"Down in New Orleans where everything's fine all them cats…read moreis drinkin' that wine Drinkin' that mess is their delight when they get drunk start singin' all night" (Jerry Lee Lewis) We've been big fans of Ocean State Job Lot for years and must have visited half a dozen locations in three states. But today, we saw something in their Sturbridge, MA store we had never seen before. They sell wine! Yes, they had a big sign in the shape of a wine bottle hanging from ceiling wires directing us to their wine and beer section. I didn't see much beer, but I sure saw quite a few bottles of wine. Who knew? That was just one of the revelations we had while shopping in their aisles today. The main revelation was just how large and neat and well stocked this store is. Their pricing is about the same as we've seen in other OSJLs, and that means pricing is pretty good. We spent a teense over $20 on an eclectic assortment of Polar Orange Dry soda ($1.99 for a six-pack), a container of curry powder (OSJL is our "go to" store for spices), parchment paper, some beef jerky and beef sticks, some soup and entrée mixes, two boxes of tissues, a container of chicken broth, a box of cereal, and a container of breadcrumbs. A very nice haul for the price. OSJL is an interesting franchise -some locations are small, cluttered, and unpleasant to shop in. Not here, we had a great experience, even if we didn't come out with a bottle of wine. Cheers!

Brooklyn Yelper L P. said it best when she described Acme as having a "totally random selection of…read morecheap crap". Well done L.P. !! This store is a real trip - you will find one helluva totally random section of cheap crap everywhere. They have a wall full of "Slightly Out of Date" over the counter cold remedies and pain killers, cheap greeting cards, cheap Tee Shirts, cheap baseball caps, cheap school supplies, cheap socks and candy and sunglasses, and more varieties of masking tape than I ever knew existed. We picked up a long sleeve T shirt and some packing tape for a fraction of what we would have paid anywhere else. LOL- totally random stuff indeed !

Or a Saturday Night Live inspired coffee mug? Perhaps a magnet with something about your horoscope? Rubber gloves? Cheap sweatshirt? Socks? Butt paste for babies? Seriously - this store is a blast. We always find awesome randomness that we didn't know that we needed (or even wanted) before we walked in there. Last year we found fantastic, really old baseball cards (don't eat the gum!!) and this time a combination of a great little gardening item, electrical tape, doorstops and a Northampton magnet! Love me som Acme Surplus!!

"I've tried and tried to no avail You just can't seem to let…read moreme down You drive a hard bargain" (Emmylou Harris) We enjoy our bargain stores and are fans of Ocean State Job Lot, Big Lots and Ollies. Two days ago, we made our first visit to the Ollies on Grafton Street in Worcester. We picked up our "go to" Ollies staples -coffee K Cups (BTW, we do recycle them) and found some very good values on $4 or $5 for a box. Although we did get some good values, we thought the overall coffee inventory was lower than in other Ollies. We usually pick up some odds and ends in the food section and Ollies had a good selection of soups and salsas. One odd thing I saw was a trend of messiness in some of the store's sections. There were area rugs dumped all over the floor in one aisle. Now of course, I don't know how that happened, nor how long that mess was there, but I suspect a slovenly customer was looking at merchandise and couldn't have been bothered by picking up the mess they had carelessly created. But why on earth hadn't an employee noticed and remedied that mess? Another example of inattention was how the big cartons of K Cups were stacked; it looked as though their forklift or pallet jack operator had a few too many adult beverages before saying "that messy off-center precariously leaning stack is EXACTLY the way I wanted it too look". Overall, we had a typical Ollies experience, and that's a good one!

It's very…read moresimilar to the Building 19 store because it was the original Building 19 store until Ollie's took it over. Very handy but useful things you can buy that's very reasonable or cheap. Actually some prices are not the cheapest but if you look, you can find some deals. From books, to garden care, to home ware, to some foods, even big appliances like air conditioners, school supplies, sports, toys, they might just have it. Not everything but you have to look. That's why you would come. To find a deal. It's not the best looking store or tidy, but that's the vibe here. Bargains, bargains, like at a warehouse. What's fun is actually to read the signs in the store. They are funny and very original. It's in a plaza with other stores, so there's plenty of parking. If in the area, I would check it out. But I wouldn't drive all the way just for a bargain. You could go to Big Lots, Ocean State Job Lot for similar items and in a nicer looking store. But you would miss out on the signs that advertise this store. That was the only thing I enjoyed.

Before we were going to leave, we looked for the restroom. When we found it, the entire hallway leading to it was dark and had been blocked off with room dividers and a sign saying out of order. We made a joke about it because it had the look of a closed off area, not just temporarily out of order. We were exiting the store, walking past the checkout area when an associate, a middle aged woman who had the look of being some kind of shift supervisor, basically wanted to start a confrontation with us. As we were walking past, well within proximity for us to hear her, she made a comment to a young associate that seemed to be about us joking about the restroom out of order sign. We turned to clarify what she had said and she repeated that we made some joke about the restrooms being closed. We did not engage with her and left. I went back to the vestibule area to look in to see her name tag, but I couldn't see one. Then we left. I had planned to write to Ollie's corporate but found on their website a rigid format to leave positive remarks but no interest expressed in hearing other feedback. As I tried to find a way to communicate with them, I learned that they have some very unpleasant actions against them, touching on discrimination and other unpleasantness. At that point it seemed that this kind of employee may be just the expression of their management, and I decided not to try to correspond with them. Then I came to Yelp and saw the recent review and comment about the restrooms having been closed since June of 2025. I suspected when this happened that she was particularly sensitive about the restrooms being closed. It appears that Ollie's has developed a very negative culture. I would avoid them in the future.
