time that he had a hard time missing his wife I understood how people mourn differently and that "life goes on" we can only choose to honor those that passed away by being happy on earth and by doing our best one day at a time I also took a fantastic Lector's training at this church that helped me to become a better lector at my own church. Grateful for this St. Cyprian doesn't have morning service on Saturdays, they only have 5:00 pm vigil mass and the church remains closed in the morning until late so don't be surprised if you go to the church in the morning and you find it closed They have an 8:30 am mass Monday thru Friday, I think this is great for retired people or anyone that's not a morning person This church doesn't offer an evening mass St. Cyprian's has 7:30 am service on Sunday. I think this is perfect if you have big plans for your day and you want to start your morning with God They have limited parking, if you get there late you might have to park by the street and it can be a challenge to find an available spot; there is also a protestant church next to St Cyprian and people come to their Sunday service too The gift shop only opens on Sunday from 8:00 am-2:00 pm except on holiday weekends. It's Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?…read more My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/AIDS in minority communities and the church's response to people dealing with the disease. Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review.... There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds...can you imagine that? African-Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections. Young adults between the ages of 13-25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now, but get tested...OK? So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don't know why that is. Maybe they're happy to be doing something for others. Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said "People will come to church for the food and for the love." The people at St. Luke's certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn't so bad either.
